The U(1) phase transition on toroidal and spherical lattices
We have studied the properties of the phase transition in the U(1) compact
pure gauge model paying special atention to the influence of the topology of
the boundary conditions. From the behavior of the energy cumulants and the
observation of an effective \nu -> 1/d on toroidal and spherical lattices, we

First order signatures in 4D pure compact U(1) gauge theory with toroidal and spherical topologies
We study the pure compact U(1) gauge theory with the extended Wilson action
(\beta, \gamma couplings) by finite size scaling techniques, in lattices
ranging from L=6 to L=24 in the region of \gamma <= 0 with toroidal and
spherical topologies. The phase transition presents a double peak structure
which survives in the thermodynamical limit in the torus. In the sphere the
evidence support the idea of a weaker, but still first order, phase transition.
For negative values of gamma the transition becomes weaker and larger lattices
are needed to find its asymptotic behaviour. Along the transient region the
behaviour is the typical one of a weak first order transition for both
topologies, with a region where 1/d < nu < 0.5, which becomes nu compatible

Evolutionary constraints on the complexity of genetic regulatory networks allow predictions of the total number of genetic interactions
Genetic regulatory networks (GRNs) have been widely studied, yet there is a
lack of understanding with regards to the final size and properties of these
networks, mainly due to no network currently being complete. In this study, we
analyzed the distribution of GRN structural properties across a large set of
distinct prokaryotic organisms and found a set of constrained characteristics
such as network density and number of regulators. Our results allowed us to
estimate the number of interactions that complete networks would have, a
valuable insight that could aid in the daunting task of network curation,
prediction, and validation. Using state-of-the-art statistical approaches, we
also provided new evidence to settle a previously stated controversy that
raised the possibility of complete biological networks being random and
therefore attributing the observed scale-free properties to an artifact
emerging from the sampling process during network discovery. Furthermore, we
identified a set of properties that enabled us to assess the consistency of the
connectivity distribution for various GRNs against different alternative
statistical distributions. Our results favor the hypothesis that highly
connected nodes (hubs) are not a consequence of network incompleteness.
Finally, an interaction coverage computed for the GRNs as a proxy for
completeness revealed that high-throughput based reconstructions of GRNs could
yield biased networks with a low average clustering coefficient, showing that

Prospects and status of quark mass renormalization in three-flavour QCD
We present the current status of a revised strategy to compute the running of
renormalized quark masses in QCD with three flavours of massless O(a) improved
Wilson quarks. The strategy employed uses the standard finite-size scaling
method in the Schr\"odinger functional and accommodates for the
non-perturbative scheme-switch which becomes necessary at intermediate

Analytic Solutions to Coherent Control of the Dirac Equation
A simple framework for Dirac spinors is developed that parametrizes
admissible quantum dynamics and also analytically constructs electromagnetic
fields, obeying Maxwell's equations, which yield a desired evolution. In
particular, we show how to achieve dispersionless rotation and translation of
wave packets. Additionally, this formalism can handle control interactions
beyond electromagnetic. This work reveals unexpected flexibility of the Dirac
equation for control applications, which may open new prospects for quantum
technologies
Dirac open quantum system dynamics: formulations and simulations
We present an open system interaction formalism for the Dirac equation.
Overcoming a complexity bottleneck of alternative formulations, our framework
enables efficient numerical simulations (utilizing a typical desktop) of
relativistic dynamics within the von Neumann density matrix and Wigner phase
space descriptions. Employing these instruments, we gain important insights
into the effect of quantum dephasing for relativistic systems in many branches
of physics. In particular, the conditions for robustness of Majorana spinors
against dephasing are established. Using the Klein paradox and tunneling as
examples, we show that quantum dephasing does not suppress negative energy
particle generation. Hence, the Klein dynamics is also robust to dephasing
Accidental Father-to-Son HIV-1 Transmission During the Seroconversion Period
A 4-year-old child born to an HIV-1 seronegative mother was diagnosed with HIV-1, the main risk factor being transmission from the child's father who was seroconverting at the time of the child's birth. In the context of a forensic investigation, we aimed to identify the source of infection of the child and date of the transmission event. Samples were collected from the father and child at two time points about 4 years after the child's birth. Partial segments of three HIV-1 genes (gag, pol, and env) were sequenced and maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian methods were used to determine direction and estimate date of transmission. Neutralizing antibodies were determined using a single cycle assay. Bayesian trees displayed a paraphyletic-monophyletic topology in all three genomic regions, with the father's host label at the root, which is consistent with father-to-son transmission. ML trees found similar topologies in gag and pol and a monophyletic-monophyletic topology in env. Analysis of the time of the most recent common ancestor of each HIV-1 gene population indicated that the child was infected shortly after the father. Consistent with the infection history, both father and son developed broad and potent HIV-specific neutralizing antibody responses. In conclusion, the direction of transmission implicated the father as the source of transmission. Transmission occurred during the seroconversion period when the father was unaware of the infection and was likely accidental. This case shows how genetic, phylogenetic, and serological data can contribute for the forensic investigation of HIV transmission.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
