    Consumer Preferences for Cluster Raisins: A Focus Group Investigation

    The U.S. raisin industry has experienced a decline in acreage and in number of growers in recent years. One firm is trying a novel approach to marketing raisins, namely, by marketing them still attached to the vine. This product is called cluster raisins. In order to explore consumer preferences related to cluster raisins, and to generate new product ideas and preferred marketing methods, two focus group interviews were implemented. Findings included that a young (i.e., 18 - 25 years) market segment would be a recommended target market. Also included are recommendations regarding price, packaging, and methods of increasing consumer awareness.     Improving the forward kinematics of cable-driven parallel robots through cable angle sensors

    This paper presents a sensor fusion method that aims at improving the accuracy of cable-driven planar parallel mechanisms (CDPMs) and simplifying the kinematic resolution. While the end-effector pose of the CDPM is usually obtained with the cable lengths, the proposed method combines the cable length measurement with the cable angle by using a data fusion algorithm. This allows for a resolution based on the loop closure equations and a weighted least squares method. The paper first presents the resolution of the forward kinematics for planar parallel mechanisms using cable angle only. Then, the proposed sensor fusion scheme is detailed. Finally, an experiment comparing the different procedures for obtaining the pose of the CDPM is carried out, in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed fusion method

    Pattern recognition based on HD-sEMG spatial features extraction for an efficient proportional control of a robotic arm.

    To enable an efficient alternative control of an assistive robotic arm using electromyographic (EMG) signals, the control method must simultaneously provide both the direction and the velocity. However, the contraction variations of the forearm muscles, used to proportionally control the device’s velocity using a regression method, can disturb the accuracy of the classification used to estimate its direction at the same time. In this paper, the original set of spatial features takes advantage of the 2D structure of an 8 × 8 high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG) sensor to perform a high accuracy classification while improving the robustness to the contraction variations. Based on the HD-sEMG sensor, different muscular activity images are extracted by applying different spatial filters. In order to characterize their distribution specific to each movement, instead of the EMG signals’ amplitudes, these muscular images are divided in sub-images upon which the proposed spatial features, such as the centers of the gravity coordinates and the percentages of influence, are computed. These features permits to achieve average accuracies of 97% and 96.7% to detect respectively 16 forearm movements performed by a healthy subject with prior experience with the control approach and 10 movements by ten inexperienced healthy subjects. Compared with the time-domain features, the proposed method exhibits significant higher accuracies in presence of muscular contraction variations, requires less training data and is more robust against the time of use.     Metastatic myocardial abscess on the posterior wall of the left ventricle: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Myocardial abscess is a rare and potentially fatal condition. Metastatic myocardial abscess in the setting of infective endocarditis has been infrequently reported in the medical literature. To the best of the authors' knowledge no case of myocardial abscess affecting the free wall of the left ventricle secondary to infective endocarditis of a right-sided heart valve has been reported previously.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of tricuspid valve endocarditis caused by <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>and resulting in a myocardial abscess on the posterior wall of the left ventricle, far from the active valvular infection. We also briefly discuss the role of different investigation modalities including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosing myocardial abscess.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Myocardial abscess is a life-threatening illness. A high index of clinical suspicion is required to make a prompt diagnosis. Final diagnosis may need multi-modality imaging. An early diagnosis, aggressive medical therapy, multidisciplinary care and timely surgical intervention may save life in this otherwise fatal condition.</p

    Monoubiquitination of syntaxin 3 leads to retrieval from the basolateral plasma membrane and facilitates cargo recruitment to exosomes

    Syntaxin 3 (Stx3), a SNARE protein located and functioning at the apical plasma membrane of epithelial cells, is required for epithelial polarity. A fraction of Stx3 is localized to late endosomes/lysosomes, although how it traffics there and its function in these organelles is unknown. Here we report that Stx3 undergoes monoubiquitination in a conserved polybasic domain. Stx3 present at the basolateral—but not the apical—plasma membrane is rapidly endocytosed, targeted to endosomes, internalized into intraluminal vesicles (ILVs), and excreted in exosomes. A nonubiquitinatable mutant of Stx3 (Stx3-5R) fails to enter this pathway and leads to the inability of the apical exosomal cargo protein GPRC5B to enter the ILV/exosomal pathway. This suggests that ubiquitination of Stx3 leads to removal from the basolateral membrane to achieve apical polarity, that Stx3 plays a role in the recruitment of cargo to exosomes, and that the Stx3-5R mutant acts as a dominant-negative inhibitor. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) acquires its membrane in an intracellular compartment and we show that Stx3-5R strongly reduces the number of excreted infectious viral particles. Altogether these results suggest that Stx3 functions in the transport of specific proteins to apical exosomes and that HCMV exploits this pathway for virion excretion

    Aortic distensibility and coronary artery bypass graft patency

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aortic distensibility is an elasticity index of the aorta, and reflects aortic stiffness. Coronary artery disease has been found to be substantially associated with increased aortic stiffness. In this study we aimed to retrospectively analyze the association of angiographically determined aortic distensibility with the patency rates of coronary bypass grafts</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was conducted in the Cardiology department of the Applied Research Centre for Health of Uludağ University. The coronary angiograms of 53 consecutive coronary bypass patients were analysed retrospectively. Aortic distensibility was calculated using the formula: 2 × (change in aortic diameter)/(diastolic aortic diameter) × (change in aortic pressure). The number of stenosed and patent bypass grafts and the patient characteristics like age, risk factors were noted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 44 male (83%) and 9 female (17%) cases. Eighteen cases had only one saphenous vein grafting. The number of cases with two, three and four saphenous grafting were 18, 11 and 1; respectively. In the control angiograms the number of cases with one, two, three and four saphenous vein graft obstruction were 15 (31.3%), 7 (14.6%), 1 (2.1%) and 1 (2.1%) respectively. The aortic distensibility did not differ in cases with and without saphenous graft occlusion (p > 0.05). Also left internal mammary artery (LIMA) graft patency was not related to the distensibility of the aorta (p > 0.05). We also evaluated the data for cut-off values of 50 and 70 mmHg of pulse pressure and did not see any significant difference between the groups in terms of saphenous or LIMA grafts.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this study we failed to show association of angiographically determined aortic distensibility with coronary bypass graft patency in consecutive 53 patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).</p

    PIGH deficiency can be associated with severe neurodevelopmental and skeletal manifestations

    Phosphatidylinositol Glycan Anchor Biosynthesis class H (PIGH) is an essential player in the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) synthesis, an anchor for numerous cell membrane‐bound proteins. PIGH deficiency is a newly described and rare disorder associated with developmental delay, seizures and behavioral difficulties. Herein, we report three new unrelated families with two different bi‐allelic PIGH variants, including one new variant p.(Arg163Trp) which seems associated with a more severe phenotype. The common clinical features in all affected individuals are developmental delay/intellectual disability and hypotonia. Variable clinical features include seizures, autism spectrum disorder, apraxia, severe language delay, dysarthria, feeding difficulties, facial dysmorphisms, microcephaly, strabismus, and musculoskeletal anomalies. The two siblings homozygous for the p.(Arg163Trp) variant have severe symptoms including profound psychomotor retardation, intractable seizures, multiple bone fractures, scoliosis, loss of independent ambulation, and delayed myelination on brain MRI. Serum iron levels were significantly elevated in one individual. All tested individuals with PIGH deficiency had normal alkaline phosphatase and CD16, a GPI‐anchored protein (GPI‐AP), was found to be decreased by 60% on granulocytes from one individual. This study expands the PIGH deficiency phenotype range toward the severe end of the spectrum with the identification of a novel pathogenic variant
