From Manaus to Maputo: Toward a Public Health and Biodiversity Framework
The linkages between human health, biodiversity, ecosystems, and the life-supporting services that they provide are varied and complex. The traditional neglect of this nexus by policy-makers perpetuates threats posed to ecosystems with potentially critical impacts on global health. The Convention on Biological Diversity and the World Health Organization recently co-convened two regional workshops on these intricate but vital linkages. From discussions held with policy-makers and experts in the biodiversity and health sectors, spanning some 50 countries in Africa and the Americas, we derive a broad framework for the development of national and regional public health and biodiversity strategies relevant to strategic planning processes in the emerging post-2015 development context
Identification of Boundary Conditions Using Natural Frequencies
The present investigation concerns a disc of varying thickness of whose
flexural stiffness varies with the radius according to the law , where and are constants. The problem of finding boundary
conditions for fastening this disc, which are inaccessible to direct
observation, from the natural frequencies of its axisymmetric flexural
oscillations is considered. The problem in question belongs to the class of
inverse problems and is a completely natural problem of identification of
boundary conditions. The search for the unknown conditions for fastening the
disc is equivalent to finding the span of the vectors of unknown conditions
coefficients. It is shown that this inverse problem is well posed. Two theorems
on the uniqueness and a theorem on stability of the solution of this problem
are proved, and a method for establishing the unknown conditions for fastening
the disc to the walls is indicated. An approximate formula for determining the
unknown conditions is obtained using first three natural frequencies. The
method of approximate calculation of unknown boundary conditions is explained
with the help of three examples of different cases for the fastening the disc
(rigid clamping, free support, elastic fixing).

The school policy, social, and physical environment and change in adolescent physical activity: An exploratory analysis using the LASSO.
PURPOSE: We examined the association between the school policy, social and physical environment and change in adolescent physical activity (PA) and explored how sex and socioeconomic status modified potential associations. METHODS: Data from the GoActive study were used for these analyses. Participants were adolescents (n = 1765, mean age±SD 13.2±0.4y) from the East of England, UK. Change in longitudinal accelerometer assessed moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was the outcome. School policy, social and physical environment features (n = 267) were exposures. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator variable selection method (LASSO) was used to determine exposures most relevant to the outcome. Exposures selected by the LASSO were added to a multiple linear regression model with estimates of change in min/day of MVPA per 1-unit change in each exposure reported. Post-hoc analyses, exploring associations between change in variables selected by the LASSO and change in MVPA, were undertaken to further explain findings. FINDINGS: No school policy or physical environment features were selected by the LASSO as predictors of change in MVPA. The LASSO selected two school social environment variables (participants asking a friend to do physical activity; friend asking a participant to do physical activity) as potential predictors of change in MVPA but no significant associations were found in subsequent linear regression models for all participants (β [95%CI] -1.01 [-2.73;0.71] and 0.65 [-2.17;0.87] min/day respectively). In the post-hoc analyses, for every unit increase in change in participants asking a friend to do PA and change in a friend asking participants to do PA, an increase in MVPA of 2.78 (1.55;4.02) and 1.80 (0.48;3.11) min/day was predicted respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The school social environment is associated with PA during adolescence. Further exploration of how friendships during adolescence may be leveraged to support effective PA promotion in schools is warranted
Pattern-Sensitive Epilepsy. I: A Demonstration of a Spatial Frequency Selective Epileptic Response to Gratings
Rare individuals suffer epileptic seizures when they view certain images, particularly stripes. Contrast-threshold functions (the ability to see faint stripes of various widths) were determined for two pattern-sensitive brothers, and the epileptogenicity of various patterns was assessed for one of them. Sine wave grating contrast-detection thresholds for the two subjects were essentially normal, with lowest thresholds at approximately 2 cycles/ degree (c/deg). Epileptiform discharges occurred maximally at 5 c/deg with a 1-octave 50% bandwidth. Pattern epileptogenicity was increased by the addition of a third harmonic sine wave grating to its fundamental, but was unaffected by the phase relation of the two gratings. The frequency selectivity of epileptic responsiveness was quantitatively similar to a “spatial frequency channel.” Inhibitory interactions were not present. The findings suggest relations between the phenomena of pattern-sensitive epilepsy and hypothesized spatial frequency channels which merit further exploration. Se determinaron los umbrales para contrastes (la capacidad de ver rayas de diversas anchuras y muy tenues) en dos hermanos sensibles a patrones y se estableciÓ la epileptogeneidad de di versos patrones en uno de ellos. Los umbrales para contrastes fueron esencialmente normales en los dos sujetos cuando se utilizeÓ una rejilla hecha con ondas sinusoidales, siendo el umbral inferior unos 2 ciclos/ grado (c/deg). Descargas epileptiformes tuvieron lugar de modo mÁximo a 5 c/deg con una amplitud de banda del 50% de una octava. la capacidad epileptogÉnica del partÓn aumentÓ cuando se aÑadiÓ una tercera sinusoide armÓnica a la rejilla base pero esa capacidad no se viÓ alterada por la relaciÓn de fase entre las dos rejillas. La selectividad de la frecuencia de la respuesta epileptogÉnica fue cuantitativamente similar al “canal de frecuencia espacial”. No se observaron interacciones inhibitorias. Phosphorescent Energy Downshifting for Diminishing Surface Recombination in Silicon Nanowire Solar Cells
Molecularly engineered Ir(III) complexes can transfer energy from short-wavelength photons (lambda < 450 nm) to photons of longer wavelength (lambda > 500 nm), which can enhance the otherwise low internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of crystalline Si (c-Si) nanowire solar cells (NWSCs) in the shortwavelength region. Herein, we demonstrate a phosphorescent energy downshifting system using Ir(III) complexes at short wavelengths (300-450 nm) to diminish the severe surface recombination that occurs in c-Si NWSCs. The developed Ir(III) complexes can be considered promising energy converters because they exhibit superior intrinsic properties such as a high quantum yield, a large Stokes shift, a long exciton diffusion length in crystalline film, and a reproducible synthetic procedure. Using the developed 1011) complexes, highly crystalline energy downshifting layers were fabricated by ultrasonic spray deposition to enhance the photoluminescence efficiency by increasing the radiative decay. With the optimized energy downshifting layer, our 1cm(2) c-Si NWSCs with Ir(III) complexes exhibited a higher IQE value for short-wavelength light (300-450 nm) compared with that of bare Si NWSCs without Ir(III) complexes, resulting in a notable increase in the short-circuit current density (from 34.4 mA.cm(-2) to 36.5 mA.cm(-2) )
Identification of Class I HLA T Cell Control Epitopes for West Nile Virus
The recent West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak in the United States underscores the importance of understanding human immune responses to this pathogen. Via the presentation of viral peptide ligands at the cell surface, class I HLA mediate the T cell recognition and killing of WNV infected cells. At this time, there are two key unknowns in regards to understanding protective T cell immunity: 1) the number of viral ligands presented by the HLA of infected cells, and 2) the distribution of T cell responses to these available HLA/viral complexes. Here, comparative mass spectroscopy was applied to determine the number of WNV peptides presented by the HLA-A*11:01 of infected cells after which T cell responses to these HLA/WNV complexes were assessed. Six viral peptides derived from capsid, NS3, NS4b, and NS5 were presented. When T cells from infected individuals were tested for reactivity to these six viral ligands, polyfunctional T cells were focused on the GTL9 WNV capsid peptide, ligands from NS3, NS4b, and NS5 were less immunogenic, and two ligands were largely inert, demonstrating that class I HLA reduce the WNV polyprotein to a handful of immune targets and that polyfunctional T cells recognize infections by zeroing in on particular HLA/WNV epitopes. Such dominant HLA/peptide epitopes are poised to drive the development of WNV vaccines that elicit protective T cells as well as providing key antigens for immunoassays that establish correlates of viral immunity. © 2013 Kaabinejadian et al
Seeking a practical definition of stable glaucoma: a Delphi consensus survey of UK glaucoma consultants

Background: To generate a practical and clinically useful consensus definition of ‘stable glaucoma’ to aid provision of glaucoma services in the UK and to provide guidance for the criteria that should be used for monitoring of glaucoma patients in primary care services. Methods: A Delphi exercise was undertaken to derive consensus through an online questionnaire. Participants were asked to score their strength of agreement for a series of clinical parameters. Results and comments from each round were used to inform subsequent rounds. A total of 3 rounds were undertaken. Results: Thirty-two glaucoma experts participated in the study with over 90% completion rate achieved over three rounds. The consensus was reached for the following parameters: IOP levels to be used for defining stability, visual field-testing techniques to define stability, the number of medication changes acceptable to define stability and the number of treatment medications allowed to define stability. No consensus was reached on the period of time over which stability was defined, however, there was considerable agreement that longer durations of follow up (36–48 months) were required. A combination of optic disc photos and ocular coherence topography (OCT) retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) assessment/ OCT disc structural evaluation are the preferred imaging methods for the assessment of structural stability. Oversight by a glaucoma consultant was considered important for glaucoma monitoring schemes. Conclusion: The consensus definition of glaucoma stability generated through this Delphi exercise provides guidance for allocation of patients suitable for monitoring in primary care glaucoma monitoring schemes
Mutation of the diamond-blackfan anemia gene Rps7 in mouse results in morphological and neuroanatomical phenotypes.
The ribosome is an evolutionarily conserved organelle essential for cellular function. Ribosome construction requires assembly of approximately 80 different ribosomal proteins (RPs) and four different species of rRNA. As RPs co-assemble into one multi-subunit complex, mutation of the genes that encode RPs might be expected to give rise to phenocopies, in which the same phenotype is associated with loss-of-function of each individual gene. However, a more complex picture is emerging in which, in addition to a group of shared phenotypes, diverse RP gene-specific phenotypes are observed. Here we report the first two mouse mutations (Rps7(Mtu) and Rps7(Zma)) of ribosomal protein S7 (Rps7), a gene that has been implicated in Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Rps7 disruption results in decreased body size, abnormal skeletal morphology, mid-ventral white spotting, and eye malformations. These phenotypes are reported in other murine RP mutants and, as demonstrated for some other RP mutations, are ameliorated by Trp53 deficiency. Interestingly, Rps7 mutants have additional overt malformations of the developing central nervous system and deficits in working memory, phenotypes that are not reported in murine or human RP gene mutants. Conversely, Rps7 mouse mutants show no anemia or hyperpigmentation, phenotypes associated with mutation of human RPS7 and other murine RPs, respectively. We provide two novel RP mouse models and expand the repertoire of potential phenotypes that should be examined in RP mutants to further explore the concept of RP gene-specific phenotypes
