Breaking of the adjoint string in 2+1 dimensions
The roughly linear rise of the potential found between adjoint sources in
SU(N) in lattice simulations is expected to saturate into a state of two
`gluelumps' due to gluonic screening. We examine this in SU(2) in 2+1
dimensions. Crossover between string-like and broken states is clearly seen by
the mixing-matrix technique, using different operators to probe the two states;
the breaking behaviour is rather abrupt. Furthermore, we are able to show that
both types of operator have a finite overlap with both states; in the case of
the Wilson loops the overlap with the broken string is, as predicted, very

Rigorous results on superconducting ground states for attractive extended Hubbard models
We show that the exact ground state for a class of extended Hubbard models
including bond-charge, exchange, and pair-hopping terms, is the Yang
"eta-paired" state for any non-vanishing value of the pair-hopping amplitude,
at least when the on-site Coulomb interaction is attractive enough and the
remaining physical parameters satisfy a single constraint. The ground state is
thus rigorously superconducting. Our result holds on a bipartite lattice in any
dimension, at any band filling, and for arbitrary electron hopping.Comment: 12 page
Path Integral Description of a Semiclassical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model
The electron motion along a chain is described by a continuum version of the
Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian in which phonon fields and electronic
coordinates are mapped onto the time scale. The path integral formalism allows
us to derive the non local source action for the particle interacting with the
oscillators bath. The method can be applied for any value of the {\it e-ph}
coupling. The path integral dependence on the model parameters has been
analysed by computing the partition function and some thermodynamical
properties from up to room temperature. A peculiar upturn in the low
temperature {\it heat capacity over temperature} ratio (pointing to a glassy
like behavior) has been ascribed to the time dependent electronic hopping along
the chain
Metallic ferromagnetism without exchange splitting
In the band theory of ferromagnetism there is a relative shift in the
position of majority and minority spin bands due to the self-consistent field
due to opposite spin electrons. In the simplest realization, the Stoner model,
the majority and minority spin bands are rigidly shifted with respect to each
other. Here we consider models at the opposite extreme, where there is no
overall shift of the energy bands. Instead, upon spin polarization one of the
bands broadens relative to the other. Ferromagnetism is driven by the resulting
gain in kinetic energy. A signature of this class of mechanisms is that a
transfer of spectral weight in optical absorption from high to low frequencies
occurs upon spin polarization. We show that such models arise from generalized
tight binding models that include off-diagonal matrix elements of the Coulomb
interaction. For certain parameter ranges it is also found that reentrant
ferromagnetism occurs. We examine properties of these models at zero and finite
temperatures, and discuss their possible relevance to real materials
Parity Violation in Proton-Proton Scattering
Measurements of parity-violating longitudinal analyzing powers (normalized
asymmetries) in polarized proton-proton scattering provide a unique window on
the interplay between the weak and strong interactions between and within
hadrons. Several new proton-proton parity violation experiments are presently
either being performed or are being prepared for execution in the near future:
at TRIUMF at 221 MeV and 450 MeV and at COSY (Kernforschungsanlage Juelich) at
230 MeV and near 1.3 GeV. These experiments are intended to provide stringent
constraints on the set of six effective weak meson-nucleon coupling constants,
which characterize the weak interaction between hadrons in the energy domain
where meson exchange models provide an appropriate description. The 221 MeV is
unique in that it selects a single transition amplitude (3P2-1D2) and
consequently constrains the weak meson-nucleon coupling constant h_rho{pp}. The
TRIUMF 221 MeV proton-proton parity violation experiment is described in some
detail. A preliminary result for the longitudinal analyzing power is Az = (1.1
+/-0.4 +/-0.4) x 10^-7. Further proton-proton parity violation experiments are
commented on. The anomaly at 6 GeV/c requires that a new multi-GeV

Design and conduct of 'Xtreme Alps' : a double-blind, randomised controlled study of the effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on acclimatisation to high altitude
The study of healthy human volunteers ascending to high altitude provides a robust model of the complex physiological interplay that emulates human adaptation to hypoxaemia in clinical conditions. Nitric oxide (NO) metabolism may play an important role in both adaptation to high altitude and response to hypoxaemia during critical illness at sea level. Circulating nitrate and nitrite concentrations can be augmented by dietary supplementation and this is associated with improved exercise performance and mitochondrial efficiency. We hypothesised that the administration of a dietary substance (beetroot juice) rich in nitrate would improve oxygen efficiency during exercise at high altitude by enhancing tissue microcirculatory blood flow and oxygenation. Furthermore, nitrate supplementation would lead to measurable increases in NO bioactivity throughout the body.
This methodological manuscript describes the design and conduct of the ‘Xtreme Alps’ expedition, a double-blind randomised controlled trial investigating the effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on acclimatisation to hypobaric hypoxia at high altitude in healthy human volunteers. The primary outcome measure was the change in oxygen efficiency during exercise at high altitude between participants allocated to receive nitrate supplementation and those receiving a placebo. A number of secondary measures were recorded, including exercise capacity, peripheral and microcirculatory blood flow and tissue oxygenation.
Results from this study will further elucidate the role of NO in adaption to hypoxaemia and guide clinical trials in critically ill patients. Improved understanding of hypoxaemia in critical illness may provide new therapeutic avenues for interventions that will improve survival in critically ill patients
Methyl bromide and sulfuryl fluoride effectiveness against red flour beetle life stages
The efficacy of methyl bromide (MB) and sulfuryl fluoride (SF) for managing all life stages of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, was investigated in the Hal Ross Flour Mill at Kansas State University. Eggs, young larvae, large larvae, pupae, and adults, confined in plastic compartments with dusting of flour and 2-cm deep flour, were exposed at 25 mill locations to two MB and two SF fumigations; in May and August 2009. MB and SF treatments were conducted by commercial fumigators, and each fumigation lasted 24 h. Gas monitoring lines were placed near the bioassay boxes to measure gas concentrations over time during fumigations. Both MB treatments killed 100% of all stages in the boxes except for large larvae in a few locations. In these locations, the mortality of large larvae ranged from 96-98%. SF treatments killed 100% of all stages except eggs. In the May treatment with SF, egg mortality ranged from 44-100% with only two boxes showing 100% mortality, because of under-dosing. Under-dosing occurred because the mill temperature was assumed to be greater than 27\ubaC when it was actually below 27\ubaC. In the second SF trial, only three boxes had egg mortalities that were less than 100%. However, data from the two replications showed that the mean mortalities of eggs and large larvae between MB and SF were not significantly different from each other
Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Associated WH and ZH Production at Hadron Colliders
Higgs-boson production in association with W or Z bosons, p pbar -> WH/ZH +
X, is the most promising discovery channel for a light Standard Model Higgs
particle at the Fermilab Tevatron. We present the calculation of the
electroweak O(alpha) corrections to these processes. The corrections decrease
the theoretical prediction by up to 5-10%, depending in detail on the
Higgs-boson mass and the input-parameter scheme. We update the cross-section
prediction for associated WH and ZH production at the Tevatron and at the LHC,
including the next-to-leading order electroweak and QCD corrections, and study
the theoretical uncertainties induced by factorization and renormalization

Elasticity-driven interaction between vortices in type-II superconductors
The contribution to the vortex lattice energy which is due to the
vortex-induced strains is calculated covering all the magnetic field range
which defines the vortex state. This contribution is compared with previously
reported ones what shows that, in the most part of the vortex state, it has
been notably underestimated until now. The reason of such underestimation is
the assumption that only the vortex cores induce strains. In contrast to what
is generally assumed, both core and non-core regions are important sources of

A Monitor of Beam Polarization Profiles for the TRIUMF Parity Experiment
TRIUMF experiment E497 is a study of parity violation in pp scattering at an
energy where the leading term in the analyzing power is expected to vanish,
thus measuring a unique combination of weak-interaction flavour conserving
terms. It is desired to reach a level of sensitivity of 2x10^-8 in both
statistical and systematic errors. The leading systematic errors depend on
transverse polarization components and, at least, the first moment of
transverse polarization. A novel polarimeter that measures profiles of both
