This work analyzes the role of feudo-vassalic relations in Parma and its territory between 10th and 12Th century through the study of those who are qualified in the documents as \u201cvassals\u201d and their families. Even though the highest concentration of the term \u201cvassal\u201d is found in the 10th century, the presence of a typical feudal coordination can be outlined only in the second half of the 12th century. The diffusion of a more formal feudal vocabulary also to lower social levels is due to the modification of private and patrimonial relations taking place by that period. However, the strong power of the Bishop and its tight link to the Regnum has been able to integrate rural lords and emerging urban families in one group \u2013 the militia \u2013 who led also the first communal institutions. Vassalic bonds were only one of the possible ways to determine political, social and economic relations

Evidence for membrane affinity of the C-terminal domain of bovine milk PP3 component

AbstractComponent PP3 is a phosphoglycoprotein isolated from bovine milk with unknown biological function, which displays in its C-terminal region a basic amphipathic α-helix, a feature often involved in membrane association. According to that, the behaviour of PP3 and of a synthetic peptide from the C-terminal domain (residues 113–135) was investigated in lipid environment. Conductance measurements indicated that the peptide was able to associate and form channels in planar lipid bilayers composed of neutral or charged phospholipids. Electrostatic interactions seemed to promote voltage-dependant channel formation but this was not absolutely required since the pore-forming ability of the 113–135 C-terminal peptide was also detected with the zwitterionic lipid bilayer. Additionally, a spectroscopic study using circular dichroism argues that the peptide adopts an α-helical conformation in interaction with neutral or charged micelles. Thus, the conducting aggregates in bilayers might be composed of a bundle of peptides in helical conformation. Besides, similar conductance measurements performed with the whole PP3 protein did not induce any channel fluctuations. However, with the latter, an early breakdown of the bilayers occurred, a finding that can be tentatively explained by a massive incorporation of PP3. In the light of the present results, it could be inferred that PP3 membrane attachment may be achieved by oligomerization of the C-terminal amphipathic helical region

Regionalization of ports as a strategic leverage to improve competitiveness. A study on central italy ports and related hinterland

Nowadays, the success of a maritime port does not depend anymore on its traditional intrinsic points of strength, such as the internal capacity, but also on its ability to effectively integrate the development of its hinterland into business relations and supply chains. Mediterranean ports can get competitive, if specific "regionalization" processes are launched and supported. Key point for this strategy is the hinterland involvement: logistics and transports integration, railways, realization and development of dryports, terminals, distribution centres. All these are core elements for this purpose. The overall focus has changed from port performances to performance of the entire supply chain in the port-hinterland relationship. This is what it is going to do the Port of Civitavecchia, the most important port in Lazio Region, would like to become the central point into commercial, industrial and infrastructural development of central Italy. The development of railway terminal and of regional road network for the developing of intermodal logistics chain, of the industrial port activities (shipbuilding sector and oil bunkering), of trade relations with Fiumicino Airport and with the roman agroindustrial sector, of logistics relations with the dryport of Orte and with the intermodal terminal (road-railway) of Pomezia Santa Palomba, are some of the activities planned and undertaken by the port for improving the regionalization of Civitavecchia. Aim of this paper is to show and underline how these regionalization processes can increase the development, and so benefit the entire regional hinterland and the competitiveness and attraction of the entire port system. A model to estimate the regionalization effect has been designed by the authors and implemented to make a comparison analysis between Civitavecchia and competing ports. © 2021 Georg Thieme Verlag. Stable interpolation with exponential-polynomial splines and node selection via greedy algorithms

    Get PDF
In this work we extend some ideas about greedy algorithms, which are well-established tools for, e.g., kernel bases, and exponential-polynomial splines whose main drawback consists in possible overfitting and consequent oscillations of the approximant. To partially overcome this issue, we develop some results on theoretically optimal interpolation points. Moreover, we introduce two algorithms which perform an adaptive selection of the spline interpolation points based on the minimization either of the sample residuals (f-greedy), or of an upper bound for the approximation error based on the spline Lebesgue function (λ-greedy). Both methods allow us to obtain an adaptive selection of the sampling points, i.e., the spline nodes. While the f-greedy selection is tailored to one specific target function, the λ-greedy algorithm enables us to define target-data-independent interpolation nodes

High GADA titer increases the risk of insulin requirement in LADA patients: a 7-year follow-up (NIRAD study 7).

The aim of this study was to determine whether glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GADA) titer and other clinical parameters could define the risk of progression to insulin therapy in latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) patients during a 7-year follow-up. This study involved 220 LADA and 430 type 2 diabetes subjects followed up for 7 years from the time of GADA screening to evaluate their progression toward insulin therapy. Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the markers capable of influencing this progression. RESULTS: During the follow-up, the drop out was 4% in both groups. A total of 119 (56.1%) out of 212 LADA patients required insulin during the 7 years of follow-up. The Kaplan-Meier plots showed that 74/104 (71.1%) of high GADA titer required insulin compared with 45/108 (41.6%) of low GADA titer and with 86/412 (20.9%) of type 2 diabetes (P<0.0001 for both). A BMI of ???25???kg/m2 and IA-2IC and zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8) positivity were also shown as the markers of faster progression (P<0.0001 for both). The proportion of LADA patients requiring insulin was significantly higher in the group of subjects treated also with sulfonylurea in the first year from diagnosis compared with those treated with diet and/or insulin sensitizers (P<0.001). The multivariate analysis confirmed that the presence of high GADA titer was a significant predictor of insulin requirement (P<0.0001, OR=6.95). CONCLUSIONS: High GADA titer, BMI ??? 25, ZnT8 and IA-2IC positivity and sulfonylurea treatment, in the first year from diagnosis, significantly increase the progression toward insulin requirement in LADA patients

An Approach to Model Resources Rationalisation in Hybrid Clouds through Users Activity Characterisation

    Get PDF
In recent years, some strategies (e.g., server consolidation by means of virtualisation techniques) helped the managers of large Information Technology (IT) infrastructures to limit, when possible, the use of hardware resources in order to provide reliable services and to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of such infrastructures. Moreover, with the advent of Cloud computing, a resource usage rationalisation can be pursued also for the users applications, if this is compatible with the Quality of Service (QoS) which must be guaranteed. In this perspective, modern datacenters are “elastic”, i.e., able to shrink or enlarge the number of local physical or virtual resources from private/public Clouds. Moreover, many of large computing environments are integrated in distributed computing environment as the grid and cloud infrastructures. In this document, we report some advances in the realisation of a utility, we named Adaptive Scheduling Controller (ASC) which, interacting with the datacenter resource manager, allows an effective and efficient usage of resources, also by means of users jobs classification. Here, we focus both on some data mining algorithms which allows to classify the users activity and on the mathematical formalisation of the functional used by ASC to find the most suitable configuration for the datacenter’s resource manager. The presented case study concerns the SCoPE infrastructure, which has a twofold role: local computing resources provider for the University of Naples Federico II and remote resources provider for both the Italian Grid Infrastructure (IGI) and the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) Federated Cloud

The video endoscopy inguinal lymphadenectomy for vulvar cancer: A pilot study

    Get PDF
Objective This prospective pilot study aims to validate feasibility, efficacy and safeness of the innovative technique of video endoscopy inguinal lymphadenectomy (VEIL) and compare it to open inguinal lymphadenectomy (OIL) in the staging and treatment of vulvar cancer (VC). Material and methods All patients affected by VC suitable for bilateral inguinal-femoral lymphadenectomy were prospectively enrolled and submitted to VEIL on one side and OIL contralaterally, sparing the saphenous vein. The surgical and post-surgical data were collected. Univariate analysis included chi square analysis or Fisher's exact test, when appropriate for categorical variables, and the Student t test and Mann–Whitney test when appropriate for continuous variables. Results Between October 2014 and June 2015 fifteen patients were valuable for the study. Although nodal retrieval was comparable for both procedures, operative time was higher after VEIL. No intraoperative complications were observed in both techniques. Postoperative complications were observed in 3 and 2 cases for OIL and VEIL respectively. One patient needed reoperation after OIL for wound necrosis and infection. According to Campisi's stage, lymphedema resulted significantly to be lower after VEIL (p = 0.024). Conclusions Waiting for larger series and longer follow-up data, the VEIL seems to be feasible allowing a radical removal of inguinal lymph nodes as well as OIL with lower morbidity
