    Shock volume: Patient-specific cumulative hypoperfusion predicts organ dysfunction in a prospective cohort of multiply injured patients

    BACKGROUND: Multiply injured patients are at risk of developing hemorrhagic shock and organ dysfunction. We determined how cumulative hypoperfusion predicted organ dysfunction by integrating serial Shock Index measurements. METHODS: In this study, we calculated shock volume (SHVL) which is a patient-specific index that quantifies cumulative hypoperfusion by integrating abnormally elevated Shock Index (heart rate/systolic blood pressure ≥ 0.9) values acutely after injury. Shock volume was calculated at three hours (3 hr), six hours (6 hr), and twenty-four hours (24 hr) after injury. Organ dysfunction was quantified using Marshall Organ Dysfunction Scores averaged from days 2 through 5 after injury (aMODSD2–D5). Logistic regression was used to determine correspondence of 3hrSHVL, 6hrSHVL, and 24hrSHVL to organ dysfunction. We compared correspondence of SHVL to organ dysfunction with traditional indices of shock including the initial base deficit (BD) and the lowest pH measurement made in the first 24 hr after injury (minimum pH). RESULTS: SHVL at all three time intervals demonstrated higher correspondence to organ dysfunction (R2 = 0.48 to 0.52) compared to initial BD (R2 = 0.32) and minimum pH (R2 = 0.32). Additionally, we compared predictive capabilities of SHVL, initial BD and minimum pH to identify patients at risk of developing high-magnitude organ dysfunction by constructing receiver operator characteristic curves. SHVL at six hours and 24 hours had higher area under the curve compared to initial BD and minimum pH. CONCLUSION: SHVL is a non-invasive metric that can predict anticipated organ dysfunction and identify patients at risk for high-magnitude organ dysfunction after injury.     The utilization of computational methods to predict reactivity is an increasingly useful tool for chemists to save time and materials by screening compounds for desirable reactivity prior to testing in the laboratory. In the field of electron transfer reactions, screening can be performed through the application of Marcus Hush theory to calculate the activation free energy of any potential reaction. This work describes the most accurate and efficient approach for modelling the electron transfer process. In particular, the importance of using an electron transfer complex to model these reactions rather than considering donor and acceptor molecules as separate entities is highlighted. The use of the complex model is found to produce more accurate calculation of the electron transfer energy when the donor and acceptor spin densities are adequately localised

    Using Integral Projection Models to Explore Management Strategies for Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)

    Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are planktivorous fish that were originally introduced to the United States for use in fish production ponds and have since escaped these enclosures and are invading the Mississippi River Basin. The silver carp invasion of the Illinois River has a myriad of negative effects on native ecosystems. In this paper, we introduce key dependencies that are likely important in the population dynamics of silver carp: length-dependent egg production and density-dependent growth. Using movement data between two adjacent pools of the Illinois River, we conduct numerical simulations to explore the theoretical effect of harvesting and the use of movement barriers. Results of our model provide insights on how the number of silver carp may respond to movement barriers placed between adjacent harvesting sites

    Vertex-primitive groups and graphs of order twice the product of two distinct odd primes

    A non-Cayley number is an integer n for which there exists a vertex-transitive graph on n vertices which is not a Cayley graph. In this paper, we complete the determination of the non-Cayley numbers of the form 2pq, where p, q are distinct odd primes. Earlier work of Miller and the second author had dealt with all such numbers corresponding to vertex-transitive graphs admitting an imprimitive subgroup of automorphisms. This paper deals with the primitive case. First the primitive permutation groups of degree 2pq are classified. This depends on the finite simple group classification. Then each of these groups G is examined to determine whether there are any non-Cayley graphs which admit G as a vertex-primitive subgroup of automorphisms, and admit no imprimitive subgroups.
