Semantic Web is extension of the existing World Wide Web, providing tools and technologies to support the transparent exchange of information and knowledge among organizations. Nowadays, multiple areas can be approached by ontologies, part of the W3C standards stack, and the semantic web world, as the subject of this project, mechanics. Mechanics have been accentuated in a visible way, where the reality of living without means of transportation is not feasible in people’s lives. The development of new methods to increase the knowledge of drivers and everyday people about automated vehicles is essential. Regarding cars, revisions, maintenance, inspections, among others, are necessary and ”mandatory” subjects and due to this, it is possible to prevent future damage by prolonging the life of the car. In certain cases, this doesn’t happen, either due to wear of parts or unforeseen events, and despite being a busy market, drivers are not always informed about the best cares to take or the problems that may arise. As such, the theme of this project is to make a relationship between mechanical details, issues, and solutions. For that purpose, the defined ontology was exposed via a mobile application, with it providing to the user, several details that he can or not relate, and trough them, provide a connection with a certain problem and solution. The semantic web ontology was developed in Protégé, exposed into Apache Jena Fuseki server, and was running in an Azure Virtual Machine, allowing it to be available into the OutSystems application.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Modelling academic dropout in computer engineering using arti cial neural networks

    Get PDF
School dropout in higher education is an academic, economic, political and social problem, which has a great impact and is difficult to resolve. In order to mitigate this problem, this paper proposes a predictive model of classification, based on artificial neural networks, which allows the prediction, at the end of the first school year, of the propensity that the computer engineering students of a polytechnic institute in the interior of the country have for dropout. A differentiating aspect of this study is that it considers the classifications obtained in the course units of the first academic year as potential predictors of dropout. A new approach in the process of selecting the factors that foreshadow the dropout allowed isolating 12 explanatory variables, which guaranteed a good predictive capacity of the model (AUC = 78.5%). These variables reveal fundamental aspects for the adoption of management strategies that may be more assertive in the combat to academic dropout.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Canagliflozin and renal outcomes in type 2 diabetes and nephropathy

BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of kidney failure worldwide, but few effective long-term treatments are available. In cardiovascular trials of inhibitors of sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), exploratory results have suggested that such drugs may improve renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS In this double-blind, randomized trial, we assigned patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuric chronic kidney disease to receive canagliflozin, an oral SGLT2 inhibitor, at a dose of 100 mg daily or placebo. All the patients had an estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 30 to <90 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area and albuminuria (ratio of albumin [mg] to creatinine [g], >300 to 5000) and were treated with renin–angiotensin system blockade. The primary outcome was a composite of end-stage kidney disease (dialysis, transplantation, or a sustained estimated GFR of <15 ml per minute per 1.73 m2), a doubling of the serum creatinine level, or death from renal or cardiovascular causes. Prespecified secondary outcomes were tested hierarchically. RESULTS The trial was stopped early after a planned interim analysis on the recommendation of the data and safety monitoring committee. At that time, 4401 patients had undergone randomization, with a median follow-up of 2.62 years. The relative risk of the primary outcome was 30% lower in the canagliflozin group than in the placebo group, with event rates of 43.2 and 61.2 per 1000 patient-years, respectively (hazard ratio, 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.59 to 0.82; P=0.00001). The relative risk of the renal-specific composite of end-stage kidney disease, a doubling of the creatinine level, or death from renal causes was lower by 34% (hazard ratio, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.53 to 0.81; P<0.001), and the relative risk of end-stage kidney disease was lower by 32% (hazard ratio, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.86; P=0.002). The canagliflozin group also had a lower risk of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke (hazard ratio, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.67 to 0.95; P=0.01) and hospitalization for heart failure (hazard ratio, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.47 to 0.80; P<0.001). There were no significant differences in rates of amputation or fracture. CONCLUSIONS In patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular events was lower in the canagliflozin group than in the placebo group at a median follow-up of 2.62 years

eWeightSmart - a smart approach to beef production management

    No full text
The use of technologies related to the Internet of Things or Cloud Computing are presently becoming common in different activity sectors. The use of these concepts has allowed to create solutions to solve several social problems, optimizing some of the day-to-day tasks. The agricultural sector is no exception, where increasingly, “smart” solutions begin to emerge in an attempt to reduce the complexity of some tasks or, on a more conceptual level, to make it possible to exploit new markets. Beef production, an agricultural sub-sector, is in many world regions, the main source of income, however, this sub-sector is not always managed in the most optimized way. Cattle body weight management is an important aspect of this sub-sector, providing precious measures for food, health care, breeding and stock selection. For the farmers, the weight measurement when the animal is alive, allows a better commercialization of it, making possible a better management of feeding expenses, reducing waste. It’s therefore necessary to find solutions to ensure a balance between beef production and the associated costs. This paper illustrates an approach to control the evolution of bovine animal’s weight by means of automatic weighing and control of the food amount that is made available to each animal. Using a set of sensors, a mobile platform and using NB-IoT, a communication network, it was possible to devise an approach that can reduce costs in the sector and also enable the exploitation of new business models.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    eSmallFarmer: improving of rural agriculture

The introduction of concepts such as IoT or cloud computing is increasingly common nowadays, in different sectors of activity where the agricultural sector is not an exception. The use of drones for pesticide application in pest control, or even the use of sensor networks to control the growth of crops, are quite common in the context of Agriculture 4.0. However, this technological advance does not happen at the same speed in remote regions where traditional agriculture is still dominant. These differences even contribute to increasing the gap between urban regions, where modernized agriculture predominates, and rural areas, are still strongly rooted in traditional agriculture. In addition to these technological differences, there are still major differences regarding access to market outlets, where the pandemic COVID-19 further aggravated the situation. Given the measures to contain the pandemic, which has resulted in the closure of virtually all services (for example, butchers and small markets), many of the small producers have been left without their only means of disposal, which has contributed strongly to the weakening of small agriculture. To mitigate the differences between the rural and urban areas, but also to mitigate the negative impacts caused by the pandemic COVID-19, the need for new livestock/business models was raised to create conditions to allow producers, in regions with low population density, access markets that until now were impossible. This paper presents a viable business model that contributes to reduce the differences between urban and rural environments, as well as, mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in this sector.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

eHealthCare - a medication monitoring approach for the elderly people

    No full text
For the regularly medicated population, the management of the posology is of utmost importance. With increasing average life expectancy, people tend to become older and more likely to have chronic medical disorders, consequently taking more medicines. This is predominant in the older population, but it’s not exclusive to this generation. It’s a common problem for all those suffering from chronic diseases, regardless of age group. Performing a correct management of the medicines stock, as well as, taking them at the ideal time, is not always easy and, in some cases, the diversity of medicines needed to treat a particular medical disorder is a proof of that. Knowing what to take, how much to take, and ensuring compliance with the medication intervals, for each medication in use, becomes a serious problem for those who experience this reality. The situation is aggravated when the posology admits variable amounts, intervals, and combinations depending on the patient’s health condition. This paper presents a solution that optimizes the management of medication of users who use the services of institutions that provide health care to the elderly (e.g., day care centers or nursing homes). Making use of the NB-IoT network, artificial intelligence algorithms, a set of sensors and an Arduino MKR NB 1500, this solution, in addition to the functionalities already described, eHealthCare also has mechanisms that allow identifying the non-adherence to medication by the elderly.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

PURPOSE: Substantial evidence indicates that youth physical fitness levels are an important marker of lifestyle and cardio-metabolic health profiles and predict future risk of chronic diseases. The reliability physical fitness tests have not been explored in Latino-American youth population. The present study aims to determine the test-retest reliability of the Fitness Test Battery in children and adolescents aged 9-17 years. METHODS: Participants were 229 Colombian youth (boys n=124 and girls n=105) aged 9 to 17.9 years old. Five components of field-based physical fitness were measured: 1) morphological component: height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, triceps skinfold, subscapular skinfold, and body fat (%) via impedance; 2) musculoskeletal component: handgrip and standing long jump test; 3) motor component: speed/agility test (4x10 m shuttle run); 4) flexibility component (hamstring and lumbar extensibility, sit-and-reach test); 5) cardiorespiratory component: 20-meter shuttle-run test (SRT) to estimate maximal oxygen consumption. The tests were performed two times, 1 week apart on the same day of the week, except for the SRT which was performed only once. Intra-observer technical errors of measurement (TEMs) and inter-rater (reliability) were assessed in the morphological component. RESULTS: Reliability for the Musculoskeletal, motor and cardiorespiratory fitness components was examined using Bland-Altman tests. For the morphological component, TEMs were small and reliability was greater than 95% of all cases. For the musculoskeletal, motor, flexibility and cardiorespiratory components, we found adequate reliability patterns in terms of systematic errors (bias) and random error (95% limits of agreement). When the fitness assessments were performed twice, the systematic error was nearly 0 for all tests, except for the sit and reach (mean difference: ?1.03 % [95% CI= ?4.35 % to ?2.28 %]. CONCLUSIONS: The results from this study indicate that the “Fuprecol study” field-based physical fitness administered by physical education teachers, was reliable for measuring health-related components of fitness in children and adolescents aged 9-17.9 years old in a school setting in Colombia
