Influence of the presence of sills on the behavior of brown trouts (Salmo trutta) in an experimental vertical slot fishway
Effects of various configurations of vertical slot fishways on fish behaviour in an experimental flume
The knowledge of fish behaviour within vertical slot fishways is limited. This paper describes fish progression through five pools of the 1:4 scale vertical slot fishway of the University of Poitiers (France). Fish behaviour is studied by video monitoring in the third pool of the model. The results are analyzed comparing the number of fish passages between the pools, the stabling zones used by fish in the monitoring pool during their progression and fish trajectories. Comparison of four different pool configurations is performed to estimate the effect of geometric variations on the upstream migration efficiency
The ability to investigate the complex nature of the interaction between fluids and sediments mechanisms and its role in bed transport and river stability is important to understand river evolution. Dunes or ripples are in frequent interaction with the bed. Hence, the topology of dune is related to the macroturbulence of the flow, mean flow field and the instantaneous structures of the vortices generated by these forms. Details of different mechanisms and hydrodynamic process generated behind a fixed single ripple are exposed by examining a laminar flow over the dune itself. Measurements with two-component Particle Image Velocimetry, three-component Stereo-PIV and flow visualization coupled with a numerical studies are performed to acquire and to obtain a detailed knowledge of the flow over the dune concerning the three-dimensionality, the instantaneous behavior of the flow and the large dynamic of vortex in the recirculation zone along the ripple. A set experiment generating turbulent flow is conducted in a hydro-sedimentary channel to detail the quantitative measurement of bedload transport processes in order to determine the effects of the turbulent flow on dune creation. A spatio-temporal monitoring of particles transport from crest to dune slip face is conducted to point the particular role of the recirculation region. Finally, the analyze and the effect of hydraulics conditions on the critical shear stresses for incipient particle motion as well as the formation and the migration of the mobile dune are emphasized by a geomorphological stPOITIERS-SCD-Bib.
The turbulent flow study in vertical slot fishway is necessary to improve this crossing device containing physical barriers to fish migration. Effectively, studies of existing fishways have shown their limits to ensure the crossing of small fish species with weak swimming abilities. The objective of our study is to adapt the turbulent flow to the fish species swimming abilities. The two-dimensional velocity measurements by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and three-dimensional velocity measurements by Doppler Velocimetry Acoustics (ADV) have shown that the flow kinematic quantities within the existing fishways are very important next to the small fish species capacities. One of strategies to answer at this problem is to introduce obstacles with cylindrical shape in the fishways pools. The adjunction of cylinders is intended to reduce the kinematics quantities of the turbulent flow within the fishways in order to adapt this hydraulic structure to the passage of small fish species. This strategy requires an optimization method to find the ideal location of the cylinders from numerical simulations of the flow (Star-CD code).POITIERS-SCD-Bib. électronique (861949901) / SudocSudocFranceF
Laminar junction flow at low Reynolds number: influence of the upstream region on the comparison between experiments and calculations
Scale effects of turbulence in vertical slot fishways : field ans laboratory measurement investigation
Scale effects arise due to force ratios which are not identical between a model and its full-scale prototype and result in deviations between the scaled model and prototype observations. This paper describes scales effects in vertical slot fishway flow by comparisons of turbulence behaviours measured in 1:4 scale laboratory model and full-scale fishway. Full-scale measurements are exposed. Flow topology, mean flow and unsteady velocity components features, turbulence kinetic energy profiles are evaluated and compared to measurements model
This work presents the development and the application of a velocimetry method for measuring the three components of the velocity. The Stereoscopic Particles Image Velocimetry technique is employed to study the flow around a surface-mounted block. The model of camera makes it possible to take into account the distortions. The 3D calibration-based reconstruction method is carried out by triangulation. The in-situ estimation of the accuracy are studied in angular-displacement configuration. The three-dimensionality and instationarity of vortex structures are highlighted with the help of this 3D instantaneous measurements, correlations and the POD. For the established flow, the topology, the dynamics and the evolution of the vortices are detailed. A numerical-experiment comparison is undertaken in order to validate a DNS simulation. The birth and the development of the vortices in the early stage of the flow are analysed with a topological study and the 3D instantaneous velocity field.POITIERS-BU Sciences (861942102) / SudocNANCY/VANDOEUVRE-INPL (545472102) / SudocSudocFranceF

Session A6: Fish Behaviour Analysis in a Vertical Slot Fishway
Abstract:
The improvement of devices that allow the upstream and downstream migration of fish through hydraulic constructions in rivers is nowadays a real priority to maintain the continuity of the biodiversity. Among lot of constructions, the vertical slot fishways (VSF) are commonly used and are effective in ensuring unhindered passage of the large sizes fish. A typical problem is that, first, fishes have to find the entrance of the fishway and, when they have found it, small sized fish can encountered difficulties to progress due to the inappropriate flow conditions. This comment is highly linked to the fish locomotion modes that depend to the species in regard with turbulence (kinetic energy, Reynolds stresses, vorticity, strain, eddy length scales) and the instantaneous flow features. In general, fish tend to avoid flows that have unpredictable, wide fluctuations in velocity that interfer with swimming trajectories. Unfortunately, those conditions based on fish swimming capabilities could not be anticipated by the commonly-used criteria to design VSF. At consequence, a better understanding of the relationship between fish swimming behaviour and accurate hydraulic conditions in a VSF is necessary.
This study investigated the swimming behaviour of small-sized chubs, (8 ≤ TL \u3c 12 cm), under experimental VSFs flow conditions. All the fish movements between pools were video-recorded and analyse with view point of fish movements between pools, stabling zones, transit time and trajectories. Flow turbulence and instantaneous evolution of the flow were analysed using PIV and ADV datas and were related with fish swimming behaviour. The influence of turbulence on the swimming behaviour was assessed for original VSFs and modified VSFs by addition of one or three cylinders. The results show that flow in existing vertical slot fishways can be adapted with the addition of vertical cylinders inside each pool
