Textual enhancements and comprehension with adult readers of English is China

The present study utilizes texts from social psychology to examine the effects of textual enhancements on reading comprehension with 185 native adult Chinese speakers learning English in China. Participants read two different vignettes, either with or without an adjunct. Each adjunct consisted of a ‘what’ question along with instructions to either ‘pause and consider’ or ‘pause and write.’ Participants also completed written recall, sentence completion, multiple-choice, and a topic familiarity question. Across passages, findings revealed significant effects of passage version on comprehension as measured via recall and sentence completion and no significant effects of passage version on multiple-choice questions. Participants scored almost the same on recall and sentence completion for versions with no adjuncts and versions with ‘pause and consider’ adjuncts, and they scored significantly lower on these assessment tasks for the version with pause and write adjuncts. Participants scored the same on multiple-choice questions for all three versions of both passages

Women Exiting Prostitution: Reports of Coercive Control in Intimate Relationships

There is burgeoning research on intimate partner violence (IPV) experiences among women globally. However, there is a dearth of research on IPV experiences among marginalized populations in Western countries. Over the past decade, IPV research has shifted from a focus only on physical and sexual violence to include coercive control experiences. These include a continuum of nonviolent behaviors centered on maintaining dominance over one’s partner. However, the empirical literature on examining coercive control among women in prostitution within non-commercial intimate partners is lacking. In this study, we analyzed interviews with 17 women exiting prostitution and examined reported IPV sexual, physical, and coercive control experiences perpetrated by intimate partners. Our findings revealed that participants experienced extensive physical and sexual IPV as well as physical and non-physical coercive control within non-commercial partner relationships. Coercive control was the most frequent type of abuse reported. All nine investigated coercive control tactics were represented within participants’ descriptions. Of these, exploitation (36%), intimidation (16.3%), degradation (12.5%), and deception (10.0%) were the most commonly identified. Understanding and assessing violent actions and control dynamics within non-commercial intimate partner relationships among women exiting prostitution have important implications for various stakeholders within the criminal justice system

The effects of embedded questions and elaborative interrogation questions on L2 reading comprehension

With 97 advanced second language (L2) learners of Spanish, the present study utilized domain specific texts to examine the effects of embedded “what” questions and elaborative “why” questions on reading comprehension. Participants read two different vignettes, either with or without the adjuncts, from a social psychology textbook, and then completed a written recall, multiple-choice items, and a topic familiarity questionnaire. Results revealed no significant effects of inserted adjunct questions for recall and multiple choice items. Mean recall scores for both the embedded and elaborative questions were almost the same for each passage, whereas the mean recall score for the version without adjuncts was lower. Results are discussed in light of previous research and suggestions for more research of this nature are offered
