The mass of the black hole in GRS 1915+105: new constraints from IR spectroscopy
GRS 1915+105 has the largest mass function of any Galactic black hole system,
although the error is relatively large. Here we present spectroscopic analysis
of medium-resolution IR VLT archival data of GRS 1915+105 in the K-band. We
find an updated ephemeris, and report on attempts to improve the mass function
by a refinement of the radial velocity estimate. We show that the spectra are
significantly affected by the presence of phase-dependent CO bandhead emission,
possibly originating from the accretion disc: we discuss the impact this has on
efforts to better constrain the black hole mass. We report on a possible way to
measure the radial velocity utilising apparent H-band atomic absorption
features and also discuss the general uncertainty of the system parameters of

Addendum: "The Dynamics of M15: Observations of the Velocity Dispersion Profile and Fokker-Planck Models" (ApJ, 481, 267 [1997])
It has recently come to our attention that there are axis scale errors in
three of the figures of Dull et al. (1997, hereafter D97). D97 presented
Fokker-Planck models for the collapsed-core globular cluster M15 that include a
dense, centrally concentrated population of neutron stars and massive white
dwarfs, but do not include a central black hole. In this Addendum, we present
corrected versions of Figures 9, 10, and 12, and an expanded version of Figure
6. This latter figure, which shows the full run of the velocity dispersion
profile, indicates that the D97 model predictions are in good agreement with
the moderately rising HST-STIS velocity dispersion profile for M15 reported by
Gerssen et al. (2002, astro-ph/0209315). Thus, a central black hole is not
required to fit the new STIS velocity measurements, provided that there is a
sufficient population of neutron stars and massive white dwarfs. This
conclusion is consistent with the findings of Gerssen et al. (2002,
astro-ph/0210158), based on a reapplication of their Jeans equation analysis

The mass of the neutron star in the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1012+5307
We have measured the radial velocity variation of the white dwarf secondary in the binary system containing the millisecond pulsar PSR J1012 + 5307. Combined with the orbital parameters of the radio pulsar, we infer a mass ratio q (=M-1/M-2) = 10.5 +/- 0.5 OUT optical spectroscopy has also allowed us to determine the mass of the white dwarf companion by fitting the spectrum to a grid of DA model atmospheres: we estimate M-2 = 0.16 +/- 0.02 M., and hence the mass of the neutron star is 1.64 +/- 0.22 M., where the error is dominated by that of M-2. The orbital inclination is 52 +/- 4 deg. For an initial neutron star mass of similar to 1.4 M., only a few tenths of a solar mass at most has been successfully accreted over the lifetime of the progenitor low-mass X-ray binary. If the initial mass of the secondary was similar to 1 M., our result suggests that the mass transfer may have been non-conservative
Multiwavelength Observations of GX 339-4 in 1996. III. Keck Spectroscopy
As part of our multiwavelength campaign of observations of GX 339-4 in 1996
we present our Keck spectroscopy performed on May 12 UT. At this time, neither
the ASM on the RXTE nor BATSE on the CGRO detected the source. The optical
emission was still dominated by the accretion disk with V approximately 17 mag.
The dominant emission line is H alpha, and for the first time we are able to
resolve a double peaked profile. The peak separation Delta v = 370 +/- 40 km/s.
Double peaked H alpha emission lines have been seen in the quiescent optical
counterparts of many black hole X-ray novae. However, we find that the peak
separation is significantly smaller in GX 339-4, implying that the optical
emission comes from a larger radius than in the novae. The H alpha emission
line may be more akin to the one in Cygnus X-1, where it is very difficult to
determine if the line is intrinsically double peaked because absorption and

RXTE Studies of X-ray Spectral Variations with Accretion Rate in 4U 1915-05
We present the results of detailed spectral studies of the ultra-compact low
mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1915-05 carried out with the Rossi X-ray Timing
Explorer (RXTE) during 1996. 4U 1915-05 is an X-ray burster (XRB) known to
exhibit a ~199-day modulation in its 2--12 keV flux. Observations were
performed with the PCA and HEXTE instruments on RXTE at roughly one-month
intervals to sample this long-term period and study accretion rate-related
spectral changes. We obtain good fits with a model consisting of a blackbody
and an exponentially cut-off power law. The spectral parameters are strongly
correlated with both the broad-band (2--50 keV) luminosity and the position in
the color-color diagram, with the source moving from a low hard state to a high
soft state as the accretion rate increases. The blackbody component appears to
drive the spectral evolution. Our results are consistent with a geometry in
which the soft component arises from an optically thick boundary layer and the
hard component from an extended Comptonizing corona. Comparing our results with
those of a similar study of the brighter source 4U 1820-30 (Bloser et al.
2000), we find that the two ultra-compact LMXBs occupy similar spectral states

The Frequency of Binary Stars in the Core of 47 Tucanae
Differential time series photometry has been derived for 46422 main-sequence
stars in the core of 47 Tucanae. The observations consisted of near-continuous
160-s exposures alternating between the F555W and F814W filters for 8.3 days in
1999 July with WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. Using Fourier and other
search methods, eleven detached eclipsing binaries and fifteen W UMa stars have
been discovered, plus an additional ten contact or near-contact non-eclipsing
systems. After correction for non-uniform area coverage of the survey, the
observed frequencies of detached eclipsing binaries and W UMa's within 90
arcseconds of the cluster center are 0.022% and 0.031% respectively. The
observed detached eclipsing binary frequency, the assumptions of a flat binary
distribution with log period and that the eclipsing binaries with periods
longer than about 4 days have essentially their primordial periods, imply an
overall binary frequency of 13 +/- 6 %. The observed W UMa frequency and the
additional assumptions that W UMa's have been brought to contact according to
tidal circularization and angular momentum loss theory and that the contact
binary lifetime is 10^{9} years, imply an overall binary frequency of 14 +/- 4
%. An additional 71 variables with periods from 0.4 - 10 days have been found
which are likely to be BY Draconis stars in binary systems. The radial
distribution of these stars is the same as that of the eclipsing binaries and W
UMa stars and is more centrally concentrated than average stars, but less so
than the blue straggler stars. A distinct subset of six of these stars fall in
an unexpected domain of the CMD, comprising what we propose to call red

The intriguing nature of the high energy gamma ray source XSSJ12270-4859
The nature of the hard X-ray source XSSJ12270-4859 is still unclear though it
was claimed to be a magnetic Cataclysmic Variable. We here present a broad-band
X-ray and gamma ray study based on a recent XMM-Newton observation and archival
INTEGRAL and RXTE data. From the Fermi/LAT 1-year point source catalogue, we
tentatively associate XSSJ12270-4859 with 1FGLJ1227.9-4852, a source of high
energy gamma rays with emission up to 10GeV. We complement the study with UV
photometry from XMM-Newton and ground-based optical and near-IR photometry. The
X-ray emission is highly variable showing flares and intensity dips. The X-ray
flares consist of flare-dip pairs. Flares are also detected in the UV range but
not the dips. Aperiodic dipping behaviour is also observed during X-ray
quiescence but not in the UV. The 0.2-100keV spectrum is featureless and
described by a power law model with Gamma=1.7. The 100MeV-10GeV spectrum is
instead represented by a power law index of 2.45. The luminosity ratio between
0.1-100GeV and 0.2--100keV is ~0.8, hence the GeV emission is a significant
component of the total energy output. Furthermore, the X-ray spectrum does not
greatly change during flares, quiescence and the dips seen in quiescence but it
hardens during the post-flare dips. Optical photometry reveals a period of
4.32hr likely related to the binary orbit. Near-IR, possibly ellipsoidal,
variations are detected. Large amplitude variability on shorter (tens mins)
timescales are found to be non-periodic. The observed variability at all
wavelengths and the spectral characteristics strongly favour a low-mass
atypical low-luminosity X-ray binary and are against a Cataclysmic Variable
nature. The association with a Fermi/LAT high energy gamma ray source further

Tomography of X-ray Nova Muscae 1991: Evidence for ongoing mass transfer and stream-disc overflow
We present a spectroscopic analysis of the black hole binary Nova Muscae 1991
in quiescence using data obtained in 2009 with MagE on the Magellan Clay
telescope and in 2010 with IMACS on the Magellan Baade telescope at the Las
Campanas Observatory. Emission from the disc is observed in H alpha, H beta and
Ca II (8662 A). A prominent hotspot is observed in the Doppler maps of all
three emission lines. The existence of this spot establishes ongoing mass
transfer from the donor star in 2009-2010 and, given its absence in the
1993-1995 observations, demonstrates the presence of a variable hotspot in the
system. We find the radial distance to the hotspot from the black hole to be
consistent with the circularization radius. Our tomograms are suggestive of
stream-disc overflow in the system. We also detect possible Ca II (8662 A)

X-ray Spectroscopy of Candidate Ultracompact X-ray Binaries
We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neutron star/low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs) 4U 1850-087 and 4U 0513-40 as part of our continuing study of
known and candidate ultracompact binaries. The LMXB 4U 1850-087 is one of four
systems in which we had previously inferred an unusual Ne/O ratio in the
absorption along the line of sight, most likely from material local to the
binaries. However, our recent Chandra X-ray Observatory LETGS spectrum of 4U
1850-087 finds a Ne/O ratio by number of 0.22+/-0.05, smaller than previously
measured and consistent with the expected interstellar value. We propose that
variations in the Ne/O ratio due to source variability, as previously observed
in these sources, can explain the difference between the low- and
high-resolution spectral results for 4U 1850-087. Our XMM-Newton RGS
observation of 4U 0513-40 also shows no unusual abundance ratios in the
absorption along the line of sight. We also present spectral results from a
third candidate ultracompact binary, 4U 1822-000, whose spectrum is well fit by
an absorbed power-law + blackbody model with absorption consistent with the
expected interstellar value. Finally, we present the non-detection of a fourth
candidate ultracompact binary, 4U 1905+000, with an upper limit on the source
luminosity of < 1 x 10^{32} erg s^{-1}. Using archival data, we show that the
