The sharp process of deflation which business has undergoneduring recent years has vested statutes relating to the reductionof corporate capital with an importance little appreciated whenmost of such statutes were enacted. Since 1929 an abrupt reversalof the previous tendency to increase corporate capitalizationshas taken place. Enormous sums of money and the interestsof many people have been subjected to the procedures forreduction of capital prescribed by the various corporation acts.With a few exceptions the protection which these acts afford tothe creditors of the corporation involved is entirely inadequate,a situation which may be ascribed largely to a failure to comprehendthe position of the creditor and the accounting problemsinvolved in the reduction situation

Protecting the Older Worker

Unlike racial discrimination, age discrimination statutes do not prohibit all forms of discrimination but only those forms that are arbitrary. In this respect age is most analogous to sex as a basis of discrimination: in neither case has a conclusive statutory presumption been made that these factors are irrelevant in an employment situation; in both situations the employer must make his decision to hire or not to hire on the abilities of the individual and not on assumptions, proven or unproven, about the class as a whole. This note considers the extent of arbitrary age discrimination and what measures have been taken and should be taken to combat it

Fundamental results from microgravity cell experiments with possible commericial applications

Some of the major milestones are presented for studies in cell biology that were conducted by the Soviet Union and the United States in the upper layers of the atmosphere and in outer space for more than thirty-five years. The goals have changed as new knowledge is acquired and the priorities for the use of microgravity have shifted toward basic research and commercial applications. Certain details concerning the impact of microgravity on cell systems is presented. However, it needs to be emphasized that in planning and conducting microgravity experiments, there are some important prerequisites not normally taken into account. Apart from the required background knowledge of previous microgravity and ground-based experiments, the investigator should have the understanding of the hardware as a physical unit, the complete knowledge of its operation, the range of its capabilities and the anticipation of problems that may occur. Moreover, if the production of commercial products in space is to be manifested, data obtained from previous microgravity experiments must be used to optimize the design of flight hardware
