    SBVR to OWL 2 Mappings - An Automatable and Structural-Rooted Aproach

    La amplia aplicabilidad del mapeo de reglas de negocio en sentencias ontológicas ha sido recientemente reconocida. Algunas de las aplicaciones más importantes son: (1) la utilización de razonadores ontológicos para probar la consistencia de la información del dominio del negocio, (2) la generación de una ontología destinada a ser utilizada en la etapa de análisis del proceso de desarrollo de software, y (3) la posibilidad de encapsular la especificación declarativa del conocimiento del negocio en un sistema de información mediante la implementación de una ontología. El lenguaje denominado Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) brinda soporte a tal enfoque al proveer al experto del negocio una forma lingüistica de describir semánticamente los conceptos y especificar las reglas de negocio, en forma independiente al diseño del sistema de información. Aunque trabajos previos han presentado algunas propuestas, resta definir un enfoque exhaustivo y automatizable de tales mapeos. Este trabajo presenta un conjunto amplio y detallado de transformaciones que permiten la generación automatizable de una ontología implementada en OWL 2, partiendo de la especificación SBVR del dominio del negocio. Tales transformaciones están basadas en la especificación estructural de ambos estándars, y son descriptas mediante un caso de estudio. Se ha realizado un ejemplo real de validación, abordando la factibilidad de los mapeos mediante la evalución de la calidad de la ontología resultante.Wide applicability of mapping business rules expressions to ontology statements have already been recognized. Some of the most important applications are: (1) using of ontology reasoners to prove the consistency of business domain information, (2) generation of an ontology intended to be used in the analysis stage of a software development process, and (3) the possibility of encapsulate the declarative specication of business knowledge into information software systems by means of an implemented ontology. The Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) supports that approach by providing business people with a linguistic way to semantically describe business concepts and specify business rules in an independent way of any information system design. Previous work have presented some proposals but an exhaustive and automatable approach for them still is lacking. This work presents a broad and detailed set of transformations that allows the automatable generation of an OWL 2 ontology from the SBVR specications of a business domain. Such transformations are rooted on the structural specication of both standards and are depicted through a case study.     Pedagogically-driven Ontology Network for Conceptualizing the e-Learning Assessment Domain

    The use of ontologies as tools to guide the generation, organization and personalization of e-learning content, including e-assessment, has drawn attention of the researchers because ontologies can represent the knowledge of a given domain and researchers use the ontology to reason about it. Although the use of these semantic technologies tends to enhance technology-based educational processes, the lack of validation to improve the quality of learning in their use makes the educator feel reluctant to use them.     Stakeholder´s analysis in e-learning software process development

    The success of an e-learning project depends largely on the quality of applications and tools used to support the learning process. Meanwhile, the quality of software depends largely on proper stakeholders? identification in the requirements stage during the development process. Although some studies exist which have identified key stakeholders in e-learning domain, most of them do not perform a deep analysis of the stakeholders and their contexts, necessary to consider educational and cultural issues in this type of environment. The aim of this paper is to present the application of a method for the identification and analysis of stakeholders, which is adapted to e-learning domain.     Publicación de Datos Abiertos siguiendo los Principios de Datos Enlazados

    Este trabajo presenta una arquitectura basada en un modelo semántico para la publicación de datos abiertos y un método práctico para el poblado y persistencia de dicho modelo utilizando el lenguaje D2RQ y el Triple Store Jena TDB. Actualmente, cada vez son más los gobiernos que publican sus datos siguiendo la doctrina de Gobierno Abierto. Si bien existen varias propuestas de cómo realizar dicha publicación, ninguna de ellas es completa y, por lo tanto, no pueden ser facilmente replicadas. El objetivo de este trabajo es ser una guía práctica para la publicación de datos basados en un modelo semántico utilizando las herramientas previamente mencionadas.This paper presents an architecture based on a semantic model for publishing open data and a practical method for the instantiation and persistence of this model using D2RQ language and Jena TDB Triple Store. Currently, more and more governments publish their data following the doctrine of Open Government. While there are several proposals of how to perform this publication, none of them are complete and, therefore, they can not be easily replicated.     Knowledge discovery through ontology matching: An approach based on an Artificial Neural Network model

    The fundamental principle of the Semantic Web is the creation and use of semantic annotations connected to formal descriptions, such as domain ontologies. The lack of an integrated view of all web nodes and the existence of heterogeneous domain ontologies drive new challenges in the discovery of knowledge resources, which are relevant to a user´s request. New eficient approaches for developing web intelligence and helping users to avoid irrelevant search results on the web have recently appeared. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) being one of the most recent ones. However,there still remains a lot of work to be done in this area. This work makes a contribution to the field of knowledge-resource discovery and ontology matching techniques for the Semantic Web by presenting an approach which is based on an ANN classifier.     Towards a semantic model for heritage description

    The new ICTs make available a set of tools that can be useful for the digitalization and access of both material and immaterial heritage. Regarding access to digitized heritage, if we want it to be for different people with different training backgrounds, it is necessary to have an element that allows us to "understand" the digitized information. The key element is ontology. This work presents an ontology network for the semantic description of both cultural and natural heritage, as well as each one of the types of manifestations, their actors and historical periods. This network of ontologies will not only allow access to heritage data, but will allow such data to be processed and integrated; further to that, it will become possible to draw conclusions through automatic reasoning.Las nuevas TICs ponen a disposición de la comunidad un conjunto de herramientas que pueden ser útiles para la digitalización y para el acceso al patrimonio tanto material como inmaterial. En cuanto al acceso del patrimonio digitalizado, si pretendemos que el mismo sea para diferentes personas con diferentes conocimientos es necesario contar con un elemento que permita “entender” la información digitalizada. Ese elemento clave son las ontologías. En este trabajo se muestra una red de ontologías para describir la semántica del patrimonio tanto cultural como natural, así como también cada uno de los tipos de manifestaciones, sus actores y períodos históricos.     A set of ontology design patterns for reengineering SBVR statements into OWL/SWRL ontologies

    The interest in the use of ontologies for creating more intelligent and effective enterprise information systems has increased considerably in recent years. The most critical aspects during the development of these systems are: (1) to identify the ontology concepts and (2) to make explicit the business rules by means of the ontology axioms. In order to address these issues, mappings of business rules expressions to ontology statements based on different languages were proposed. Despite the efforts made in this area, some work remain to be done. This work presents a set of ontology design patterns providing a way to obtain an OWL/SWRL ontology by applying metamodel transformation rules over the SBVR specification of a business domain. Patterns are rooted in the structural specification of the standards, providing a set of mappings readily usable for business people or developers concerned with the implementation of a mapping tool. Moreover, translations from SBVR to SWRL language are presented in order to fill the gap in the expressive power of SBVR and OWL.     Approaching the feasibility of SBVR as modeling language for ontology development: An exploratory experiment

    Ontology development techniques still constitute an open research area despite its importance in semantic aware information systems. Until now, most methods have used UML in supporting ontology development process. Recent works propose the mapping of business rules expressions to ontology statements as a building technique by means of SBVR language. However, there is still no experimental research comparing such approaches. Aim of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of mapping business domain expressions to ontology statements. An exploratory experiment comparing performance of techniques based on UML and SBVR languages is presented. Comparison is rooted in the quality assessment of the ontologies developed by 10 equally sized groups randomly conformed by 30 undergraduate engineering students and applying such techniques. Developed ontologies largely outperform the minimally acceptable quality, according to the considered quality assessment framework. There is no statistical significant difference between the quality scores of the ontologies developed by means of UML and SBVR techniques, in any of the assessed quality dimensions. The feasibility of mapping business domain expressions to ontology statements is shown: ontologies developed by means of a SBVR based approach at least equate the quality of ontologies developed by using an UML based method. Results confirm previous research about the effectiveness of UML approaches for conceptualizing lightweight ontologies while stressing the potential of the SBVR language to express complex notions of a domain of interest.     Semantic modeling of portfolio assessment in e-learning environment

    In learning environment, portfolio is used as a tool to keep track of learner’s progress. Particularly, when it comes to e-learning, continuous assessment allows greater customization and efficiency in learning process and prevents students lost interest in their study. Also, each student has his own characteristics and learning skills that must be taken into account in order to keep learner`s interest. So, personalized monitoring is the key to guarantee the success of technology-based education. In this context, portfolio assessment emerge as the solution because is an easy way to allow teacher organize and personalize assessment according to students characteristic and need. A portfolio assessment can contain various types of assessment like formative assessment, summative assessment, hetero or self-assessment and use different instruments like multiple choice questions, conceptual maps, and essay among others. So, a portfolio assessment represents a compilation of all assessments must be solved by a student in a course, it documents progress and set targets. In previous work, it has been proposed a conceptual framework that consist of an ontology network named AOnet which is a semantic tool conceptualizing different types of assessments. Continuing that work, this paper presents a proposal to implement portfolios assessment in e-learning environments.
