Leptonic decays of the eta meson with the WASA detector at CELSIUS

Decay channels of the eta meson with at least one lepton pair in the final state are discussed. Preliminary results on electron-positron pair production from the pd->He eta reaction from the WASA experiment at CELSIUS are presented.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, prepared for Symposium on Meson Physics at COSY-11 and WASA-at-COSY, Cracow, 17-22 June 200

Dilepton production in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies

We present a unified description of the vector meson and dilepton production in elementary and in heavy ion reactions. The production of vector mesons (ρ,ω\rho,\omega) is described via the excitation of nuclear resonances (RR). The theoretical framework is an extended vector meson dominance model (eVMD). The treatment of the resonance decays RNVR\longmapsto NV with arbitrary spin is covariant and kinematically complete. The eVMD includes thereby excited vector meson states in the transition form factors. This ensures correct asymptotics and provides a unified description of photonic and mesonic decays. The resonance model is successfully applied to the ω\omega production in p+pp+p reactions. The same model is applied to the dilepton production in elementary reactions (p+p,p+dp+p, p+d). Corresponding data are well reproduced. However, when the model is applied to heavy ion reactions in the BEVALAC/SIS energy range the experimental dilepton spectra measured by the DLS Collaboration are significantly underestimated at small invariant masses. As a possible solution of this problem the destruction of quantum interference in a dense medium is discussed. A decoherent emission through vector mesons decays enhances the corresponding dilepton yield in heavy ion reactions. In the vicinity of the ρ/ω\rho/\omega-peak the reproduction of the data requires further a substantial collisional broadening of the ρ\rho and in particular of the ω\omega meson.Comment: 32 pages revtex, 19 figures, to appear in PR

A versatile method for simulating pp -> ppe+e- and dp -> pne+e-p_spec reactions

We have developed a versatile software package for the simulation of di-electron production in pppp and dpdp collisions at SIS energies. Particular attention has been paid to incorporate different descriptions of the Dalitz decay ΔNe+e\Delta \to N e^+e^- via a common interface. In addition, suitable parameterizations for the virtual bremsstrahlung process NNNNe+eNN \to NN e^+e^- based on one-boson exchange models have been implemented. Such simulation tools with high flexibility of the framework are important for the interpretation of the di-electron data taken with the HADES spectrometer and the design of forthcoming experiments

Exclusive Measurements of pp -> dpi+pi0: Double-Pionic Fusion without ABC Effect

    Get PDF
Exclusive measurements of the reaction pp -> dpi+pi0 have been carried out at T_p = 1.1 GeV at the CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The isovector pi+pi0 channel exhibits no enhancement at low invariant pipi masses, i. e. no ABC effect. The differential distributions are in agreement with the conventional t-channel Delta-Delta excitation process, which also accounts for the observed energy dependence of the total cross section. This is an update of a previously published version -- see important note at the end of the article

Study of the p p -> p p pi+ pi- Reaction in the Low-Energy Tail of the Roper Resonance

Exclusive measurements of the p p -> p p pi+ pi- reaction have been carried out at Tp = 775 MeV at CELSIUS using the PROMICE/WASA setup. Together with data obtained at lower energy they point to a dominance of the Roper excitation in this process. From the observed interference of its decay routes N* -> N sigma and N* -> Delta pi -> N sigma their energy-dependent relative branching ratio is determined

Classification and Prediction of Survival in Patients with the Leukemic Phase of Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma

We have used cDNA arrays to investigate gene expression patterns in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with leukemic forms of cutaneous T cell lymphoma, primarily Sezary syndrome (SS). When expression data for patients with high blood tumor burden (Sezary cells >60% of the lymphocytes) and healthy controls are compared by Student's t test, at P < 0.01, we find 385 genes to be differentially expressed. Highly overexpressed genes include Th2 cells–specific transcription factors Gata-3 and Jun B, as well as integrin β1, proteoglycan 2, the RhoB oncogene, and dual specificity phosphatase 1. Highly underexpressed genes include CD26, Stat-4, and the IL-1 receptors. Message for plastin-T, not normally expressed in lymphoid tissue, is detected only in patient samples and may provide a new marker for diagnosis. Using penalized discriminant analysis, we have identified a panel of eight genes that can distinguish SS in patients with as few as 5% circulating tumor cells. This suggests that, even in early disease, Sezary cells produce chemokines and cytokines that induce an expression profile in the peripheral blood distinctive to SS. Finally, we show that using 10 genes, we can identify a class of patients who will succumb within six months of sampling regardless of their tumor burden

Observation of strong final-state effects in pi+ production in pp collisions at 400 MeV

Differential cross sections of the reactions ppdπ+pp \to d\pi^+ and pppnπ+pp \to pn\pi^+ have been measured at Tp=400T_p = 400 MeV by detecting the charged ejectiles in the angular range 40ΘLab214^0 \leq \Theta_{Lab} \leq 21^\circ. The deduced total cross sections agree well with those published previously for neighbouring energies. The invariant mass spectra are observed to be strongly affected by Δ\Delta production and NNNN final-state interaction. The data are well described by Monte Carlo simulations including both these effects. The ratio of pppnπ+pp \to pn\pi^+ and ppdπ+pp \to d\pi^+ cross sections also compares favourably to a recent theoretical prediction which suggests a dominance of npnp-production in the relative 3S1^3S_1-state.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
