Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    Get PDF

Carnitine Supplementation Modulates High Dietary Copper-Induced Oxidative Toxicity and Reduced Performance in Laying Hens

    No full text
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of l-carnitine on performance, egg quality and certain biochemical parameters in laying hens fed a diet containing high levels of copper proteinate. Forty-eight 42-week-old laying hens were divided into four groups with four replicates. The laying hens were fed with a basal diet (control) or the basal diet supplemented with either 400 mg carnitine (Car)/kg diet, 800 mg copper proteinate (CuP)/kg diet or 400 mg carnitine + 800 mg copper (Car+CuP)/kg diet, for 6 weeks. Supplemental CuP decreased feed consumption (p < 0.01), feed efficiency and egg production (p < 0.001), as compared to control. The combination of Car and CuP increased (p < 0.001) egg production and feed efficiency as compared to CuP. The activities of alanine aminotransferase (p < 0.05) and alkaline phosphatase (p < 0.01) were increased, while lactate dehydrogenase activity was decreased (p < 0.001) by supplemental CuP and Car+CuP. Supplemental CuP caused an increase in plasma malondialdehyde (p < 0.01) and nitric oxide levels (p < 0.05). In the Car+CuP group, this increase was observed to have been reduced significantly (p < 0.05). Furthermore, Car+CuP increased (p < 0.05) glucose level. These results indicate that the carnitine and copper combination may prevent the possible adverse effects of high dietary copper on performance and lipid peroxidation in hens

Cytological evaluation of pleural effusion with cell block technique in a dog

    No full text
In this case, the use of the Cell Block technique in the diagnosis of pleural effusion collected from a 3.5 year old Setter Spaniel breed dog was investigated. The dog was presented to Ankara University Small Animal Hospital with the history of acute dyspnea, weakness, exercise intolerance and tachypnea for a week. Routine clinical examinations including blood testing were performed. Abdominal distension, pleural effusion and cyanotic cranial mucous membranes were remarkable during physical examination. The pleural fluid collected by thoracocentesis was brownish-colored, cloudy and has contained granular materials. The specimen collected from the dog was separated into three aliquots, one part was processed in a routine manner for cytological examination by cytocentrifugation, and the other parts of the sample were used for a cell block and bacteriological analysis. In microbiological analysis, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. were isolated. The cytocentrifuged preparations and cell block sections revealed septic effusion. The cell block technique demonstrated morphological details better than cytocentrifugation. In conclusion, in this case, cytology and bacteriology of effusion, routine blood tests, abdominal radiography and echocardiography showed that the pleural effusion was resulted from pyothorax due to severe tricuspid dysplasia

The role of centrifuged liquid-based cytology in the evaluation of the endometrium in mares

Endometritis is frequently encountered in brood mare practice and is one of the main causes of infertility. Several methods, including among others cytology. bacteriology and histopathology, are used for diagnosis, however, even the combined use of these methods may not produce a definitive result. The objective of this study was to make an assessment of the diagnostic efficiency of centrifuged liquid-based cytology (LBC) in comparison to the determination of: 1) the presence of polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) in the uterine epithelium and stratum compactum by histopathology; 2) the presence of PMNs by cytology and 3) the presence of uterine infection by microbiology. Fifty mares of varying age, which belonged to the Jockey Club of Turkey, were used in this study. Endometrial samples were harvested using the cytobrush (CB) and endometrial biopsy (EB) techniques for microbiological, Cytological and histopathological examinations. The comparison of liquid-based cytology (LBC) with histopathological diagnosis (HD), which is considered to be the best standard, showed that the sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), predictive value of positive test (PVP), and predictive value of negative test (PVN) of LBC were 0.5000, 0.4000, 0.7692 and 0.6087, respectively. No coherence was detected between the results of these two methods (P = 0.0166). Furthermore, it was ascertained that LBC failed in detecting degenerative and fibrotic alterations in the endometrial glands. LBC slides provide sharp images of well-dispersed cells, and enable greater diagnostic sensitivity and certainty. Thus. as the area examined is small, the identification of the target cells is relatively easy

Cholangiocarcinoma of intrahepatic bile ducts with disseminated metastases in a Siamese cat: a case report

    No full text
This case report concerns a four-year-old female Siamese cat which presented with inappetence, vomiting and weight loss. During routine clinical examinations of the patient, numerous neoplastic masses were detected in the liver, lungs and abdomen. Upon a request from the owner, the cat was euthanised. At necropsy, the primary tumour was detected in the liver. The tumour was greyish-white, firm, and multi-nodular. There were metastases in the portal lymph nodes, diaphragm, omentum, colon, caecum and lungs. Histologically, the tumour was characterised by a tubular pattern with periodic acid-Schiff-positive secretory material in glandular and canal structures. The neoplastic cells were positive to broad-spectrum cytokeratin. Histochemical and immunohistochemical stains were consistent with an intrahepatic bile duct carcinoma. This is the first case to report the metastasis of a cholangiocellular carcinoma to the colon in cats

Surgical removal of a luxated lens in a common buzzard (Buteo buteo)

The aim of this study were to report a case of unilateral spontaneous anterior lens luxation associated with retinal detachment and surgical removal in a common buzzard. An adult common buzzard (Buteo buteo) of unknown sex, free-fly was found unable to fly on a pasture during the day. In the left eye the lens was luxated into the anterior chamber. The luxated lens was removed from the anterior chamber by an irrigation/aspiration technique after corneal incision. During the follow-up period of 3 weeks no signs of glaucoma or any other complications was detected. This is the first case of spontaneous anterior lens dislocation and surgical removal in a common buzzard reported in the literature. It shows that a careful clinical examination can identify lesions which have been considered as rare in this wild bird so far

Clinical, histopathological and surgical evaluations of persistent oropharyngeal membrane case in a calf

A male, 4 days old and 20 kg Simmental calf was evaluated for regurgitation and hyper salivation since birth. The mother became pregnant by artificial insemination and the pregnancy was the second of the mother. A membrane closed the pharynx and a diverticulum on dorsal of this membrane was seen during oropharyngeal examination through inspection. Membrane was also viewed by endoscopy under general anaesthesia. Larynx and oesophagus were imaged by bronchoscopy through the back side of the membrane. After these applications, it was decided that soft palate adhered firmly to the root of tongue causing congenital atresia. Surgical treatment of oropharyngeal membrane was carried out under general anaesthesia. Firstly, tracheotomy was performed for to ease breathing and membrane removed by electrocautery application. Intensive fluid accumulation and oedema formation at the incision area were detected by endoscopic examination following operation and the calf had severe dyspnoea two days after operation and died due to respiratory insufficiency. At necropsy, severe inflammatory reaction, laryngeal oedema and intensive salivation at the surgical side was determined. Direct imaging techniques should be used to determine in the closed oropharyngeal lumen. Moreover, nasopharyngoscopy should be considered to image larynx and oesophageal way. Present case is the first report with concern to pharyngeal membrane formation together with direct imaging and surgical procedures. Therefore, it was considered that this case report could be useful for colleagues and literatures

Transverse momentum and pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons in pp collisions at (s)\sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV

Measurements of inclusive charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions are presented for proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central region, dN(charged)/d(eta) for |eta| < 0.5, are 3.48 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.13 (syst.) and 4.47 +/- 0.04 (stat.) +/- 0.16 (syst.), respectively. The results at 0.9 TeV are in agreement with previous measurements and confirm the expectation of near equal hadron production in p-pbar and pp collisions. The results at 2.36 TeV represent the highest-energy measurements at a particle collider to date

Measurement of the charge ratio of atmospheric muons with the CMS detector

    No full text
We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC. Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/ c to 1 TeV/ c . The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766±0.0032(stat.)±0.0032(syst.) , independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/ c . This is the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta the data are consistent with an increase of the charge ratio, in agreement with cosmic ray shower models and compatible with previous measurements by deep-underground experiments. We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC.
