Synthetic Quantum Systems
So far proposed quantum computers use fragile and environmentally sensitive
natural quantum systems. Here we explore the new notion that synthetic quantum
systems suitable for quantum computation may be fabricated from smart
nanostructures using topological excitations of a stochastic neural-type
network that can mimic natural quantum systems. These developments are a
technological application of process physics which is an information theory of
reality in which space and quantum phenomena are emergent, and so indicates the
deep origins of quantum phenomena. Analogous complex stochastic dynamical
systems have recently been proposed within neurobiology to deal with the
emergent complexity of biosystems, particularly the biodynamics of higher brain
function. The reasons for analogous discoveries in fundamental physics and

Women experience gender discrimination in judgements of competence, even by other women. Clothing cues can subtly influence professional perceptions of women. The aim of this study was to investigate how minor manipulations to female office clothing affect the judgements of competence of them by other UK females and to examine whether such effects differ with occupational status. One group of female university students (n = 54) and one group of employed females (n = 90), all from London and the East of England, rated images of faceless female targets, on a global competence measure derived from six competence ratings (of intelligence, confidence, trustworthiness, responsibility, authority, and organisation). The dress style was conservative but varied slightly by skirt length and the number of buttons unfastened on a blouse. The female targets were ascribed different occupational roles, varying by status (high – senior manager, or low - receptionist). Participants viewed the images for a maximum of 5 s before rating them. Overall participants rated the senior manager less favourably when her clothing was more provocative, but more favourably when dressed more conservatively (longer skirt, buttoned up blouse). This interaction between clothing and status was not present for the receptionist. Employed participants also rated females lower than did student participants. The American Misconceptions About the HPV Vaccine
For centuries, society has struggled to combat numerous diseases due to many misconceptions about vaccination. Currently, there are many speculations regarding the efficacy and safety of vaccines, as well as the motives of the healthcare system that have caused many Americans to refuse vaccination. In modern day America, the human papillomavirus has become a major issue as it has been reported to infect seventy-five of individuals between the ages of fifteen and fifty (Torre et al. 2007). However, the HPV vaccine is stigmatized as harmful by the public as there are many reported effects. Despite the social stigma and medical injustices, the HPV vaccine is an efficient method of preventing many cancers in both men and women, at a mitigated risk. With physician recommendations and public health campaigns, medical professionals can increase the rate of children that receive the HPV vaccine in order to decrease the burden of HPV-related diseases. Preventative methods, such as vaccines, have provided humanity with a successful approach to mitigate infection and mortality rates of worldwide diseases
Nonperturbative aspects of the quark-photon vertex
The electromagnetic interaction with quarks is investigated through a
relativistic, electromagnetic gauge-invariant treatment. Gluon dressing of the
quark-photon vertex and the quark self-energy functions is described by the
inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation and the
Schwinger-Dyson equation in the rainbow approximation respectively. Results for
the calculation of the quark-photon vertex are presented in both the time-like
and space-like regions of photon momentum squared, however emphasis is placed
on the space-like region relevant to electron scattering. The treatment
presented here simultaneously addresses the role of dynamically generated
vector bound states and the approach to asymptotic behavior. The
resulting description is therefore applicable over the entire range of momentum
transfers available in electron scattering experiments. Input parameters are
limited to the model gluon two-point function, which is chosen to reflect
confinement and asymptotic freedom, and are largely constrained by the obtained

Gathering experience in trust-based interactions
As advances in mobile and embedded technologies coupled with progress in adhoc networking fuel the shift towards ubiquitous computing systems it is becoming increasingly clear that security is a major concern. While this is true of all computing paradigms, the characteristics of ubiquitous systems amplify this concern by promoting spontaneous interaction between diverse heterogeneous entities across administrative boundaries [5]. Entities cannot therefore rely on a specific control authority and will have no global view of the state of the system. To facilitate collaboration with unfamiliar counterparts therefore requires that an entity takes a proactive approach to self-protection. We conjecture that trust management is the best way to provide support for such self-protection measures
Maternal glucose and fatty acid kinetics and infant birth weight in obese women with type 2 diabetes
The objectives of this study were 1) to describe maternal glucose and lipid kinetics and 2) to examine the relationships with infant birth weight in obese women with pregestational type 2 diabetes during late pregnancy. Using stable isotope tracer methodology and mass spectrometry, maternal glucose and lipid kinetic rates during the basal condition were compared in three groups: lean women without diabetes (Lean, n = 25), obese women without diabetes (OB, n = 26), and obese women with pregestational type 2 diabetes (OB+DM, n = 28; total n = 79). Glucose and lipid kinetics during hyperinsulinemia were also measured in a subset of participants (n = 56). Relationships between maternal glucose and lipid kinetics during both conditions and infant birth weight were examined. Maternal endogenous glucose production (EGP) rate was higher in OB+DM than OB and Lean during hyperinsulinemia. Maternal insulin value at 50% palmitate R(a) suppression (IC50) for palmitate suppression with insulinemia was higher in OB+DM than OB and Lean. Maternal EGP per unit insulin and plasma free fatty acid concentration during hyperinsulinemia most strongly predicted infant birth weight. Our findings suggest maternal fatty acid and glucose kinetics are altered during late pregnancy and might suggest a mechanism for higher birth weight in obese women with pregestational diabetes
Suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers using a linearly chirped diode laser
The output of high power fiber amplifiers is typically limited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). An analysis of SBS with a chirped pump laser indicates that a chirp of 2.5 × 10^(15) Hz/s could raise, by an order
of magnitude, the SBS threshold of a 20-m fiber. A diode laser with a constant output power and a linear chirp of 5 × 10^(15) Hz/s has been previously demonstrated. In a low-power proof-of-concept experiment, the threshold for SBS in a 6-km fiber is increased by a factor of 100 with a
chirp of 5 × 10^(14) Hz/s. A linear chirp will enable straightforward coherent combination of multiple fiber amplifiers, with electronic compensation of path length differences on the order of 0.2 m
Can a Logarithmically Running Coupling Mimic a String Tension?
It is shown that a Coulomb potential using a running coupling slightly
modified from the perturbative form can produce an interquark potential that
appears nearly linear over a large distance range. Recent high-statistics SU(2)
lattice gauge theory data fit well to this potential without the need for a
linear string-tension term. This calls into question the accuracy of string
tension measurements which are based on the assumption of a constant
coefficient for the Coulomb term. It also opens up the possibility of obtaining
