    We investigate the empirical linkages between sales uncertainty and firms´ inventory investment behavior while controlling for firms´ financial strength. Using large panels of manufacturing firms from several European countries we find that higher sales uncertainty leads to larger stocks of inventories. We also identify an indirect effect of sales uncertainty on inventory accumulation through the financial strength of firms. Our results provide evidence that financial strength mitigates the adverse effects of uncertainty

The model, which predicts asymmetry in the tracking data, is dependent on target maneuvers and trajectories. Gunners perception, decision making, control, and estimate of target positions and velocity related to crossover intervals are discussed. The model provides estimates for means, standard deviations, and variances for variables investigated and for operator estimates of future target positions and velocities

    An optimal control model approach to the design of compensators for simulator delay

    The effects of display delay on pilot performance and workload and of the design of the filters to ameliorate these effects were investigated. The optimal control model for pilot/vehicle analysis was used both to determine the potential delay effects and to design the compensators. The model was applied to a simple roll tracking task and to a complex hover task. The results confirm that even small delays can degrade performance and impose a workload penalty. A time-domain compensator designed by using the optimal control model directly appears capable of providing extensive compensation for these effects even in multi-input, multi-output problems

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Metallic split ring resonator (SRR) structures are used in nanophotonics applications in order to localize and enhance incident electromagnetic field. Electrically controllable sheet carrier concentration of graphene provides a platform where the resonance of the SRRs fabricated on graphene can be tuned. The reflectivity spectra of SRR arrays shift by applying gate voltage, which modulates the sheet carrier concentration, and thereby the optical conductivity of monolayer graphene. We experimentally and numerically demonstrated that the tuning range can be increased by tailoring the effective mode area of the SRR and enhancing the interaction with graphene. The tuning capability is one of the important features of graphene based tunable sensors, optical switches, and modulator applications. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    An algorithm for the weighting matrices in the sampled-data optimal linear regulator problem

    The sampled-data optimal linear regulator problem provides a means whereby a control designer can use an understanding of continuous optimal regulator design to produce a digital state variable feedback control law which satisfies continuous system performance specifications. A basic difficulty in applying the sampled-data regulator theory is the requirement that certain digital performance index weighting matrices, expressed as complicated functions of system matrices, be computed. Infinite series representations are presented for the weighting matrices of the time-invariant version of the optimal linear sampled-data regulator problem. Error bounds are given for estimating the effect of truncating the series expressions after a finite number of terms, and a method is described for their computer implementation. A numerical example is given to illustrate the results

In contrast to the various nonsymmetric one-way diffraction gratings that have recently been proposed, the possibility of obtaining of narrow beams is demonstrated. Strong directional selectivity can appear a wide range of the observation angles, while the angle of incidence is retained. © 2010 Optical Society of Americ

    Observation of Enhanced Beaming from Photonic Crystal Waveguides

    We report on the experimental observation of the beaming effect in photonic crystals enhanced via surface modes. We experimentally map the spatial field distribution of energy emitted from a subwavelength photonic crystal waveguide into free-space, rendering with crisp clarity the diffractionless beaming of energy. Our experimental data agree well with our numerical studies of the beaming enhancement in photonic crystals with modulated surfaces. Without loss of generality, we study the beaming effect in a photonic crystal scaled to microwave frequencies and demonstrate the technological capacity to deliver long-range, wavelength-scaled beaming of energy.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Distinct functions for anterograde and retrograde sorting of SORLA in amyloidogenic processes in the brain

    SORLA is a neuronal sorting receptor implicated both in sporadic and familial forms of AD. SORLA reduces the amyloidogenic burden by two mechanisms, either by rerouting internalized APP molecules from endosomes to the trans-Golgi network (TGN) to prevent proteolytic processing or by directing newly produced Aβ to lysosomes for catabolism. Studies in cell lines suggested that the interaction of SORLA with cytosolic adaptors retromer and GGA is required for receptor sorting to and from the TGN. However, the relevance of anterograde or retrograde trafficking for SORLA activity in vivo remained largely unexplored. Here, we generated mouse models expressing SORLA variants lacking binding sites for GGA or retromer to query this concept in the brain. Disruption of retromer binding resulted in a retrograde-sorting defect with accumulation of SORLA in endosomes and depletion from the TGN, and in an overall enhanced APP processing. In contrast, disruption of the GGA interaction did not impact APP processing but caused increased brain Aβ levels, a mechanism attributed to a defect in anterograde lysosomal targeting of Aβ. Our findings substantiated the significance of adaptor-mediated sorting for SORLA activities in vivo, and they uncovered that anterograde and retrograde sorting paths may serve discrete receptor functions in amyloidogenic processes
