Minimal-time bioremediation of natural water resources

We study minimal time strategies for the treatment of pollution of large volumes, such as lakes or natural reservoirs, with the help of an autonomous bioreactor. The control consists in feeding the bioreactor from the resource, the clean output returning to the resource with the same flow rate. We first characterize the optimal policies among constant and feedback controls, under the assumption of a uniform concentration in the resource. In a second part, we study the influence of an inhomogeneity in the resource, considering two measurements points. With the help of the Maximum Principle, we show that the optimal control law is non-monotonic and terminates with a constant phase, contrary to the homogeneous case for which the optimal flow rate is decreasing with time. This study allows the decision makers to identify situations for which the benefit of using non-constant flow rates is significant

Viable harvest of monotone bioeconomic models

International audienceSome monospecies age class models, as well as specific multi-species models (with so-called technical interactions), exhibit useful monotonicity properties. This paper deals with discrete time monotone bioeconomics dynamics in the presence of state and control constraints. In practice, these latter ``acceptable configurations'' represent production and preservation requirements to be satisfied for all time, and they also possess monotonicity properties. A state \state is said to belong to the viability kernel if there exists a trajectory, of states and controls, starting from \state and satisfying the constraints. Under monotonicity assumptions, we present upper and lower estimates of the viability kernel. This helps delineating domains where a viable management is possible. Numerical examples, in the context of fisheries management, for the Chilean sea bass (\emph{Dissostichus eleginoides}) and Alfonsino (\emph{Beryx splendens}) are given

    Hormonal regulation of female reproduction

Reproduction is an event that requires the coordination of peripheral organs with the nervous system to ensure that the internal and external environments are optimal for successful procreation of the species. This is accomplished by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis that coordinates reproductive behavior with ovulation. The primary signal from the central nervous system is gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which modulates the activity of anterior pituitary gonadotropes regulating follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) release. As ovarian follicles develop they release estradiol, which negatively regulates further release of GnRH and FSH. As estradiol concentrations peak they trigger the surge release of GnRH, which leads to LH release inducing ovulation. Release of GnRH within the central nervous system helps modulate reproductive behaviors providing a node at which control of reproduction is regulated. To address these issues, this review focuses on several critical questions. How is the HPG axis regulated in species with different reproductive strategies? What internal and external conditions modulate the synthesis and release of GnRH? How does GnRH modulate reproductive behavior within the hypothalamus? How does disease shift the activity of the HPG axis.Fil: Christensen, A.. University of California at Los Angeles; Estados UnidosFil: Bentley, G. E.. Introduction: intracranial hypertension is a serious, life-threatening condition that can occur in patients with cerebrovascular disease. Its diagnosis is made by catheterization of the ventricular system or by non-invasive techniques such as ultrasound of the optic nerve sheath. Objective: to assess the usefulness of ultrasound of the optic nerve sheath for the diagnosis of intracranial hypertension in patients treated with cerebrovascular disease.Method: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research in 35 patients admitted for cerebrovascular disease in the Internal Medicine and Intensive Medicine services of the “Mártires del 9 de Abril” University Hospital. Ultrasound of the optic nerve sheath, fundus and computerized axial tomography of the skull were performed to diagnose signs of intracranial hypertension. Ultrasound of the optic nerve sheath showed a specificity of 80% and a positive predictive value of 87% for the detection of intracranial hypertension. Results: A predominance of males was reported (71,43 %), and of patients with white skin color (82,86 %). The mean age was 74,5 years, while the mean stay of the patients was 9,7 days. Hypertension was shown as the main personal pathological history (79,99 %) and was associated with the occurrence of cerebrovascular disease (p <0,01). Mortality from this entity was 60 %Conclusions: the measurement of the diameter of the optic nerve sheath by ultrasound in patients with a diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease is useful to evaluate the presence of intracranial hypertension.Introducción: la hipertensión intracraneana es una condición grave con riesgo vital que puede presentarse en pacientes con enfermedad cerebrovascular. Tools for improving feeding strategies in a SBR with several species

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper analyzes feeding strategies in a sequential batch reactor (SBR) with the objective of reaching a given (low) substrate level as quickly as possible for a given volume of water. Inside the SBR, several species compete for a single substrate, which leads to a minimal time control problem in which the control variable is the feeding rate. Following [10], we allow the control variable to be a bounded measurable function of time combined with possible impulses associated with instantaneous dilutions. For this problem, the ex-tremal trajectories of the singular arc type are characterized as the strategies used to maintain the substrate at a constant level. Because this optimization problem is difficult to solve, this characterization provides a valuable tool for investigating the optimality of various feeding strategies. Our aim is thus to illustrate the use of this tool by proposing potential optimal feeding strate-gies, which may then be compared with other more intuitive strategies. This aim was accomplished via several numerical experiments in which two specific strategies are compared
