Computation of Electrostatic Field near Three-Dimensional Corners and Edges

Theoretically, the electric field becomes infinite at corners of two and three dimensions and edges of three dimensions. Conventional finite-element and boundary element methods do not yield satisfactory results at close proximity to these singular locations. In this paper, we describe the application of a fast and accurate BEM solver (which usesexact analytic expressions to compute the effect of source distributions on flatsurfaces) to compute the electric field near three-dimensional corners and edges. Results have been obtained for distances as close as 1μm\mu m near the corner/edge and good agreement has been observed between the present results and existing analytical solutions.Comment: Presented in International Conference on Computational and Experimental Engineering and Sciences held at IIT Madras, Chennai, India, during 1-6 December, 200

Origin of the Exclusive Ternary Electroluminescent Behavior of BN‐Doped Nanographenes in Efficient Single‐Component White Light‐Emitting Electrochemical Cells

White-light-emitting electrochemical cells (WLECs) still represent a significant milestone, since only a few examples with moderate performances have been reported. Particularly, multiemissive white emitters are highly desired, as a paradigm to circumvent phase separation and voltage-dependent emission color issues that are encountered following host:guest and multilayered approaches. Herein, the origin of the exclusive white ternary electroluminescent behavior of BN-doped nanographenes with a B3N3 doping pattern (hexa-perihexabenzoborazinocoronene) is rationalized, leading to one of the most efficient (approximate to 3 cd A(-1)) and stable-over-days single-component and single-layered WLECs. To date, BN-doped nanographenes have featured blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). This doping pattern provides, however, white electroluminescence spanning the whole visible range (x/y CIE coordinates of 0.29-31/0.31-38 and average color rendering index (CRI) of 87) through a ternary emission involving fluorescence and thermally activated dual phosphorescence. This temperature-dependent multiemissive mechanism is operative for both photo- and electroluminescence processes and holds over the device lifespan, regardless of the device architecture, active layer composition, and operating conditions. As such, this work represents a new stepping-stone toward designing a new family of multiemissive white emitters based on BN-doped nanographenes that realizes one of the best-performing single-component white-emitting devices compared to the prior-art

Fluorene-based rib waveguides with optimized geometry for long-term amplified spontaneous emission stability

Amongst the different optoelectronic applications of conjugated polymers, waveguide amplifiers and optically pumped lasers are those requiring larger photochemical stability, owing to the large irradiation conditions under operation. In this context, suitable waveguide optimization enabling the reduction of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold values appears as important as synthetic chemistry protocols to promote polymer robustness against photo-oxidation. In this work, we develop rib waveguides with different geometries based on four different fluorene-based compounds and assess the influence of rib confinement on ASE properties. We observe ASE threshold values as low as 8.9 × 10-4 mJ cm-2, being among the lowest threshold values reported so far on blue emitting polymer/oligomer waveguides. We demonstrate that the enhanced ASE efficiency on some of these rib waveguides leads to a fivefold increase in operation lifetime respect to spin-coated slab waveguides, thus confirming the impact of waveguide geometry on ASE operation stability

Due to the pandemic, Peruvians have experienced a surge in mental health problems in recent years; a situation which is reflected in their healthcare system's capacity to bring about attention to it´s patients. Due to this problem, the district of Trujillo has begun working on a new prototype referred to as Community Mental Health Centers; however, due to these centers being improvised, they lack the required infrastructure to provide the necessary attention to patients. Moreover, these centers lack internment services; redirecting them to the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo, saturating this other center in the process. This situation led to the conducting of a situational diagnostic to the mental health centers in the district; including the Frida Alayza Cossio center located in La Rinconada, the focus of this thesis; in order to better understand the deficiencies which this center exhibits, some of them being unfit environments according to MINSA, a lack of equipment and a deficit of green areas. After gathering the required data and analyzing the results, the conclusion was reached that the district of Trujillo requires an I-4 Category Mental Health Center with internment capacity and architectural standards in line with those set by MINSA and adequate theoretical criteria for the rehabilitation of patients. This is why this thesis project proposes a Community Mental Health Center with internment which possesses an optimal architectural design as well as an effective integration with the surrounding urban context by incorporating aspects of nature to create comfortable spaces. Even more so, the criteria of color theory will be taken into account to achieve pleasant sensations for these types of patients.Tesi

Airborne particulate matter PM2.5 from Mexico City affects the generation of reactive oxygen species by blood neutrophils from asthmatics: an in vitro approach

Abstract

Background

The Mexico City Metropolitan Area is densely populated, and toxic air pollutants are generated and concentrated at a higher rate because of its geographic characteristics. It is well known that exposure to particulate matter, especially to fine and ultra-fine particles, enhances the risk of cardio-respiratory diseases, especially in populations susceptible to oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fine particles on the respiratory burst of circulating neutrophils from asthmatic patients living in Mexico City.

Methods

In total, 6 subjects diagnosed with mild asthma and 11 healthy volunteers were asked to participate. Neutrophils were isolated from peripheral venous blood and incubated with fine particles, and the generation of reactive oxygen species was recorded by chemiluminescence. We also measured plasma lipoperoxidation susceptibility and plasma myeloperoxidase and paraoxonase activities by spectrophotometry.

Results

Asthmatic patients showed significantly lower plasma paraoxonase activity, higher susceptibility to plasma lipoperoxidation and an increase in myeloperoxidase activity that differed significantly from the control group. In the presence of fine particles, neutrophils from asthmatic patients showed an increased tendency to generate reactive oxygen species after stimulation with fine particles (PM2.5).

Conclusion

These findings suggest that asthmatic patients have higher oxidation of plasmatic lipids due to reduced antioxidant defense. Furthermore, fine particles tended to increase the respiratory burst of blood human neutrophils from the asthmatic group.

On the whole, increased myeloperoxidase activity and susceptibility to lipoperoxidation with a concomitant decrease in paraoxonase activity in asthmatic patients could favor lung infection and hence disrupt the control of asthmatic crises.</p
