    Vanishing of cosmological constant in nonfactorizable geometry

    We generalize the results of Randall and Sundrum to a wider class of four-dimensional space-times including the four-dimensional Schwarzschild background and de Sitter universe. We solve the equation for graviton propagation in a general four dimensional background and find an explicit solution for a zero mass bound state of the graviton. We find that this zero mass bound state is normalizable only if the cosmological constant is strictly zero, thereby providing a dynamical reason for the vanishing of cosmological constant within the context of this model. We also show that the results of Randall and Sundrum can be generalized without any modification to the Schwarzschild background.Comment: 8 Pages(expanded version), Accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Inhibition of a yeast LTR retrotransposon by human APOBEC3 cytidine deaminases

    The mammalian APOBEC3 family of cytidine deaminases includes several members that possess potent antiretroviral activity. Human APOBEC3F and APOBEC3G are specifically incorporated into human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) progeny virions in the absence of virion infectivity factor (Vif), where they deaminate deoxycytidine to deoxyuridine on the minus strand of nascent reverse transcripts. Editing of the HIV-1 cDNA leads to its degradation or to G to A hypermutation of the integrated provirus [1-8]. Here, we show that APOBEC3 proteins also restrict the activity of a distantly related long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon. When expressed in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, human APOBEC3C, APOBEC3F, or APOBEC3G or mouse APOBEC3 potently inhibit replication of the Ty1 LTR retrotransposon. APOBEC3G interacts with Ty1 Gag and is packaged into Ty1 virus-like particles (VLPs) by a mechanism that closely resembles the one it uses to enter HIV-1 virions. Expression of APOBEC3G results in a reduced level of Ty1 cDNA integration and G to A editing of integrated Ty1 cDNA. Our findings indicate that APOBEC3G restricts Ty1 and HIV-1 by similar mechanisms and suggest that the APOBEC3 proteins target a substantially broader spectrum of retroelements than previously appreciated

    Comparative Effectiveness of Treatments for Binge-Eating Disorder: Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

    Psychological and pharmacological interventions for binge-eating disorder have previously demonstrated efficacy (compared with placebo or waitlist control); thus, we aimed to expand that literature with a review of comparative effectiveness. We searched MEDLINE,Âź EMBASE,Âź Cochrane Library, Academic OneFile, CINAHLÂź for binge-eating disorder treatment articles and selected studies using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were sufficient for network meta-analysis comparing two pharmacological interventions; psychological interventions were analysed qualitatively. In all, 28 treatment comparisons were included in this review: one pharmacological comparison (second-generation antidepressants versus lisdexamfetamine) and 26 psychological comparisons. Only three statistically significant differences emerged: lisdexamfetamine was better at increasing binge abstinence than second-generation antidepressants; therapist-led cognitive behavioural therapy was better at reducing binge-eating frequency than behavioural weight loss, but behavioural weight loss was better at reducing weight. The majority of other treatment comparisons revealed few significant differences between groups. Thus, patients and clinicians can choose from several effective treatment options

    Microscopic Structure of High-Spin Vibrational Excitations in Superdeformed 190,192,194Hg

    Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the quadrupole and octupole correlations for excited superdeformed bands in 190Hg, 192Hg, and 194Hg. The K=2 octupole vibrations are predicted to be the lowest excitation modes at zero rotational frequency. At finite frequency, however, the interplay between rotation and vibrations produces different effects depending on neutron number: The lowest octupole phonon is rotationally aligned in 190Hg, is crossed by the aligned two-quasiparticle bands in 192Hg, and retains the K=2 octupole vibrational character up to the highest frequency in 194Hg. The gamma vibrations are predicted to be higher in energy and less collective than the octupole vibrations. From a comparison with the experimental dynamic moments of inertia, a new interpretation of the observed excited bands invoking the K=2 octupole vibrations is proposed, which suggests those octupole vibrations may be prevalent in SD Hg nuclei.Comment: 22 pages, REVTeX, 12 postscript figures are available on reques

    Superdeformed rotational bands in the Mercury region; A Cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov study

    A study of rotational properties of the ground superdeformed bands in \Hg{0}, \Hg{2}, \Hg{4}, and \Pb{4} is presented. We use the cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with the {\skm} parametrization of the Skyrme force in the particle-hole channel and a seniority interaction in the pairing channel. An approximate particle number projection is performed by means of the Lipkin-Nogami prescription.     Kaluza-Klein gravitino production with a single photon at e^+ e^- colliders

    In a supersymmetric large extra dimension scenario, the production of Kaluza-Klein gravitinos accompanied by a photino at e^+ e^- colliders is studied. We assume that a bulk supersymmetry is softly broken on our brane such that the low-energy theory resembles the MSSM. Low energy supersymmetry breaking is further assumed as in GMSB, leading to sub-eV mass shift in each KK mode of the gravitino from the corresponding graviton KK mode. Since the photino decays within a detector due to its sufficiently large inclusive decay rate into a photon and a gravitino, the process e^+ e^- -> photino + gravitino yields single photon events with missing energy. Even if the total cross section can be substantial at sqrt(s)=500 GeV, the KK graviton background of e^+ e^- -> photon + graviton is kinematically advantageous and thus much larger. It is shown that the observable, sigma(e^-_L)-sigma(e^-_R), can completely eliminate the KK graviton background but retain most of the KK gravitino signal, which provides a unique and robust method to probe the supersymmetric bulk.Comment: Reference added and typos correcte
