Familon Model of Dark Matter
If the next fundamental level of matter occurs (preons) then dark matter must
consist of familons containing a "hot" component from massless particles and a
"cold" component from massive particles. During evolution of the Universe this
dark matter was undergone to late-time relativistic phase transitions
temperatures of which were different. Fluctuations created by these phase
transitions have had a fractal character. In the result the structurization of
dark matter (and therefore the baryon subsystem) has taken place and in the
Universe some characteristic scales which have printed this phenomenon arise
naturally. Familons are collective excitations of nonperturbative preon
condensates which could be produced during more early relativistic phase
transition. For structurization of dark matter (and baryon component) three
generations of particles are necessary. The first generation of particles has
produced the observed baryon world. The second and third generations have
produced dark matter from particles which have appeared when symmetry among
generations was spontaneously broken.Comment: 12 page
Interventions to prevent spontaneous preterm birth in high-risk women with singleton pregnancy: A systematic review and network meta-analysis
© 2019 The Cochrane Collaboration. This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: To compare the efficacy of current, relevant interventions to prevent preterm birth in women with singleton pregnancy and high individual risk of spontaneous preterm birth. We will consider interventions for women with a history of spontaneous preterm birth or short cervical length and women with asymptomatic vaginal infections
Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration
Plasma wakefield acceleration, either laser driven or electron-bunch driven,
has been demonstrated to hold great potential. However, it is not obvious how
to scale these approaches to bring particles up to the TeV regime. In this
paper, we discuss the possibility of proton-bunch driven plasma wakefield
acceleration, and show that high energy electron beams could potentially be
produced in a single accelerating stage.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
The relationship between cadence, pedalling technique and gross efficiency in cycling
Technique and energy saving are two variables often considered as important for performance in cycling and related to each other. Theoretically, excellent pedalling technique should give high gross efficiency (GE). The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between pedalling technique and GE. 10 well-trained cyclists were measured for GE, force effectiveness (FE) and dead centre size (DC) at a work rate corresponding to ~75% of VO2max during level and inclined cycling, seat adjusted forward and backward, at three different cadences around their own freely chosen cadence (FCC) on an ergometer. Within subjects, FE, DC and GE decreased as cadence increased (p < 0.001). A strong relationship between FE and GE was found, which was to great extent explained by FCC. The relationship between cadence and both FE and GE, within and between subjects, was very similar, irrespective of FCC. There was no difference between level and inclined cycling position. The seat adjustments did not affect FE, DC and GE or the relationship between them. Energy expenditure is strongly coupled to cadence, but force effectiveness, as a measure for pedalling technique, is not likely the cause of this relationship. FE, DC and GE are not affected by body orientation or seat adjustments, indicating that these parameters and the relationship between them are robust to coordinative challenges within a range of cadence, body orientation and seat position that is used in regular cycling
Primordial Black Holes: sirens of the early Universe
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are, typically light, black holes which can
form in the early Universe. There are a number of formation mechanisms,
including the collapse of large density perturbations, cosmic string loops and
bubble collisions. The number of PBHs formed is tightly constrained by the
consequences of their evaporation and their lensing and dynamical effects.
Therefore PBHs are a powerful probe of the physics of the early Universe, in
particular models of inflation. They are also a potential cold dark matter
candidate.Comment: 21 pages. To be published in "Quantum Aspects of Black Holes", ed. X.

The Cosmological Constant
This is a review of the physics and cosmology of the cosmological constant.
Focusing on recent developments, I present a pedagogical overview of cosmology
in the presence of a cosmological constant, observational constraints on its
magnitude, and the physics of a small (and potentially nonzero) vacuum energy.Comment: 50 pages. Submitted to Living Reviews in Relativity

Postnatal depression in Southern Brazil: prevalence and its demographic and socioeconomic determinants

Abstract

Background

Studies investigating the prevalence of postnatal depression (PND) show rates ranging from 5% to 36.7%. The investigation of age, race, educational levels, religion and income as risk factors for PND has yielded conflicting results. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of PND in women residing in Southern Brazil and the associated risk factors.

Methods

This is population-based cross-sectional study of women residing in Porto Alegre who delivered in June 2001. A sample of 271 participants were selected from the Record of Living Newborn Infants of the State Health Department (the official Brazilian database and stores the name and address of all women who give birth to living newborn infants) using a process based on pseudo-random numbers which choose a random sample from 2.000 records. Once the addresses were identified, the women were visited at their place of residence (home, hotel, boarding house and prison), with the interviews taking place between the 6th and the 8th week after delivery.

The association between the risk factors and PND was investigated through bivariate analysis using Pearson's chi-square test. Student's t-test was used to analyze the continuous variables. To identify independent risk factors, multivariate analysis was performed using hierarchical levels with a predefined model that took into account the time relationship between PND and the risk factors. Cox's regression was used to calculate the prevalence ratios.

Results

The PND prevalence rate found was 20.7% (CI 95% 15.7 – 25.7). After adjusting for confounding variables, per capita income was found to have a significant association with PND.

Conclusion

The prevalence of PND is higher than the figures found in most developed countries and similar to the figures found in developing countries. Differences in PND by regions or countries can be partially explained by the effect of income on the mediation of risk factors. In low income populations, women should be routinely evaluated for postnatal depression, and those with no partner or spouse are likely to require further care from health services and should be given the benefit of mental health prevention programs.</p

A review of elliptical and disc galaxy structure, and modern scaling laws
A century ago, in 1911 and 1913, Plummer and then Reynolds introduced their
models to describe the radial distribution of stars in `nebulae'. This article
reviews the progress since then, providing both an historical perspective and a
contemporary review of the stellar structure of bulges, discs and elliptical
galaxies. The quantification of galaxy nuclei, such as central mass deficits
and excess nuclear light, plus the structure of dark matter halos and cD galaxy
envelopes, are discussed. Issues pertaining to spiral galaxies including dust,
bulge-to-disc ratios, bulgeless galaxies, bars and the identification of
pseudobulges are also reviewed. An array of modern scaling relations involving
sizes, luminosities, surface brightnesses and stellar concentrations are
presented, many of which are shown to be curved. These 'redshift zero'
relations not only quantify the behavior and nature of galaxies in the Universe
today, but are the modern benchmark for evolutionary studies of galaxies,
whether based on observations, N-body-simulations or semi-analytical modelling.
For example, it is shown that some of the recently discovered compact
elliptical galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 may be the bulges of modern disc galaxies.Comment: Condensed version (due to Contract) of an invited review article to
