First order signatures in 4D pure compact U(1) gauge theory with toroidal and spherical topologies
We study the pure compact U(1) gauge theory with the extended Wilson action
(\beta, \gamma couplings) by finite size scaling techniques, in lattices
ranging from L=6 to L=24 in the region of \gamma <= 0 with toroidal and
spherical topologies. The phase transition presents a double peak structure
which survives in the thermodynamical limit in the torus. In the sphere the
evidence support the idea of a weaker, but still first order, phase transition.
For negative values of gamma the transition becomes weaker and larger lattices
are needed to find its asymptotic behaviour. Along the transient region the
behaviour is the typical one of a weak first order transition for both
topologies, with a region where 1/d < nu < 0.5, which becomes nu compatible
with 1/d when larger lattices are used.Comment: Some references added; changes in the text mainly wording. To appear

Towards a new quantization of Dirac's monopole
There are several mathematical and physical reasons why Dirac's quantization
must hold. How far one can go without it remains an open problem. The present
work outlines a few steps in this direction.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of "IV Taller de la Division de Gravitacion

The U(1) phase transition on toroidal and spherical lattices
We have studied the properties of the phase transition in the U(1) compact
pure gauge model paying special atention to the influence of the topology of
the boundary conditions. From the behavior of the energy cumulants and the
observation of an effective \nu -> 1/d on toroidal and spherical lattices, we
conclude that the transition is first order.Comment: LATTICE98(gauge
Real-time simulation model of the HL-20 lifting body
A proposed manned spacecraft design, designated the HL-20, has been under investigation at Langley Research Center. Included in that investigation are flight control design and flying qualities studies utilizing a man-in-the-loop real-time simulator. This report documents the current real-time simulation model of the HL-20 lifting body vehicle, known as version 2.0, presently in use at NASA Langley Research Center. Included are data on vehicle aerodynamics, inertias, geometries, guidance and control laws, and cockpit displays and controllers. In addition, trim case and dynamic check case data is provided. The intent of this document is to provide the reader with sufficient information to develop and validate an equivalent simulation of the HL-20 for use in real-time or analytical studies
High frequency limit of the Transport Cross Section and boundedness of the Total Cross Section in scattering by an obstacle with impedance boundary conditions
The scalar scattering of the plane wave by a strictly convex obstacle with
impedance boundary conditions is considered. The uniform boundedness of the
Total Cross Section for all values of frequencies is proved. The high frequency
limit of the Transport Cross Section is founded and presented as a classical
functional of the variational theory
A study of Schwinger-Dyson Equations for Yukawa and Wess-Zumino Models
We study Schwinger-Dyson equation for fermions in Yukawa and Wess-Zumino
models, in terms of dynamical mass generation and the wavefunction
renormalization function. In the Yukawa model with -type interaction
between scalars and fermions, we find a critical coupling in the quenched
approximation above which fermions acquire dynamical mass. This is shown to be
true beyond the bare 3-point vertex approximation. In the Wess-Zumino model,
there is a neat cancellation of terms leading to no dynamical mass for
fermions. We comment on the conditions under which these results are general
beyond the rainbow approximation and also on the ones under which supersymmetry
is preserved and the scalars as well do not acquire mass. The results are in
accordance with the non-renormalization theorem at least to order in
perturbation theory. In both the models, we also evaluate the wavefunction
renormalization function, analytically in the neighbourhood of the critical
coupling and numerically, away from it.Comment: 12 pages and 7 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in
