Sum Rules from an Extra Dimension
Using the gravity side of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we investigate the
analytic properties of thermal retarded Green's functions for scalars,
conserved currents, the stress tensor, and massless fermions. We provide some
results concerning their large and small frequency behavior and their pole
structure. From these results, it is straightforward to prove the validity of
various sum rules on the field theory side of the duality. We introduce a novel
contraction mapping we use to study the large frequency behavior of the Green's
functions.Comment: v2: 23 pages (plus appendix), revised presentation, discussion of

Viscosity Bound and Causality in Superfluid Plasma
It was argued by Brigante et.al that the lower bound on the ratio of the
shear viscosity to the entropy density in strongly coupled plasma is translated
into microcausality violation in the dual gravitational description. Since
transport properties of the system characterize its infrared dynamics, while
the causality of the theory is determined by its ultraviolet behavior, the
viscosity bound/microcausality link should not be applicable to theories that
undergo low temperature phase transitions. We present an explicit model of
AdS/CFT correspondence that confirms this fact.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures. References added, typos fixe
(Anti-)Brane backreaction beyond perturbation theory
We improve on the understanding of the backreaction of anti-D6-branes in a
flux background that is mutually BPS with D6-branes. This setup is analogous to
the study of the backreaction of anti-D3-branes inserted in the KS throat, but
does not require us to smear the anti-branes or do a perturbative analysis
around the BPS background. We solve the full equations of motion near the
anti-D6-branes and show that only two boundary conditions are consistent with
the equations of motion. Upon invoking a topological argument we eliminate the
boundary condition with regular H flux since it cannot lead to a solution that
approaches the right kind of flux away from the anti-D6-brane. This leaves us
with a boundary condition which has singular, but integrable, H flux energy
density.Comment: 12 pages + appendices, 1 figure; v2: minor changes, version published

Towards strange metallic holography
We initiate a holographic model building approach to `strange metallic'
phenomenology. Our model couples a neutral Lifshitz-invariant quantum critical
theory, dual to a bulk gravitational background, to a finite density of gapped
probe charge carriers, dually described by D-branes. In the physical regime of
temperature much lower than the charge density and gap, we exhibit anomalous
scalings of the temperature and frequency dependent conductivity. Choosing the
dynamical critical exponent appropriately we can match the non-Fermi liquid
scalings, such as linear resistivity, observed in strange metal regimes. As
part of our investigation we outline three distinct string theory realizations
of Lifshitz geometries: from F theory, from polarised branes, and from a
gravitating charged Fermi gas. We also identify general features of
renormalisation group flow in Lifshitz theories, such as the appearance of
relevant charge-charge interactions when . We outline a program to
extend this model building approach to other anomalous observables of interest
such as the Hall conductivity.Comment: 71 pages, 8 figure
On Charged Lifshitz Black Holes
We obtain exact solutions of charged asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in
arbitrary (d+2) dimensions, generalizing the four dimensional solution
investigated in 0908.2611[hep-th]. We find that both the conventional
Hamiltonian approach and the recently proposed method for defining mass in
non-relativistic backgrounds do not work for this specific example. Thus the
mass of the black hole can only be determined by the first law of
thermodynamics. We also obtain perturbative solutions in five-dimensional
Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density and the
DC conductivity are calculated in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet corrections.Comment: 24 pages, no figures, to appear in JHE
M-Branes and Metastable States
We study a supersymmetry breaking deformation of the M-theory background
found in arXiv:hep-th/0012011. The supersymmetric solution is a warped product
of R^{2,1} and the 8-dimensional Stenzel space, which is a higher dimensional
generalization of the deformed conifold. At the bottom of the warped throat
there is a 4-sphere threaded by \tilde{M} units of 4-form flux. The dual
(2+1)-dimensional theory has a discrete spectrum of bound states. We add p
anti-M2 branes at a point on the 4-sphere, and show that they blow up into an
M5-brane wrapping a 3-sphere at a fixed azimuthal angle on the 4-sphere. This
supersymmetry breaking state turns out to be metastable for p / \tilde{M} <
0.054. We find a smooth O(3)-symmetric Euclidean bounce solution in the
M5-brane world volume theory that describes the decay of the false vacuum.
Calculation of the Euclidean action shows that the metastable state is
extremely long-lived. We also describe the corresponding metastable states and
their decay in the type IIA background obtained by reduction along one of the
spatial directions of R^{2,1}.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures; v2 note adde
Quasinormal modes of massive charged flavor branes
We present an analysis and classification of vector and scalar fluctuations
in a D3/D7 brane setup at finite termperature and baryon density. The system is
dual to an N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(N_c) gauge group and
N_f hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation in the quenched
approximation. We improve significantly over previous results on the
quasinormal mode spectrum of D7 branes and stress their novel physical
interpretation. Amongst our findings is a new purely imaginary scalar mode that
becomes tachyonic at sufficiently low temperature and baryon density. We
establish the existence of a critical density above which the scalar mode stays
in the stable regime for all temperatures. In the vector sector we study the
crossover from the hydrodynamic to the quasiparticle regime and find that it
moves to shorter wavelengths for lower temperatures. At zero baryon density the
quasinormal modes move toward distinct discrete attractor frequencies that
depend on the momentum as we increase the temperature. At finite baryon
density, however, the trajectories show a turning behavior such that for low
temperature the quasinormal mode spectrum approaches the spectrum of the
supersymmetric zero temperature normal modes. We interpret this as resolution
of the singular quasinormal mode spectrum that appears at the limiting D7 brane
embedding at vanishing baryon density.Comment: 56 pages, 40 figure
Nonlinear Hydrodynamics from Flow of Retarded Green's Function
We study the radial flow of retarded Green's function of energy-momentum
tensor and -current of dual gauge theory in presence of generic higher
derivative terms in bulk Lagrangian. These are first order non-linear Riccati
equations. We solve these flow equations analytically and obtain second order
transport coefficients of boundary plasma. This way of computing transport
coefficients has an advantage over usual Kubo approach. The non-linear equation
turns out to be a linear first order equation when we study the Green's
function perturbatively in momentum. We consider several examples including
term and generic four derivative terms in bulk. We also study the flow
equations for -charged black holes and obtain exact expressions for second
order transport coefficients for dual plasma in presence of arbitrary chemical
potentials. Finally we obtain higher derivative corrections to second order
transport coefficients of boundary theory dual to five dimensional gauge
supergravity.Comment: Version 2, reference added, typos correcte
Abelian-Higgs and Vortices from ABJM: towards a string realization of AdS/CMT
We present ans\"{a}tze that reduce the mass-deformed ABJM model to gauged
Abelian scalar theories, using the fuzzy sphere matrices . One such
reduction gives a Toda system, for which we find a new type of nonabelian
vortex. Another gives the standard Abelian-Higgs model, thereby allowing us to
embed all the usual (multi-)vortex solutions of the latter into the ABJM model.
By turning off the mass deformation at the level of the reduced model, we can
also continuously deform to the massive theory in the massless ABJM
case. In this way we can embed the Landau-Ginzburg model into the AdS/CFT
correspondence as a consistent truncation of ABJM. In this context, the mass
deformation parameter and a field VEV act as and
respectively, leading to a well-motivated AdS/CMT construction from string
theory. To further this particular point, we propose a simple model for the
condensed matter field theory that leads to an approximate description for the
ABJM abelianization. Finally, we also find some BPS solutions to the
mass-deformed ABJM model with a spacetime interpretation as an M2-brane ending
on a spherical M5-brane.Comment: 43 pages, latex, explanations added in the introduction, end of

The psychological-type profile of clergywomen in ordained local ministry in the Church of England : pioneers or custodians?
This study employs psychological-type theory to compare the psychological profile of 144 clergywomen serving in ordained local ministry in the Church of England alongside the established profile of 237 professional mobile clergywomen serving in the Church of England published by Francis, Craig, Whinney, Tilley, and Slater. The data found no significant differences between these two groups of clergywomen in terms of orientations (introversion and extraversion) or in terms of the judging process (thinking and feeling). In terms of the perceiving process, there was a significantly higher proportion of sensing types among those serving in ordained local ministry (70% compared with 35%). In terms of the attitudes, there was a significantly higher proportion of judging types among those serving in ordained local ministry (83% compared with 65%). The combined sensing judging (SJ) temperament accounted for 65% of the clergywomen serving in ordained local ministry, compared with 29% of the clergywomen serving in professional mobile ministry in the earlier study. It is argued that the SJ temperament characterises a custodian style of ministry
