    Get PDF
In this paper, the intention is to analyse the capital structure features of the companies operating in the Portuguese Capital Market (PSI-20). A panel analysis allows the studying of relationships between debt level and those factors which financial literature considers as determining for capital structure: size, tangibility, growth opportunities, operational risk, non-debt tax shields, profit, dividend payout, and stock price performance. This empirical study purports to describe the effects of these variables on the companies' debt level.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Smart load cells: an industrial application

    Get PDF
This paper presents a data acquisition solution using a RISC type microcontroller with a very few components around, taking advantage of the ratiometric functioning of the load cells. The need of thermally stable circuits is minimized through the use of the same amplification chain for both signal and reference. The amplification and filtering are done trough switched-capacitor techniques controlled by the microcontroller. This option allows the choice of the proper scale according to the platform and permits the auto-calibration of the system. The weighing tests show errors below 100 gr in 400 kg for an industrial platform of 8 smart load cells. The paper also describes an example of software calibration of a multi-load cell weigh-bridge using one processor per smart load cell

    Get PDF

Usability evaluation of the uCat tool

The uCat tool supports use cases specification, aiming at the generation of architectural prototypes, as per the SCARP approach. This short paper reports on the evaluation of its usability, a major factor in tool adoption by potential users.

From requirements to UI prototypes: a semi-automated approach

    Get PDF
Software development poses multiple challenges, from requirements specification to final software production. We have developed two approaches, focused on complementary aspects of the problem. On the one hand, SCARP supports obtaining architectural models (hence, business layer code) from requirements models. On the other, MODUS produces UI prototypes from architectural models. This work presents their integration to obtain a development cycle going from requirements to executable prototypes, supported by semi-automated processes.

Acquisition the profile of surfaces with complementary sensor fusion techniques

    Get PDF
This paper presents complementary sensor fusion techniques for the acquisition of the profile of surfaces with minimum error using low cost sensors ultrasonic sensors. These surfaces are composed by areas with different depths, corners and specular surfaces. To minimize the constraints of sonar sensors, it was developed dedicated software and hardware, as well as an empirical model was obtained from real data. This model is based in two proposed concepts: Points of Constant Depth (PCD) and Areas of Constant Depth (ACD). Having this sonar model in mind, four sensor fusion techniques are used separately to validate the PCDs and decide the ACDs: average and variance, fuzzy controller and heuristic method based in rules. In this work a PUMA 560 manipulator was equipped with a CCD video camera on the shoulder and four ultrasonic sensors on the wrist, to acquire data to model the geometry of the part’s surface, exploiting the mobility of the robot. The CCD camera view defines the working area, while the ultrasonic sensors enable the acquisition of the surface profile. For the acquisition of the profile of surfaces with a minimum error different and complementary sensor fusion techniques are implemented and applied separately, namely the average and variance, kalman filter, fuzzy controller and heuristic method based in rules
