    Globular Cluster Formation in M82

    We present high resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR; 11.7 and 17.65 micron) maps of the central 400 pc region of the starburst galaxy M82. Seven star forming clusters are identified which together provide ~ 15% of the total mid-IR luminosity of the galaxy. Combining the mid-IR data with thermal radio measurements and near- and mid-IR line emission, we find that these young stellar clusters have inferred masses and sizes comparable to globular clusters.     It has been well established that Galactic Globular clusters (GCs) harbour more than one stellar population, distinguishable by the anti-correlations of light element abundances (C-N, Na-O, and Mg-Al). These studies have been extended recently to the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Here we investigate the AGB of NGC 6397 for the first time. We have performed an abundance analysis of high-resolution spectra of 47 RGB and 8 AGB stars, deriving Fe, Na, O, Mg and Al abundances. We find that NGC 6397 shows no evidence of a deficit in Na-rich AGB stars, as reported for some other GCs - the subpopulation ratios of the AGB and RGB in NGC 6397 are identical, within uncertainties. This agrees with expectations from stellar theory. This GC acts as a control for our earlier work on the AGB of M 4 (with contrasting results), since the same tools and methods were used.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 8 tables (2 online-only).     Condom-use Skills Checklist: A Proxy for Assessing Condom-use Knowledge and Skills When Direct Observation Is Not Possible

    Because of the continued importance of correct condom-use in controlling the HIV epidemic and the limited availability of tools for assessing correct condom-use, methods for assessing condom-application skills, especially when direct observation is not feasible, are needed. Accordingly, in the context of a high-risk population (The Bahamas) for HIV, a 17-item scale—the Condom-use Skills Checklist (CUSC)—was developed for use among young adolescents and adults. The rationale and approach to developing the scale and some measures of internal consistency, construct validity, and criterion-related validity have been described. It is concluded that the scale offers a reasonable alternative to direct observation among older subjects and that further development may make it more useful among pre-adolescents

    Particle displacements in the elastic deformation of amorphous materials: local fluctuations vs. non-affine field

    We study the local disorder in the deformation of amorphous materials by decomposing the particle displacements into a continuous, inhomogeneous field and the corresponding fluctuations. We compare these fields to the commonly used non-affine displacements in an elastically deformed 2D Lennard-Jones glass. Unlike the non-affine field, the fluctuations are very localized, and exhibit a much smaller (and system size independent) correlation length, on the order of a particle diameter, supporting the applicability of the notion of local "defects" to such materials. We propose a scalar "noise" field to characterize the fluctuations, as an additional field for extended continuum models, e.g., to describe the localized irreversible events observed during plastic deformation.Comment: Minor corrections to match the published versio

    Piezomagnetism and Stress Induced Paramagnetic Meissner Effect in Mechanically Loaded High-T_c Granular Superconductors

    Two novel phenomena in a weakly coupled granular superconductor under an applied stress are predicted which are based on recently suggested piezophase effect (a macroscopic quantum analog of the piezoelectric effect) in mechanically loaded grain boundary Josephson junctions. Namely, we consider the existence of stress induced paramagnetic moment in zero applied magnetic field (piezomagnetism) and its influence on a low-field magnetization (leading to a mechanically induced paramagnetic Meissner effect).     Using decision analysis: connecting "classroom" and "field"

    This paper reports on the findings of a small-scale research project investigating the views of social work students on the use of decision analysis. After giving the context of the research, the article reports on what was found when students, who had just completed a Decision Making and Risk module, were asked for their opinions on the component parts of decision analysis, its use as a practice tool and their attitudes to using it on placement. The research found that the respondents in general took a critical and supportive stance towards the use of decision analysis in social work and, with extra teaching and a positive approach from their practice assessor, would be happy to use decision analysis. When the same group of students completed a follow-up questionnaire on a placement recall day, half of them had thought about using decision analysis but only three had gone on to discuss this with their practice assessors. Some issues in relation to connecting 'classroom' and 'field' are identified and the paper concludes that a number of further steps would be necessary to realise the potential of decision analysis to help students be more systematic and analytical in their approach to decision makin

    Self-Reported Tobacco Use and Correlation with Umbilical Cord Blood Cotinine levels at Delivery among Appalachian Gravidas

    The detrimental effects of cigarette use during pregnancy are well documented. Studies have shown that cigarette smoking while pregnant is associated with multiple adverse outcomes including: pre-term birth, placental abruption, placenta previa, fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, increased rate of birth defects, and increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Cotinine is the primary metabolite of nicotine and allows for measurement of active as well as passive exposure. Cotinine freely cross the placental barrier and maternal concentrations are closely correlated with newborn plasma levels. The aim of this study was to compare maternally reported rates of tobacco use to fetal umbilical cord blood cotinine levels at the time of delivery. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 172 patients. Patients were asked a single yes or no question in regards to their cigarette use during pregnancy. Cord blood was collected at the time of delivery and analyzed for serum concentrations of cotinine. Cotinine levels greater than 3.0 ng/mL were considered consistent with the use of tobacco or tobacco cessation products. Maternal self-reporting of tobacco use indicates a reported tobacco use rate of 27.3% and an actual use rate of 30.2%. The reported tobacco non-use rate was 72.7% and the actual non-use rate was 66.3%. The prevalence of tobacco use during pregnancy in our study was 30.2%, while the overall rate in the United States is reported to be 12.3%. Our findings indicate that self-reported smoking prevalence and verified umbilical cord blood cotinine levels at the time of delivery have excellent correlation (kappa=0.76). Compared to the national average our study group also had nearly double the rate of tobacco use. Due to the deleterious effects of cigarette use during pregnancy continued efforts to educate patients regarding cigarette cessation is of utmost importance as cessation of tobacco products will improve and promote maternal and fetal well-being
