A model for vortex formation in magnetic nanodots
We use Monte Carlo simulation to study the vortex nucleation on magnetic
nanodots at low temperature. In our simulations, we have considered a simple
microscopic two-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model with term to describe
the anisotropy due to the presence of the nanodot edge. We have considered the
thickness of the edge, which was not considered in previous works, introducing
a term that controls the energy associated to the edge. Our results clearly
show that the thickness of the edge has a considerable influence in the vortex
nucleation on magnetic nanodots. We have obtained the hysteresis curve for
several values of the surface anisotropy and skin depth parameter (). The
results are in excellent agreement with experimental data
Properties of Very Luminous Galaxies
Recent analysis of the SSRS2 data based on cell-counts and two-point
correlation function has shown that very luminous galaxies are much more
strongly clustered than fainter galaxies. In fact, the amplitude of the
correlation function of very luminous galaxies () asymptotically
approaches that of clusters. In this paper we investigate the
properties of the most luminous galaxies, with blue absolute magnitude . We find that: 1) the population mix is comparable to that in other ranges
of absolute magnitudes; 2) only a small fraction are located in bona fide
clusters; 3) the bright galaxy-cluster cross-correlation function is
significantly higher on large scales than that measured for fainter galaxies;
4) the correlation length of galaxies brighter than \MB ,
expressed as a function of the mean interparticle distance, appears to follow
the universal dimensionless correlation function found for clusters and radio
galaxies; 5) a large fraction of the bright galaxies are in interacting pairs,
others show evidence for tidal distortions, while some appear to be surrounded
by faint satellite galaxies. We conclude that very luminous optical galaxies
differ from the normal population of galaxies both in the clustering and other
respects. We speculate that this population is highly biased tracers of mass,
being associated to dark halos with masses more comparable to clusters than

On the sensitivity of extrasolar mass-loss rate ranges: HD 209458b a case study
We present a 3D hydrodynamic study of the effects that different stellar wind
conditions and planetary wind structures have on the calculated Ly-
absorptions produced during the transit of HD 209458b. Considering a range of
stellar wind speeds [350-800] km s, coronal temperature
[3-7] K and two values of the polytropic index
[1.01-1.13], while keeping fixed the stellar mass loss rate, we found a
that a range between [3-5] g s give
account for the observational absorption in Ly- measured for the
planetary system. Also, several models with anisotropic evaporation profiles
for the planetary escaping atmosphere were carried out, showing that both, the
escape through polar regions and through the night side yields larger
absorptions than an isotropic planetary wind
Differential mesenteric fat deposition in bovines fed on silage or concentrate is independent of glycerol membrane permeability
© The Animal Consortium 2011In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.This study was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through grant PTDC/CVT/2006/66114 and individual fellowships to Ana P. Far Infrared Slab Lensing and Subwavelength Imaging in Crystal Quartz
We examine the possibility of using negative refraction stemming from the
phonon response in an anisotropic crystal to create a simple slab lens with
plane parallel sides, and show that imaging from such a lens should be possible
at room temperature despite the effects of absorption that are inevitably
present due to phonon damping. In particular, we consider the case of crystal
quartz, a system for which experimental measurements consistent with all-angle
negative refraction have already been demonstrated. Furthermore, we investigate
the possibility of subwavelength imaging from such materials, and show that it

Photo-ionization of planetary winds: case study HD209458b
Close-in hot Jupiters are exposed to a tremendous photon flux that ionizes
the neutral escaping material from the planet leaving an observable imprint
that makes them an interesting laboratory for testing theoretical models. In
this work we present 3D hydrodynamic simulations with radiation transfer
calculations of a close-in exoplanet in a blow-off state. We calculate the
Ly- absorption and compare it with observations of HD 209458b an
previous simplified model results.Our results show that the hydrodynamic
interaction together with a proper calculation of the photoionization proccess
are able to reproduce the main features of the observed Ly- absorption,
in particular at the blue-shifted wings of the line. We found that the ionizing
stellar flux produce an almost linear effect on the amount of absorption in the
wake. Varying the planetary mass loss rate and the radiation flux, we were able
