From Traditional Library Instruction to Collaborative Instruction: Charting the Course Toward Evidence-Based Practice
This presentation will explore how a libraryâs academic liaison program led to a strong teaching partnership within an academic division. The goal of the liaison program is to provide an essential link between the University of Southern Californiaâs Norris Medical Library and the Universityâs academic communities. This goal was achieved when a research support librarian teamed up with a professor of physical therapy to develop a curriculum for physical therapy students.
The objective of this teaching alliance was for first-year doctor of physical therapy students to learn basic skills for Evidence Based Practice. The collaboration combined the librarian\u27s expertise in database searching, library instruction, and information literacy with the subject knowledge of the physical therapist.
In developing the learning experience the professor of physical therapy requested assistance through the liaison program. Her requests, however, did not fit within traditional teaching methods used by the liaison. The librarian and the professor were able to maintain and enrich the interdisciplinary partnership through flexibility, communication, and cooperation. The collaborators will share how they overcame obstacles, learned to speak each other\u27s language, and quelled colleaguesâ concerns that they were abandoning traditional teaching methods.
The conceptual basis of the instructional model will be illustrated with specific teaching examples. A student-centered outcome measure to assess the efficacy of the teaching model will be presented
Wheat Transportation in Perspective
This publication discusses the history of the various types of transportation used to get wheat to market. The historic importance of railways in wheat transportation and railroad regulation, as well as the role of trucks and barges, is also explained
Two Black Hole Holography, Lensing and Intensity
We numerically verify the analysis of the "expanding horizon" theory of
Susskind in relation to the 't Hooft holographic conjecture. By using a
numerical simulation to work out the image formed by two black holes upon a
screen very far away, it is seen that it is impossible for a horizon to hide
behind another. We also compute the intensity distribution of such an
arrangement.Comment: 10 page
Establishing the Value of a Business: How the Practitioners Do It
The value of a business can be determined in several different ways. Â The question posed in this study is whether or not the background of a business evaluator tends to influence the method of valuation. Business practitioners of varying backgrounds were surveyed as to methodologies generally employed. It was discovered that accounting and financial consultants tend to prefer present value techniques using discounted cash flows or multiples. Business and real estate agents and brokers look toward appraisal of physical assets or net worth. Small business owners and managers are also likely to apply asset based methodologies. The strategic implication of these findings suggests that care should be taken when selecting professionals to perform valuation services since varying approaches often yield different results
Note on flat foliations of spherically symmetric spacetimes
It is known that spherically symmetric spacetimes admit flat spacelike
foliations. We point out a simple method of seeing this result via the
Hamiltonian constraints of general relativity. The method yields explicit
formulas for the extrinsic curvatures of the slicings.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in PRD, reference added, typos correcte
Generation of Full-Length cDNAs for Eight Putative GPCnR from the Cattle Tick, R. microplus Using a Targeted Degenerate PCR and Sequencing Strategy
We describe here a rapid and efficient method for the targeted isolation of specific members of gene families without the need for cloning. Using this strategy we isolated full length cDNAs for eight putative G-protein coupled neurotransmitter receptors (GPCnR) from the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Gene specific degenerate primers were designed using aligned amino acid sequences of similar receptor types from several insect and arachnid species. These primers were used to amplify and sequence a section of the target gene. Rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) PCR was used to generate full length cDNA sequences. Phylogenetic analysis placed 7 of these sequences into Class A G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) (Rm_α2AOR, Rm_ÎČ2AOR, Rm_Dop1R, Rm_Dop2R, Rm_INDR, Rm_5-HT7R and Rm_mAchR), and one into Class C GPCR (Rm_GABABR). Of the 7 Class A sequences, only Rm_mAchR is not a member of the biogenic amine receptor family. The isolation of these putative receptor sequences provides an opportunity to gain an understanding of acaricide resistance mechanisms such as amitraz resistance and might suggest possibilities for the development of new acaricides
Computing the spectrum of black hole radiation in the presence of high frequency dispersion: an analytical approach
We present a method for computing the spectrum of black hole radiation of a
scalar field satisfying a wave equation with high frequency dispersion. The
method involves a combination of Laplace transform and WKB techniques for
finding approximate solutions to ordinary differential equations. The modified
wave equation is obtained by adding a higher order derivative term suppressed
by powers of a fundamental momentum scale to the ordinary wave equation.
Depending on the sign of this new term, high frequency modes propagate either
superluminally or subluminally. We show that the resulting spectrum of created
particles is thermal at the Hawking temperature, and further that the out-state
is a thermal state at the Hawking temperature, to leading order in , for
either modification.Comment: 26 pages, plain latex, 6 figures included using psfi
Large quantum gravity effects: Unexpected limitations of the classical theory
3-dimensional gravity coupled to Maxwell (or Klein-Gordon) fields is exactly
soluble under the assumption of axi-symmetry. The solution is used to probe
several quantum gravity issues. In particular, it is shown that the quantum
fluctuations in the geometry are large unless the number and frequency of
photons satisfy the inequality . Thus, even when
there is a single photon of Planckian frequency, the quantum uncertainties in
the metric are significant. Results hold also for a sector of the 4-dimensional
theory (consisting of Einstein Rosen gravitational waves).Comment: 8 pages, No figures, ReVTe
