    Assessing the volatile composition of seaweed (Laminaria digitata) suspensions as function of thermal and mechanical treatments

    Macroalgae are a rich source of dietary fibre, protein, lipids and bioactives. However, more research is needed to understand how processing methods impact macroalgae techno-functional properties. In this work, aqueous suspensions of the fibre-rich brown algae Laminaria digitata were prepared by conventional food processing methods. The impact of sequence of processing steps (thermal and mechanical treatments), and heating time (15, 30 and 45 min), on volatile aroma composition were investigated. Changes in volatile composition were monitored with headspace GC-FID/MS analysis. Our results showed that both parameters impacted the volatiles profile of the suspensions. From an overall volatile perspective, short heating times (90 \ub0C for 15 min) led to similar profiles, independently of the sequence of thermal and mechanical treatments. However, longer heating times induced a larger release of several aldehydes, specific for each processing method. Our results bring new insights on the volatile composition of suspensions of Laminaria digitata, which are related to flavour properties, and aid design of food products containing seaweed

    HEMIC Project: Design of a Clinical Information Modelling Tool Based on ISO13972 Technical Specification

    The Andalusian Health Service is the public healthcare provider for 8.302.923 inhabitants in the South Spain. This organization coordinates primary and specialized care with an IT infrastructure composed by multiple Electronic Health Record Systems. According to the large volume of healthcare professionals involved, there is a need for providing a consistent management of information through multiple locations and systems. The HEMIC project aims to address this need developing and validating a methodology based on a software tool for standardizing information contained within EHR systems. The developed tool has been designed for supporting the participation of healthcare professionals the establishment of mechanisms for information governance. This research presents the requirements and designs for of a software tool focused on the adoption of recognized best practice in clinical information modeling. The designed tool has a Service Oriented Architecture that will be able to integrate terminology servers and repositories of clinical information models as part of the modeling process. Moreover, the defined tool organizes clinicians, IT developers and terminology experts involved in the modeling process in three levels to promote their coordination in the definition, specialization and validation of clinical information models.     Phenoloxidase activity acts as a mosquito innate immune response against infection with semliki forest virus

    Several components of the mosquito immune system including the RNA interference (RNAi), JAK/STAT, Toll and IMD pathways have previously been implicated in controlling arbovirus infections. In contrast, the role of the phenoloxidase (PO) cascade in mosquito antiviral immunity is unknown. Here we show that conditioned medium from the Aedes albopictus-derived U4.4 cell line contains a functional PO cascade, which is activated by the bacterium Escherichia coli and the arbovirus Semliki Forest virus (SFV) (Togaviridae; Alphavirus). Production of recombinant SFV expressing the PO cascade inhibitor Egf1.0 blocked PO activity in U4.4 cell- conditioned medium, which resulted in enhanced spread of SFV. Infection of adult female Aedes aegypti by feeding mosquitoes a bloodmeal containing Egf1.0-expressing SFV increased virus replication and mosquito mortality. Collectively, these results suggest the PO cascade of mosquitoes plays an important role in immune defence against arboviruses

Dial® software was used for the nutritional analysis and quantification.  Results: The analysis of the daily diet shows in this study that it is repetitive and equivalent in all infants during this age interval, which is made: at the beginning of the day for follow-on milk and infantile cereals, followed by vegetable baby food with meat, fruit baby food, and finally at the end of the day follow-on milk and cereals again. Indicating that energy intake was correct (1355 ± 252.93 kcal), highlighting that regarding macronutrients the protein percentage intake (44.40 ± 5.014 g/day) is high compared to the daily recommendations. In addition, it presents a repetitive and constant dietary pattern throughout all the participants. Conclusion: In our study population with supplementary feeding, the diet of these infants between 8 and 12 months of age is suited to the daily energy needs for that period of growth, as well as an inadequate daily ingestion on proteins. .Objetivo: En este trabajo se ha tratado de conocer profundamente la alimentación infantil con lactancia complementaria, a través de un cuestionario de consumo de alimentos de dos semanas de duración, el cual fue completado por los padres de lactantes de entre 8 y 12 meses, de la provincia de Badajoz. Para su análisis y cuantificación nutricional se manejó la aplicación informática Dial©.  Resultados: El análisis de la dieta diaria mostró en su estudio que es repetitiva y equivalente en todos los lactantes durante este intervalo de edad, la cual estaba constituida: al inicio del día por leches de continuación y cereales infantiles, continuando con potitos de verduras con carne, potitos de fruta y por último al final del día, de nuevo leches de continuación y cereales infantiles. Indicar que la ingesta energética era correcta (1355 ± 252,93 kcal), destacando que en lo que respecta a macronutrientes el porcentaje en proteínas se encontró elevado (44,40 ± 5,014 g) frente a las recomendaciones diarias. Además de presentar un patrón dietético repetitivo y constante en toda la población. Conclusión: En la población estudiada con lactancia complementaria, la dieta de estos lactantes entre 8 y 12 meses de vida se adecua a las necesidades energéticas diarias para dicho periodo de crecimiento, pero mantienen una inadecuada ingesta diaria de proteínas

    CD69 is a TGF-β/1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 target gene in monocytes

    CD69 is a transmembrane lectin that can be expressed on most hematopoietic cells. In monocytes, it has been functionally linked to the 5-lipoxygenase pathway in which the leukotrienes, a class of highly potent inflammatory mediators, are produced. However, regarding CD69 gene expression and its regulatory mechanisms in monocytes, only scarce data are available. Here, we report that CD69 mRNA expression, analogous to that of 5-lipoxygenase, is induced by the physiologic stimuli transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3) in monocytic cells. Comparison with T- and B-cell lines showed that the effect was specific for monocytes. CD69 expression levels were increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and kinetic analysis revealed a rapid onset of mRNA expression, indicating that CD69 is a primary TGF-β/1α,25(OH)2D3 target gene. PCR analysis of different regions of the CD69 mRNA revealed that de novo transcription was initiated and proximal and distal parts were induced concomitantly. In common with 5-lipoxygenase, no activation of 0.7 kb or ~2.3 kb promoter fragments by TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 could be observed in transient reporter assays for CD69. Analysis of mRNA stability using a transcription inhibitor and a 3′UTR reporter construct showed that TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 do not influence CD69 mRNA stability. Functional knockdown of Smad3 clearly demonstrated that upregulation of CD69 mRNA, in contrast to 5-LO, depends on Smad3. Comparative studies with different inhibitors for mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) revealed that MAPK signalling is involved in CD69 gene regulation, whereas 5-lipoxygenase gene expression was only partly affected. Mechanistically, we found evidence that CD69 gene upregulation depends on TAK1-mediated p38 activation. In summary, our data indicate that CD69 gene expression, conforming with 5-lipoxygenase, is regulated monocyte-specifically by the physiologic stimuli TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 on mRNA level, although different mechanisms account for the upregulation of each gene

    New insights on above ground biomass and forest attributes in tropical montane forests

    Despite the potential of tropical montane forests to store and sequester substantial amounts of carbon, little is known about the above ground biomass (AGB) and the factors affecting it in these ecosystems, especially in Africa. We investigated the height-diameter allometry, AGB, and related differences in AGB to taxonomic and structural forest attributes in three distinct forest types (dry, mixed species and elfin) in three mountains of northern Kenya. We established 24 permanent plots (20 m × 100 m) and sampled all trees ≥10 cm diameter following standard Rainfor protocols. We identified that different height-diameter allometric models could be used for different forests types, with the exception of the Michaelis–Menten model. In our study area, model choice had little effects on AGB estimates. In general, mixed forests had greater AGB than other forest types: in Mt Nyiro AGB estimates were 611, 408 and 241 Mg ha−1 for mixed, elfin and dry forests respectively. Forests in Mt Nyiro, the highest mountain had greater AGB than in the other mountains. In our study area, differences in AGB were related to forest structure attributes, with little influence of taxonomic attributes. The mixed and elfin forests in Mt Nyiro, dominated by Podocarpus latifolius and Faurea saligna contained comparable AGB to lowland rainforests, highlighting the importance of tropical montane forests as large carbon stock, which could be released if converted to another land cover type

    An Experimental Study of Effects of Step Roughness in Skimming Flows on Stepped Chutes

    On a spillway chute, a stepped design increases the rate of energy dissipation on the chute itself and reduces the size of a downstream energy dissipator. Up to date, the effects of step roughness on the flow properties remain unknown despite the practical relevance to damaged concrete steps, rock chutes and gabions weirs. New measurements were conducted in a large-size laboratory facility with two step conditions (smooth and rough) and three types of step roughness. Detailed air-water flow properties were measured systematically for several flow rates. The results showed faster flow motion on rough step chutes. Although the finding is counter-intuitive, it is linked with the location of the inception point of free-surface aeration being located further downstream than for a smooth stepped chute for an identical flow rate. In the aerated flow region, the velocities on rough-step chutes were larger than those of smooth chute flows for a given flow rate and dimensionless location from the inception point of free-surface aeration both at step edges and between step edges. The results suggest that design guidelines for smooth (concrete) stepped spillway may not be suitable to rough stepped chutes including gabion stepped weirs, and older stepped chutes with damaged steps

The cell type predominantly responsible for the production of extra-cellular matrix in renal fibrosis is the myofibroblast, and fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation is probably a crucial event.
