A dual-mode generalized likelihood ratio approach to self-reorganizing digital flight control system design
The research is reported on the problems of failure detection and reliable system design for digital aircraft control systems. Failure modes, cross detection probability, wrong time detection, application of performance tools, and the GLR computer package are discussed
Shock Structure Analysis and Aerodynamics in a Weakly Ionized Gas Flow
The structure of a shock wave propagating through a weakly ionized gas is analyzed using an electrofluid dynamics model composed of classical conservation laws and Gauss Law. A viscosity model is included to correctly model the spatial scale of the shock structure, and quasi-neutrality is not assumed. A detailed analysis of the structure of a shock wave propagating in a weakly ionized gas is presented, together with a discussion of the physics underlying the key features of the shock structure. A model for the flow behind a shock wave propagating through a weakly ionized gas is developed and used to analyze the effect of the ionization on the aerodynamics and performance of a two-dimensional hypersonic lifting body
Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis risk and liver disease.
Objective. Evaluate the incidence of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with liver disease in the peritransplant period. Materials and Methods. This IRB approved study retrospectively reviewed patients requiring transplantation for cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or both from 2003 to 2013. Records were reviewed identifying those having gadolinium enhanced MRI within 1 year of posttransplantation to document degree of liver disease, renal disease, and evidence for NSF. Results. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI was performed on 312 of 837 patients, including 23 with severe renal failure (GFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 cm(2)) and 289 with GFR > 30. Two of 23 patients with renal failure developed NSF compared to zero NSF cases in 289 patients with GFR > 30 (0/289; P < 0.003). High dose gadodiamide was used in the two NSF cases. There was no increased incidence of NSF with severe liver disease (1/71) compared to nonsevere liver disease (1/241; P = 0.412). Conclusion. Renal disease is a risk factor for NSF, but in our small sample our evidence suggests liver disease is not an additional risk factor, especially if a low-risk gadolinium agent is used. Noting that not all patients received high-risk gadolinium, a larger study focusing on patients receiving high-risk gadolinium is needed to further evaluate NSF risk in liver disease in the peritransplant period
Deterministic Brownian motion generated from differential delay equations
This paper addresses the question of how Brownian-like motion can arise from
the solution of a deterministic differential delay equation. To study this we
analytically study the bifurcation properties of an apparently simple
differential delay equation and then numerically investigate the probabilistic
properties of chaotic solutions of the same equation. Our results show that
solutions of the deterministic equation with randomly selected initial
conditions display a Gaussian-like density for long time, but the densities are
supported on an interval of finite measure. Using these chaotic solutions as
velocities, we are able to produce Brownian-like motions, which show
statistical properties akin to those of a classical Brownian motion over both
short and long time scales. Several conjectures are formulated for the
probabilistic properties of the solution of the differential delay equation.
Numerical studies suggest that these conjectures could be "universal" for
similar types of "chaotic" dynamics, but we have been unable to prove this.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figure
Evolution equations of curvature tensors along the hyperbolic geometric flow
We consider the hyperbolic geometric flow introduced by Kong and Liu [KL]. When the Riemannian
metric evolve, then so does its curvature. Using the techniques and ideas of
S.Brendle [Br,BS], we derive evolution equations for the Levi-Civita connection
and the curvature tensors along the hyperbolic geometric flow. The method and
results are computed and written in global tensor form, different from the
local normal coordinate method in [DKL1]. In addition, we further show that any
solution to the hyperbolic geometric flow that develops a singularity in finite
time has unbounded Ricci curvature.Comment: 15 page
Implementing optimal control pulse shaping for improved single-qubit gates
We employ pulse shaping to abate single-qubit gate errors arising from the
weak anharmonicity of transmon superconducting qubits. By applying shaped
pulses to both quadratures of rotation, a phase error induced by the presence
of higher levels is corrected. Using a derivative of the control on the
quadrature channel, we are able to remove the effect of the anharmonic levels
for multiple qubits coupled to a microwave resonator. Randomized benchmarking
is used to quantify the average error per gate, achieving a minimum of
0.007+/-0.005 using 4 ns-wide pulse.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Charge Orbits of Extremal Black Holes in Five Dimensional Supergravity
We derive the U-duality charge orbits, as well as the related moduli spaces,
of "large" and "small" extremal black holes in non-maximal ungauged
Maxwell-Einstein supergravities with symmetric scalar manifolds in d=5
space-time dimensions. The stabilizer groups of the various classes of orbits
are obtained by determining and solving suitable U-invariant sets of
constraints, both in "bare" and "dressed" charges bases, with various methods.
After a general treatment of attractors in real special geometry (also
considering non-symmetric cases), the N=2 "magic" theories, as well as the N=2
Jordan symmetric sequence, are analyzed in detail. Finally, the half-maximal
(N=4) matter-coupled supergravity is also studied in this context.Comment: 1+63 pages, 6 Table
Muonium as a shallow center in GaN
A paramagnetic muonium (Mu) state with an extremely small hyperfine parameter
was observed for the first time in single-crystalline GaN below 25 K. It has a
highly anisotropic hyperfine structure with axial symmetry along the [0001]
direction, suggesting that it is located either at a nitrogen-antibonding or a
bond-centered site oriented parallel to the c-axis. Its small ionization energy
(=< 14 meV) and small hyperfine parameter (--10^{-4} times the vacuum value)
indicate that muonium in one of its possible sites produces a shallow state,
raising the possibility that the analogous hydrogen center could be a source of
n-type conductivity in as-grown GaN.Comment: 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. Letter
The 2nd order renormalization group flow for non-linear sigma models in 2 dimensions
We show that for two dimensional manifolds M with negative Euler
characteristic there exists subsets of the space of smooth Riemannian metrics
which are invariant and either parabolic or backwards-parabolic for the 2nd
order RG flow. We also show that solutions exists globally on these sets.
Finally, we establish the existence of an eternal solution that has both a UV
and IR limit, and passes through regions where the flow is parabolic and
backwards-parabolic
Absence of Magnetism in Hcp Iron-Nickel at 11 K
Synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy (SMS) was performed on an hcp-phase alloy of composition Fe92Ni8 at a pressure of 21 GPa and a temperature of 11 K. Density functional theoretical calculations predict antiferromagnetism in both hcp Fe and hcp Fe-Ni. For hcp Fe, these calculations predict no hyperfine magnetic field, consistent with previous experiments. For hcp Fe-Ni, however, substantial hyperfine magnetic fields are predicted, but these were not observed in the SMS spectra. Two possible explanations are suggested. First, small but significant errors in the generalized gradient approximation density functional may lead to an erroneous prediction of magnetic order or of erroneous hyperfine magnetic fields in antiferromagnetic hcp Fe-Ni. Alternately, quantum fluctuations with periods much shorter than the lifetime of the nuclear excited state would prohibit the detection of moments by SMS
