Tunneling spectroscopy in the magnetic superconductor TmNi2B2C
We present new measurements about the tunneling conductance in the
borocarbide superconductor TmNiBC. The results show a very good
agreement with weak coupling BCS theory, without any lifetime broadening
parameter, over the whole sample surface. We detect no particular change of the
tunneling spectroscopy below 1.5K, when both the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase

The (p,q) String Tension in a Warped Deformed Conifold
We find the tension spectrum of the bound states of p fundamental strings and
q D-strings at the bottom of a warped deformed conifold. We show that it can be
obtained from a D3-brane wrapping a 2-cycle that is stabilized by both electric
and magnetic fluxes. Because the F-strings are Z_M-charged with non-zero
binding energy, binding can take place even if (p,q) are not coprime.
Implications for cosmic strings are briefly discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figur
A continuous pilot-scale system using coal-mine drainage sludge to treat acid mine drainage contaminated with high concentrations of Pb, Zn, and other heavy metals
A series of pilot-scale tests were conducted with a continuous system composed of a stirring tank reactor, settling tank, and sand filter. In order to treat acidic drainage from a Pb-Zn mine containing high levels of heavy metals, the potential use of coal-mine drainage sludge (CMDS) was examined. The pilot-scale tests showed that CMDS could effectively neutralize the acidic drainage due to its high alkalinity production. A previous study revealed that calcite and goethite contained in CMDS contributed to dissolutive coprecipitation and complexation with heavy metals. The continuous system not only has high removal efficiencies (97.2-99.8), but also large total rate constants (K total, 0.21-10.18h -1) for all heavy metals. More specifically, the pilot system has a much higher Zn(II) loading rate (45.3gm -3day -1) than other reference systems, such as aerobic wetland coupled with algal mats and anoxic limestone drains. The optimum conditions were found to be a CMDS loading of 280gL -1 and a flow rate of 8Lday -1, and the necessary quantity of CMDS was 91.3gL -1day -1, as the replacement cycle of CMDS was determined to be 70 days. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
Slowly rotating charged black holes in anti-de Sitter third order Lovelock gravity
In this paper, we study slowly rotating black hole solutions in Lovelock
gravity (n=3). These exact slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained in
uncharged and charged cases, respectively. Up to the linear order of the
rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the
uncharged black holes get no corrections from rotation. In charged case, we
compute magnetic dipole moment and gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes. It is
shown that the gyromagnetic ratio keeps invariant after introducing the
Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock interactions.Comment: 14 pages, no figur
Aquabacterium limnoticum sp nov., isolated from a freshwater spring
A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, short-rod-shaped, non-motile and non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated ABP-4(T), was isolated from a freshwater spring in Taiwan and was characterized using the polyphasic taxonomy approach. Growth occurred at 20-40 degrees C (optimum, 30-37 degrees C), at pH 7.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0-9.0) and with 0-3 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ABP-4(T), together with Aquabacterium fontiphilum CS-6(T) (96.4 % sequence similarity), Aquabacterium commune B8(T) (96.1 %), Aquabacterium citratiphilum B4(T) (95.5 %) and Aquabacterium parvum B6(T) (94.7 %), formed a deep line within the order Burkholderiales. Strain ABP-4(T) contained summed feature 3 (comprising C-16:1 omega 7c and/or C-16:1 omega 6c), C-18:1 omega 7c and C-16:0 as predominant fatty acids. The major cellular hydroxy fatty acid was C-10:0 3-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the DNA G+C content was 68.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine, diphosphatidylglycerol and several uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA-DNA relatedness of strain ABP-4(T) with respect to recognized species of the genus Aquabacterium was less than 70 %. On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain ABP-4(T) represents a novel species in the genus Aquabacterium, for which the name Aquabacterium limnoticum sp. nov. is proposed. Theory of coherent acoustic phonons in InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells
A microscopic theory for the generation and propagation of coherent LA
phonons in pseudomorphically strained wurzite (0001) InGaN/GaN multi-quantum
well (MQW) p-i-n diodes is presented. The generation of coherent LA phonons is
driven by photoexcitation of electron-hole pairs by an ultrafast Gaussian pump
laser and is treated theoretically using the density matrix formalism. We use
realistic wurzite bandstructures taking valence-band mixing and strain-induced
piezo- electric fields into account. In addition, the many-body Coulomb
ineraction is treated in the screened time-dependent Hartree-Fock
approximation. We find that under typical experimental conditions, our
microscopic theory can be simplified and mapped onto a loaded string problem
which can be easily solved.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figure
SIR performance evaluation of MB-OFDM UWB system with residual timing offset
Signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) performance of a multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband system with residual timing offset is investigated. To do so, an exact mathematical derivation of the SIR of this system is derived. Momentum dependent dxz/yz band splitting in LaFeAsO
The nematic phase in iron based superconductors (IBSs) has attracted attention with a notion that it may provide important clue to the superconductivity. A series of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies were performed to understand the origin of the nematic phase. However, there is lack of ARPES study on LaFeAsO nematic phase. Here, we report the results of ARPES studies of the nematic phase in LaFeAsO. Degeneracy breaking between the dxz and dyz hole bands near the Γ and M point is observed in the nematic phase. Different temperature dependent band splitting behaviors are observed at the Γ and M points. The energy of the band splitting near the M point decreases as the temperature decreases while it has little temperature dependence near the Γ point. The nematic nature of the band shift near the M point is confirmed through a detwin experiment using a piezo device. Since a momentum dependent splitting behavior has been observed in other iron based superconductors, our observation confirms that the behavior is a universal one among iron based superconductors
