    Optimized Confinement of Fermions in Two Dimensions

    One of the challenging features of studying model Hamiltonians with cold atoms in optical lattices is the presence of spatial inhomogeneities induced by the confining potential, which results in the coexistence of different phases. This paper presents Quantum Monte Carlo results comparing meth- ods for confining fermions in two dimensions, including conventional diagonal confinement (DC), a recently proposed 'off-diagonal confinement' (ODC), as well as a trap which produces uniform den- sity in the lattice. At constant entropy and for currently accessible temperatures, we show that the current DC method results in the strongest magnetic signature, primarily because of its judicious use of entropy sinks at the lattice edge. For d-wave pairing, we show that a constant density trap has the more robust signal and that ODC can implement a constant density profile. This feature is important to any prospective search for superconductivity in optical lattices

    The Finite Size Error in Many-body Simulations with long-Ranged Interactions

    We discuss the origin of the finite size error of the energy in many-body simulation of systems of charged particles and we propose a correction based on the random phase approximation at long wave lengths. The correction comes from contributions mainly determined by the organized collective oscillations of the interacting system. Finite size corrections, both on kinetic and potential energy, can be calculated within a single simulation.     Syphilitic aortitis is a rare complication of tertiary syphilis, which can lead to aortic aneurysm formation, aortic valvular insufficiency, and ostial coronary stenosis. Syphilis has re-emerged worldwide over recent decades and vascular surgeons should be aware of its cardiovascular manifestations. Atypical clinical presentation, such as hemoptysis and a computed tomography angiography pattern of a thicker aneurysmal wall with ulcer-like aneurysm projections, should raise suspicion of syphilitic aortic aneurysm. An early diagnosis and appropriate surgical and medical therapies significantly contribute to successful treatment and favorable prognosis. Herein is reported the case of an 82-year-old male patient, positive for syphilis infection, with impending aortic arch aneurysm rupture treated with a hybrid arch repair. After 7 months, the patient was brought to the emergency room in cardiac arrest. Unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers were performed, and an autopsy showed cardiac tamponade due to rupture of the ascending aorta

    Management of technology licensing as a foreign market entry mode:the case of leading Italian pharmaceutical and biotech companies

    Technology licensing has been recognized for decades as one of the new market entry modes. Companies often issue licenses in foreign countries in order to enter a new market. This paper aims to unearth how companies manage the technology licensing, purposely used by firms in order to enter new markets. Starting from the perspectives given in the Dunning’s eclectic theory on foreign market entry modes, and by adopting the process view perspective from the technology management literature, and also incorporating the Dynamic Capabilities Framework, this paper tries to explain the managerial aspects of technology licensing as the foreign market entry mode. Although technology licensing as a market entry mode has been previously thoroughly explored, limited attention has been given to the possible ways companies approach in managing technology licensing for the new market entry purpose. In the paper authors rely on the multiple case study research approach in order to reveal the relevant managerial aspects implemented by Italian pharmaceutical and biotech companies that exploit technology licensing for the new market entry purpose. The key findings in this paper indicate two points: (i) companies adopt the process view perspective for managing technology licensing as the foreign market entry mode and (ii) throughout the stages of this process firms tend to develop their dynamic capabilities (sensing, seizing and reconfiguring). These research findings contribute to a deeper understanding of technology licensing as a market entry mode in the Innovation and Technology Management literature, but also in the Internationalization literature, by integrating the elements coming from these two research streams. The managerial implications resulting from this paper may be especially useful for the firms operating in the research intensive industries (like chemical, semi-conductor, biotech, etc.), enabling them to recognize the relevant issues in technology licensing process for the market entry purpose.<br

It is consumed raw or steamed and has a short shelf life of approximately seven days. The objective of this study was to evaluate the postharvest behaviour of watercress minimally processed and stored at optimal storage temperature vs. market temperature. Treatments were: shoots packed with plain film (PD961EZ, 31µm thickness) and stored in refrigerated chambers at 1 ± 0.5 oC and 8 ± 2 oC for 10 days. Overall visual quality, gas concentration inside the packages, chlorophyll, reducing sugar, ascorbic acid, oxalic acid and weight loss were evaluated. At the end of the storage period overall visual quality, gas concentration and reducing sugars were affected by storage time and temperature, whereas dehidro ascorbic, oxalic acid and weight loss were not

    Categorical and dimensional approaches in the evaluation of the relationship between attachment and personality disorders: An empirical study

    Although several studies have highlighted the relationship between attachment states of mind and personality disorders (PD), their findings have not been consistent, possibly due to the application of the traditional taxonomic classification model of attachment. A more recently developed dimensional classification of attachment representations, including more specific aspects of trauma-related representations, may have advantages. In this study we compare specific associations and predictive power of the categorical attachment and dimensional models applied to 230 Adult Attachment Interview transcripts obtained from personality disordered and non-psychiatric subjects. We also investigate the role that current levels of psychiatric distress may have in the prediction of PD. The results showed that both models predict the presence of PD, with the dimensional approach doing better in discriminating overall diagnosis of PD. However, both models are less helpful in discriminating specific PD diagnostic subtypes. Current psychiatric distress was found to be the most consistent predictor of PD capturing a large share of the variance and obscuring the role played by attachment variables. The results suggest that attachment parameters correlate with the presence of PD alone and has no specific associations with particular PD subtypes when current psychiatric distress is taken into account
