Maternal concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls and dichlorodiphenyl dichlorethylene and birth weight in Michigan fish eaters: a cohort study
BACKGROUND: Studies on maternal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) reported inconsistent findings regarding birth weight: some studies showed no effect, some reported decreased birth weight, and one study found an increase in weights. These studies used different markers of exposure, such as measurement of PCBs in maternal serum or questionnaire data on fish consumption. Additionally maternal exposures, such as dichlorodiphenyl-dichloroethylene (DDE), which are related to PCB exposure and may interfere with the PCB effect, were rarely taken into account. METHODS: Between 1973 and 1991, the Michigan Department of Community Health conducted three surveys to assess PCB and DDE serum concentrations in Michigan anglers. Through telephone interviews with parents, we gathered information on the birth characteristics of their offspring, focusing on deliveries that occurred after 1968. We used the maternal organochlorine (OC) measurement closest to the date of delivery as the exposure. Although one mother may have contributed more than one child, serum concentrations derived from measurements in different surveys could vary for different children from the same mother. The maternal DDE and PCB serum concentrations were categorized as follows: 0 -< 5 microg / L, 5 -< 15 microg / L, 15 -< 25 microg / L, ≥25 microg / L. Using repeated measurement models (Generalized Estimation Equation), we estimated the adjusted mean birth weight controlling for gender, birth order, gestational age, date of delivery as well as maternal age, height, education, and smoking status. RESULTS: We identified 168 offspring who were born after 1968 and had maternal exposure information. We found a reduced birth weight for the offspring of mothers who had a PCB concentration ≥25 microg / L (adjusted birth weight = 2,958 g, p = 0.022). This group, however, was comprised of only seven observations. The association was not reduced when we excluded preterm deliveries. The birth weight of offspring was increased in women with higher DDE concentrations when controlling for PCBs; however, this association was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Our results contribute to the body of evidence that high maternal serum PCB concentration may reduce the birth weight in offspring. However, only a small proportion of mothers may actually be exposed to PCB concentrations ≥25 microg / L
Holographic Anyons in the ABJM Theory
We consider the holographic anyons in the ABJM theory from three different
aspects of AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we identify the holographic anyons by
using the field equations of supergravity, including the Chern-Simons terms of
the probe branes. We find that the composite of Dp-branes wrapped over CP3 with
the worldvolume magnetic fields can be the anyons. Next, we discuss the
possible candidates of the dual anyonic operators on the CFT side, and find the
agreement of their anyonic phases with the supergravity analysis. Finally, we
try to construct the brane profile for the holographic anyons by solving the
equations of motion and Killing spinor equations for the embedding profile of
the wrapped branes. As a by product, we find a BPS spiky brane for the dual

What happened to the fig tree? : an empirical study in psychological type and biblical hermeneutics
The SIFT method of biblical hermeneutics and liturgical preaching has its roots in Jungian psychological type theory and maintains that the reading and interpretation of text is shaped by individual preferences within the perceiving process (sensing and intuition) and within the evaluating process (thinking and feeling). The present study tests the empirical foundation for this method by examining the way in which three groups of participants familiar with handling scripture (N = 31, 14, and 47) interpret the Marcan narrative concerning the cleansing of the temple and the cursing of the fig tree. The data provide further support for the psychological principles underpinning the SIFT method
M-Branes and Metastable States
We study a supersymmetry breaking deformation of the M-theory background
found in arXiv:hep-th/0012011. The supersymmetric solution is a warped product
of R^{2,1} and the 8-dimensional Stenzel space, which is a higher dimensional
generalization of the deformed conifold. At the bottom of the warped throat
there is a 4-sphere threaded by \tilde{M} units of 4-form flux. The dual
(2+1)-dimensional theory has a discrete spectrum of bound states. We add p
anti-M2 branes at a point on the 4-sphere, and show that they blow up into an
M5-brane wrapping a 3-sphere at a fixed azimuthal angle on the 4-sphere. This
supersymmetry breaking state turns out to be metastable for p / \tilde{M} <
0.054. We find a smooth O(3)-symmetric Euclidean bounce solution in the
M5-brane world volume theory that describes the decay of the false vacuum.
Calculation of the Euclidean action shows that the metastable state is
extremely long-lived. We also describe the corresponding metastable states and
their decay in the type IIA background obtained by reduction along one of the

Congregational bonding social capital and psychological type : an empirical enquiry among Australian churchgoers
This study explores the variation in levels of bonding social capital experienced by individual churchgoers, drawing on data generated by the Australian National Church Life Survey, and employing a five-item measure of church-related bonding social capital. Data provided by 2065 Australian churchgoers are used to test the thesis that individual differences in bonding social capital are related to a psychological model of psychological types (employing the Jungian distinctions). The data demonstrated that higher levels of bonding social capital were found among extraverts (compared with introverts), among intuitive types (compared with sensing types) and among feeling types (compared with thinking types), but no significant differences were found between judging types and perceiving types
Corner contributions to holographic entanglement entropy
The entanglement entropy of three-dimensional conformal field theories
contains a universal contribution coming from corners in the entangling
surface. We study these contributions in a holographic framework and, in
particular, we consider the effects of higher curvature interactions in the
bulk gravity theory. We find that for all of our holographic models, the corner
contribution is only modified by an overall factor but the functional
dependence on the opening angle is not modified by the new gravitational
interactions. We also compare the dependence of the corner term on the new
gravitational couplings to that for a number of other physical quantities, and
we show that the ratio of the corner contribution over the central charge
appearing in the two-point function of the stress tensor is a universal
function for all of the holographic theories studied here. Comparing this
holographic result to the analogous functions for free CFT's, we find fairly
good agreement across the full range of the opening angle. However, there is a
precise match in the limit where the entangling surface becomes smooth, i.e.,
the angle approaches , and we conjecture the corresponding ratio is a
universal constant for all three-dimensional conformal field theories. In this

Geometry of open strings ending on backreacting D3-branes
We investigate open string theory on backreacting D3-branes using a spacetime
approach. We study in detail the half-BPS supergravity solutions describing
open strings ending on D3-branes, in the near horizon of the D3-branes. We
recover quantitatively several non-trivial features of open string physics
including the appearance of D3-brane spikes, the polarization of fundamental
strings into D5-branes, and the Hanany-Witten effect. Finally we detail the
computation of the gravitational potential between two open strings, and
contrast it with the holographic computation of Wilson lines. We argue that the
D-brane backreaction has a large influence on the low-energy gravity, which may
lead to experimental tests for string theory brane-world scenarios.Comment: 64 pages, 20 figure
Physical Response Functions of Strongly Coupled Massive Quantum Liquids
We study physical properties of strongly coupled massive quantum liquids from
their spectral functions using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The generic model
that we consider is dense, heavy fundamental matter coupled to SU(N_c) super
Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature above the deconfinement phase
transition but below the scale set by the baryon number density. In this setup,
we study the current-current correlators of the baryon number density using new
techniques that employ a scaling behavior in the dual geometry. Our results,
the AC conductivity, the quasi-particle spectrum and the Drude-limit parameters
like the relaxation time are simple temperature-independent expressions that
depend only on the mass-squared to density ratio and display a crossover
between a baryon- and meson-dominated regime. We concentrated on the
(2+1)-dimensional defect case, but in principle our results can also be

Risk and sensitivity quantification of fracture failure employing cohesive zone elements
Many structures are subjected to the risk of fatigue failure. For their reliability-based design, it is thus important to calculate the probability of fatigue failure and assess the relative importance of the involved parameters. Although various studies have analyzed the fatigue failure, the stage of fracture failure has been less focused. In particular, the risk analysis of fracture failure needs to be conducted considering its importance in actual structures. This article proposes a new probabilistic framework for the risk and sensitivity analysis of structural fatigue failure employing cohesive zone elements. The proposed framework comprises three steps, namely finite element analysis using cohesive zone elements, response surface construction, and risk and sensitivity analysis of fatigue failure, which require several mathematical techniques and algorithms. The proposed framework is tested by applying it to an illustrative example, and the corresponding analysis results of fracture failure probability with different threshold values of a limit-state function are presented. In addition, the sensitivities of failure risk with respect to the statistical parameters of random variables are presented and their relative importance is discussed
New Kadampa Buddhists and Jungian psychological type
Building on previous studies on Canadian Anglicans and Catholics, this study examines and discusses the psychological type profile of 31 adherents to New Kadampa Buddhism. Like Anglicans and Catholics, Buddhists preferred introversion (I). Like Anglicans who preferred intuition (N) and unlike Catholics who preferred sensing (S), Buddhists displayed a preference for intuition (N). Unlike Anglicans and Catholics who both preferred feeling (F), Buddhists displayed a balance between feeling (F) and thinking (T). Like Anglicans and unlike Catholics, Buddhists preferred the Apollonian temperament (NF) over the Epimethean temperament (SJ). These data are discussed to interpret the psychological appeal of New Kadampa Buddhism
