WOS: 000445401900006It is shown herein that submicron-scale displacement can be measured with a simple optical arrangement which contains a laser diode, two mirrors and a basic webcam. The coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of steel and copper alloy rods have been measured with this system. The CTE results were obtained by measuring the length change with respect to the temperature. The average CTE measurement was 12.25 +/- 0.10 x 10(-6)/K for the steel, and 18.35 +/- 0.25 x 10(-6)/K for the copper alloy. As a result, it is evident that the proposed system can be used for industrial projects and applications, as well as undergraduate or graduate level laboratory experiments which require precise measurements

AIM: The aim of this study was to develop health perception and psychosocial skills in disadvantaged students in a primary school. METHOD: This interventional study was conducted in a primary school between May 2012 and June 2012 in Kepez, Canakkale within the context of “Consultancy Application in Primary Schools”as the first step of “From Local to Cambridge and NASA: Development of Canakkale Values and Promotional Awareness in Disadvantaged Students” (TR22.11.SK01.0111) project. Fifteen students with different disadvantages at the 5th,6th,7th,and 8th grades in the second semester were included in the study. Training studies were performed to develop psychosocial skills and health perception of students. These studies were performed at the school library twice a week for three weeks. In this study, socio-demographic, health perception evaluation and psychosocial skill evaluation forms were used as material. Study data were analyzed using by SPSS, 15.00 version. RESULTS: Most students (66.6%) were female. Statistically significant difference was defined in psychosocial skill developments of students between the median values measured three weeks apart (p<0.001). When examined responses of students to the health perception scale, it was observed that favorable attitudes of students were increased, whereas unfavorable attitudes were decreased in the measurements during the training. CONCLUSION: Students with disadvantages gained physical, psychological and social skills (being interactive; sharing, communicating, enterprising) features of leadership and social supporting as well as the development of health perception. Two students, who successfully completed these training activities in our study group, were chosen to the project camp. One of these two students, who successfully completed the activities in the project camp and past the final exam was accepted by science trip in the United Kingdom. In conclusion, professional group trainings at early ages may be helpful for developing characteristics of health perception, psychosocial skills, enterprising in disadvantaged students. © 2015, TAF Preventive Medicine Bulletin.

Em casos selecionados, BV pode auxiliar na localização correta do corpo estranho e até mesmo evitar o procedimento de broncoscopia rígida na ausência de corpo estranho.<br>Foreign body aspiration (FBA) into the tracheobronchial tree is a common problem in children, especially in those under three years of age. Preliminary radiological evaluation reveals normal chest X-rays in nearly 30% of such patients. Tomography-generated virtual bronchoscopy (VB) can facilitate the early diagnosis and rapid management of these cases. The definitive treatment is the removal of the foreign body by means of rigid bronchoscopy under general anesthesia. The objective of this study was to describe the use of VB in two patients with suspicion of FBA, as well as to review the literature regarding this topic. The two patients presented with sudden onset of respiratory symptoms and history of cough or choking with foods before these symptoms. Both patients were submitted to VB. In both cases, we detected an endobronchial foreign body, which was then removed by conventional rigid bronchoscopy in one of the cases. Only recently developed, VB is a noninvasive imaging method that has potential for use in detecting foreign bodies in the airways of children. In select cases, VB can indicate the exact location of the foreign body and even preclude the need to submit patients to rigid bronchoscopy in the absence of a foreign body

Understanding the philosophy of tourism education: A perspective study in Turkey

    No full text
Although tourism is an industry-driven discipline, its philosophical roots are inseparable in education. The nature of tourism, expectations of each stakeholder - industry, tourists, academia, students, educators, society - and managerial attitudes of universities in general and tourism schools in particular, make it controversial to design a flawless education system for the interest of all parties. Based on educational philosophies, this study aims to reveal the perspectives of academics on ontological and epistemological dimensions by seeking answers to the objective, role, responsibility, and problems of tourism education. The study applies content analysis as a qualitative research method. Data were collected among 30 tourism academics with at least a PhD through an unstructured online form. Results demonstrate that tourism faculties in Turkey had a symbolic or superficial structural change in recent years. Tourism academics espoused an eclectic approach, prioritizing the role of educators as well as a vocational curriculum. Results also reveal that tourism education has encountered various problems arising from intellectual resources and physical resources, managerial policies, and institutional changes
