Profiling the vendors of COVIDâ19 related product on the Darknet: An observational study
Background
In a time of unprecedented global change, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in demand of COVID-19 vaccines and related certifications. Mainly due to supply shortages, counterfeit vaccines, fake documentation, and alleged cures to illegal portfolios, have been offered on darkweb marketplaces (DWMs) with important public health consequences. We aimed to profile key DWMs and vendors by presenting some in-depth case studies.
Methods
A non-systematic search for COVID-19 products was performed across 118 DWMs. Levels of activity, credibility, content, COVID-19 product listings, privacy protocols were among the features retrieved. Open web fora and other open web sources were also considered for further analysis of both functional and non functional DWMs. Collected data refers to the period between January 2020 and October 2021.
Results
A total of 42 relevant listings sold by 24 vendors across eight DWMs were identified. Four of these markets were active and well-established at the time of the study with good levels of credibility. COVID-19 products were listed alongside other marketplace content. Vendors had a trusted profile, communicated in English language and accepted payments in cryptocurrencies (Monero or Bitcoin). Their geographical location included the USA, Asia and Europe. While COVID-19 related goods were mostly available for regional supply, other listings were also shipped worldwide.
Interpretation
Findings emerging from this study rise important questions about the health safety of certain DWMs activities and encourage the development of targeted interventions to overcome such new and rapidly expanding public health threats.

MSH2 missense mutations and HNPCC syndrome: Pathogenicity assessment in a human expression system
Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) is associated with germline mutations in one of several MisMatch Repair (MMR) genes. An increasing proportion (20-25%) of the reported MSH2 variants consists of single amino-acid substitution with uncertain disease-causing significance. The present study was undertaken to functionally characterize 3 MSH2 nontruncating variants: p.Gly162Arg (c.484G>C), p.Asp167His (c.499G>C) and p.Arg359Ser (c.1077A>T). Missense alterations, were assessed in a human system for expression/stability and for the ability to heterodimerize with MSH6 and correctly localize into the nucleus. Functional assays results were correlated with clinical and genetic features indicative of HNPCC as MicroSatellite- Instability (MSI), abnormalities of MMR gene expression in tumour tissue (IHC) and familial history. p.Gly162Arg and p.Arg359Ser variants showed a clearly decreased expression level of the MutSa\uce\ub1 complex and were associated with an abnormal subcellular localization pattern, which can be suggestive of an incorrect MSH2/MSH6 heterodimerization. Functional analysis results were supported by MSI and IHC data and by familial cancer history. The subcellular localization assay, performed in a human expression system, classifies as pathogenetic two MSH2 nontruncating alterations providing a useful tool in genetic testing programs
Surface characterization of photodegraded poly(ethylene terephthalate). The effect of ultraviolet absorbers
Abstract The surface characterization of photodegraded poly(ethylene terephthalate) was investigated. Films obtained by bi-axial extrusion were exposed in a laboratory weathering chamber for periods of up to , 1100 h of irradiation. Samples prepared with and without an ultraviolet (UV) absorber were tested by infrared, UV -visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicated that the unstabilized films are very susceptible to the degradation effects causing a large deterioration, especially in surface layers. The presence of an ultraviolet light absorber effectively reduced the formation of carboxyl end-groups at the surface as well as in the bulk of the films. In the case of samples with UV absorber the fluorescence data showed a barrier imposed by this additive in the formation of the monohydroxy-terephthalate. Scanning electron microcopy of fracture surfaces showed that film ductility is highly reduced after exposure.
Integrating Western and non-Western cultural expressions to further cultural and creative tourism: a case study
The term cultural industries was coined more than half a century ago, but at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the broader concept of creative industries, covering a wide range of cultural, design and digital activity, captured the imagination of public policymakers at national and city levels. Paralleling these developments has been the recognition of the phenomenon of cultural tourism and, more recently, the emergence of the idea of creative tourism, that is, tourism programmes designed to engage tourists actively in cultural activity.
This paper presents a case study of a creative tourism event which took place in 2012 in the City of Manchester in the UK. The festival, which celebrated West African culture, utilised existing cultural institutions of the city and drew on the talents of local and visiting members of West African community to engage not only tourists but also indigenous and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) residents of Manchester in a variety of cultural activities. It thus used the focus of creative tourism to seek to foster community and cultural development as well as tourism
Fluorescence polarization and rheological studies of the poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) hydrogels produced by UV radiation
Abstract Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) hydrogels produced by direct ultraviolet irradiation of PVP aqueous solution leads to crosslinking through pyrrolidinone moiety photolysis. Generally, hydrogel physical properties, like crosslinking density, pore size, swelling capacity, storage and loss moduli are obtained by swelling and rheological tests. However, relations between anisotropy obtained by fluorescence polarization studies and these properties have not been addressed for hydrogel systems. In this work we show that there is a correlation between the data obtained from anisotropy and rheological experiments, since both of them are related with crosslinking density of the hydrogels. These results reveal that fluorescence polarization spectroscopy is a promising tool for understanding the structure of hydrogels.
Illicit COVID-19 products online: A mixed-method approach for identifying and preventing online health risks
Aims
The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a demand for vaccines, cures, and the need of related documentation for travel, work and other purposes. Our project aimed to identify the illicit availability of such products across the Dark Web Markets (DWMs).
Methods
A retrospective search for COVID-19 related products was carried out across 118 DWMs since the start of the pandemic (March 2020-October 2021). Data on vendors as well as advertised goods such as asking price, marketplace, listed date were collected and further validated through additional searches on the open web to verify the information relating to specific marketplaces. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data analysis.
Results
Forty-two listings of unlicenced COVID-19 cures and vaccination certificates were identified across 8 marketplaces sold by 25 vendors with significant variation in prices. The listings were found to be geographically specific and followed the progression of the pandemic in terms of availability. Correlations between vendor portfolios of COVID-19 products and variety of goods of other illicit nature such as illegal weaponry, medication/drugs of abuse also emerged from our analysis.
Conclusion
This study is one of the first attempts to identify the availability of unlicenced COVID-19 products on DWMs. The easy accessibility to vaccines, fake test certificates and hypothetical/illegal cures poses serious health risks to (potential) buyers due to the uncontrolled nature of such products. It also exposes buyers to an unwanted contact with vendors selling a variety of other dangerous illicit goods. Further monitoring and regulatory responses should be implemented to protect the health and safety of citizens especially at times of global crisis
The natural compound climacostol as a prodrug strategy based on pH activation for efficient delivery of cytotoxic small agents
We synthesized and characterized MOMO as a new small molecule analog of the cytotoxic natural product climacostol efficiently activated in mild extracellular acidosis. The synthesis of MOMO had a key step in the Wittig olefination for the construction of the carbon-carbon double bond in the alkenyl moiety of climacostol. The possibility of obtaining the target (Z)-alkenyl MOMO derivative in very good yield and without presence of the less active (E)-diastereomer was favored from the methoxymethyl ether (MOM)-protecting group of hydroxyl functions in aromatic ring of climacostol aldehyde intermediate. Of interest, the easy removal of MOM-protecting group in a weakly acidic environment allowed us to obtain a great quantity of climacostol in biologically active (Z)-configuration. Results obtained in free-living ciliates that share the same micro-environment of the climacostol natural producer Climacostomum virens demonstrated that MOMO is well-tolerated in a physiological environment, while its cytotoxicity is rapidly and efficiently triggered at pH 6.3. In addition, the cytostatic vs. cytotoxic effects of acidified-MOMO can be modulated in a dose-dependent manner. In mouse melanoma cells, MOMO displayed a marked pH-sensitivity since its cytotoxic and apoptotic effects become evident only in mild extracellular acidosis. Data also suggested MOMO being preferentially activated in the unique extra-acidic microenvironment that characterizes tumoural cells. Finally, the use of the model organism Drosophila melanogaster fed with an acidic diet supported the efficient activity and oral delivery of MOMO molecule in vivo. MOMO affected oviposition of mating adults and larvae eclosion. Reduced survival of flies was due to lethality during the larval stages while emerging larvae retained their ability to develop into adults. Interestingly, the gut of eclosed larvae exhibited an extended damage (cell death by apoptosis) and the brain tissue was also affected (reduced mitosis), demonstrating that orally activated MOMO efficiently targets different tissues of the developing fly. These results provided a proof-of-concept study on the pH-dependence of MOMO effects. In this respect, MOM-protection emerges as a potential prodrug strategy which deserves to be further investigated for the generation of efficient pH-sensitive small organic molecules as pharmacologically active cytotoxic compounds
It's all about the children: a participant-driven photo-elicitation study of Mexican-origin mothers' food choices
Abstract Background There is a desperate need to address diet-related chronic diseases in Mexican-origin women, particularly for those in border region colonias (Mexican settlements) and other new destination communities in rural and non-rural areas of the U.S. Understanding the food choices of mothers, who lead food and health activities in their families, provides one way to improve health outcomes in Mexican-origin women and their children. This study used a visual method, participant-driven photo-elicitation, and grounded theory in a contextual study of food choices from the perspectives of Mexican-origin mothers. Methods Teams of trained promotoras (female community health workers from the area) collected all data in Spanish. Ten Mexican-origin mothers living in colonias in Hidalgo County, TX completed a creative photography assignment and an in-depth interview using their photographs as visual prompts and examples. English transcripts were coded inductively by hand, and initial observations emphasized the salience of mothers' food practices in their routine care-giving. This was explored further by coding transcripts in the qualitative data analysis software Atlas.ti. Results An inductive conceptual framework was created to provide context for understanding mothers' daily practices and their food practices in particular. Three themes emerged from the data: 1) a mother's primary orientation was toward her children; 2) leveraging resources to provide the best for her children; and 3) a mother's daily food practices kept her children happy, healthy, and well-fed. Results offer insight into the intricate meanings embedded in Mexican-origin mothers' routine food choices. Conclusions This paper provides a new perspective for understanding food choice through the eyes of mothers living in the colonias of South Texas -- one that emphasizes the importance of children in their routine food practices and the resilience of the mothers themselves. Additional research is needed to better understand mothers' perspectives and food practices with larger samples of women and among other socioeconomic groups
