Is it possible to export democracy by the use of force? This article deals with this question as applied to the NATO/U.S. military intervention in Libya, in 2011, during the Arab- Spring uprisings and its aftermath. We will test and refine the Foreign Imposed Regime Change (FIRC) model by using the qualitative methods of case study and process- tracing.  By doing this, we will be able to identify independent variables not anticipated by the FIRC model, unveiling the actual, very complex social-political cleavages of the country that hinder democratization and conduce to civil war.É possível exportar democracia pelo uso da força?

The article aims to deepen the discussion about the analysis of Brazilian foreign policy as a public policy. Without denying certain particularities of foreign policy, one can verify growing similarities between both areas since the inauguration of the Brazilian democratic regime in 1988. This new moment seems to be characterized by a progressive erosion of the proverbial "insulation" of Itamaraty as well as by an approximation of foreign policy to the interests of the Brazilian society.

Twenty years of neonatal screening for sickle cell disease in Brazil : the challenges of a continental country with high genetic heterogeneity

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited hematological disease worldwide. The benefits of diagnosis and early intervention have led to the wide dissemination of public health programs worldwide. Through neonatal screening programs, it is possible to reduce morbidity and mortality in the first 5 years of life. The prophylactic use of penicillin, the anti-pneumococcal vaccine and other intensive care, increase the survival and quality of life of people with SCD. The aim of this study is to present the 20-year history of screening for hemoglobinopathies in Brazil and its challenges. From 2001 to 2019, an average of 2,400,000 children were screened per year nationwide, with the coverage being of 82,16%. The screening of 54,9% of newborns is collected up to their 5th day of life. The prevalence of SCD was 1:2,263 newborns; therefore, it was the second most-common disease detected by the program of Brazil, being only after hypothyroidism (1/2,175 live births). The healthcare system should provide the necessary infrastructure to confirm the diagnosis of newborns and to provide appropriate counseling and treatment. The early diagnosis and treatment, as well as the follow-up with a multidisciplinary team, are fundamental to the survival rate and the quality of life of patients

Production and Characterization of Craft Beers with Addition of Campomanesia adamantium O. Berg Fruits and Leave

The increase in the consumption of craft beer is drawing attention to its characteristics. The search for compounds or products that increase stability and guarantee the quality of the beer is fundamental. Here is presented the preparation of two craft beers with the addition of aqueous extract of leaves or fruits of Campomanesia adamantium since this species is known for having a high antioxidant activity. Volatiles compounds and phenolic content, pH, colour and antioxidant action were determined for the samples. The results show that the alcohol content and the number of volatile compounds are on average for most beers. The sample prepared with C. adamantium fruits has a higher content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant potential, compared to the sample added with the aqueous extract of the leaves. Fruits of C. adamantium increased the antioxidant action of craft beers by 79.1%. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17807/orbital.v14i1.169

The influence of gait cadence on the ground reaction forces and plantar pressures during load carriage of young adults

    Get PDF
Biomechanical gait parameters ground reaction forces (GRFs) and plantar pressures during load carriage of young adults were compared at a low gait cadence and a high gait cadence. Differences between load carriage and normal walking during both gait cadences were also assessed. A force plate and an in-shoe plantar pressure system were used to assess 60 adults while they were walking either normally (unloaded condition) or wearing a backpack (loaded condition) at low (70 steps per minute) and high gait cadences (120 steps per minute). GRF and plantar pressure peaks were scaled to body weight (or body weight plus backpack weight). With medium to high effect sizes we found greater anterior-posterior and vertical GRFs and greater plantar pressure peaks in the rearfoot, forefoot and hallux when the participants walked carrying a backpack at high gait cadences compared to walking at low gait cadences. Differences between loaded and unloaded conditions in both gait cadences were also observed.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
