This paper refers to some higher level educational proposals for women in jail in the province of Mendoza. Though some of the restrictions that these women have to face are related to university level learning, the limitations relate mainly to the rights of women to education. Each accomplishment is accompanied by relegations or postponements because they are earned after men in prison get them.Fil: Castiglia, Mariana Laura. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Blood group does not appear to affect longevity a pilot study in centenarians from Western Sicily

Centenarians are the best example of extreme human longevity, and they represent a selected population in which the appearance of major age-related diseases, such as cancer, and cardiovascular diseases among others, has been consistently delayed or escaped. The study of the long-lived individual genetic profile has the purpose to possibly identify the genes and the allelic variations influencing extended life expectancy, hence considering them as biomarkers of age-related diseases onset and development. The present study shows no significant differences between allelic variations of ABO blood groups among a group of centenarians from Western Sicily

Introductive note A wide literature on Streptococcus Pneumoniae (Pn) infections is available, largely published in the recent years, after the introduction of the heptavalent conjugate vaccine in US and in Europe. This review is based on the most up-to-date scientific articles about this pathogen

No association between candidate genes for color determination and color phenotype in Hierophis viridiflavus, and characterization of a contact zone

Genetic and phenotypic differentiation in allopatric conditions can be explained either by neutral phenomena or adaptative processes driven by selection. In reptiles, coloration can affect aspects directly related to their survival, representing a classical character under selection. In this context, secondary contact areas are natural laboratory to understand evolutionary processes underlying genetic permeability, especially when populations differ in phenotypic traits such as coloration. The western whip snake Hierophis viridiflavus presents two divergent mitochondrial clades, characterized by the presence of one of two main color phenotypes, namely one with black and yellow stripes and a fully melanic one. Here, we investigated whether melanogenesis-linked genes are determinant of the chromatic differences observed across the phenotypic variation of the species. In addition, we used a multilocus dataset, including 134 original ND4 sequences, to better define the overall genetic structure and to provide a characterization of a contact zone identified in Central Italy by estimating the amount of nuclear gene exchange. While we found no evidence supporting a direct association between target genes and coloration, a non-synonymous substitution polymorphism, at high frequency, was detected in the β melanocyte-stimulating hormone whose possible function has been discussed. Concerning the genetic structure, both mtDNA and nuDNA were partly concordant indicating introgression events occurring at the contact zone. When we measured the nuclear gene flow, we found a significant amount of gene exchange, mainly guided from one clade to the other, that is, asymmetric. These results might suggest the presence of ecological and/or behavioral processes driving the observed directional gene flow

Caries experience among adolescents in southeast Italy

Abstract Background/purpose According to WHO recommendations, 12-year-olds are considered an important target group for evaluating the level of dental caries among children with permanent teeth, and are often chosen for international comparisons. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the current oral health status of 12-year-old children in southeast Italy, stratified by gender and residential area. Materials and methods The survey was conducted on 431 children enrolled by multistage cluster sampling. A dental caries experience index (decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth; DMFT) was recorded at schools by a team of examiners trained at the start of the study. Statistical analyses by Chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Wilcoxon tests were performed using SAS version 9.1 software for PCs. We applied the Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial regression model in the STATA package. Results Caries prevalence was recorded in 38.3% of the sample. Estimated means and 95% confidence intervals of the DMFT index by gender were: 1.15 (0.91–1.39) for males, 1.26 (1.02–1.5) for females, and 1.21 (1.03–1.39) for the total sample. The D component of the index was dominant. The mean number of caries found in southeast Italy was significantly higher than the national mean ( t =3.125, P=0.002), but significantly lower than the mean for south Italy ( t =−2.125, P=0.03). Results of the regression model showed that only the mother and father's nationality and educational level contributed to the DMFT. Conclusions The oral health situation of 12-year-old children from southeast Italy seems to be in line with that in other Western European countries

Cytokine-Induced Killer (CIK) Cells, In Vitro Expanded under Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) Conditions, Remain Stable over Time after Cryopreservation

Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are advanced therapy medicinal products, so their production and freezing process has to be validated before their clinical use, to verify their stability as a drug formulation according to the good manufacturing practice (GMP) guidelines. We designed a stability program for our GMP-manufactured CIK cells, evaluating the viability, identity and potency of cryopreserved CIK cells at varying time periods from freezing, and compared them with fresh CIK cells. We evaluated the effects of the cryopreservation method, transportation, and the length of time of different process phases (pre-freezing, freezing and post-thawing) on the stability of CIK cells. This included a worst case for each stage. The expanded CIK cells were viable for up to 30 min from the addition of the freezing solution, when transported on dry ice within 48 h once frozen, within 60 min from thawing and from 12 months of freezing while preserving their cytotoxic effects. The reference samples, cryopreserved simultaneously in tubes and following the same method, were considered representative of the batch and useful in the case of further analysis. Data obtained from this drug stability program can inform the accurate use of CIK cells in clinical settings
