“Lisboa dos Italianos”: presença italiana e práticas de nacionalidade nos primeiros trinta anos do século XIX

A cidade de Lisboa tem registado desde o século XV uma importante presença italiana, ligada às práticas comerciais e financeiras, e organizada nas “nações” de mercadores florentinos, genoveses e venezianos. Com o processo de “italianização” que afeta o país a partir de meados do século XVIII, mudar-se-á a composição da própria comunidade italiana. Esta acolhe cada vez mais pessoas, num processo de diversificação das atividades socioeconómicas. Também muda a perceção das instituições e da sociedade portuguesa em relação a esta presença. A partir de então projeta-se a imagem duma “nação italiana” única, coesa em torno de elementos identitários comuns. Perfila-se um grupo homogéneo, que nas relações sociais (formais e informais) é reconhecido pelo ambiente que a acolhe, e que, ao mesmo tempo, desenvolve processos de autoidentificação (práticas de nacionalidade). Esta dinâmica projeta na primeira metade de Oitocentos uma comunidade (italianos e luso-italianos) que é corpo vivo da cidade, tendo um papel muito ativo sobretudo em três sectores: artes, ciências e comércio.

A historiografia italiana sobre Portugal na primeira metade do século XIX

In the first half of the 19th century, historians from the Italian Peninsula revived the interest in the history of what was at the time the kingdom of Portugal, as it had never happened before. Namely, the political events that took place in the Iberian Peninsula in the 1820-23 triennium, together with the memory of the recent anti-French vicissitudes, clearly contribute (albeit with different attitudes) to arouse Italian interest in that geographic space in general, and in Portugal in particular, leading the most different historians (concerning their education and scientific value) to invade the rugged terrain of the narration of the Portuguese nation. The interest will grow, defining a complex bibliography that follows the historical development of the two areas, until reaching the middle of the century with works of famous authorship and rigorous structuring, which aim to build parallels between history and politics. On the other hand, the ancient history of the Portuguese nation becomes a reference to look at a time when a nation was looking for in the Italian peninsula itself. The following study aims to offer an overview of the attention given to Portugal by Italian historical studies in the indicated historical period, highlighting the methodological and interpretative problems found in the referenced works, and profiling the different historiographic perspectivesNa primeira metade do século XIX reaviva-se o interesse dos historiadores de cultura itálica para  história do então reino de Portugal, como nunca tinha acontecido antes. Nomeadamente, os acontecimentos políticos ocorridos na península ibérica no triénio de 1820-23, conjuntamente com a memória das recentes vicissitudes antifrancesas, contribuem de maneira evidente (embora com atitudes diferentes) para despertar o interesse italiano por aquele espaço geográfico em geral, e por Portugal em particular, levando os mais diferentes historiadores (em formação e valor científico) a invadir o terreno acidentado da narração da nação lusitana. O interesse irá crescendo, definindo uma bibliografia complexa que acompanha o desenvolvimento histórico das duas áreas, até chegar ao meio curso do século com trabalhos de célebre autoria e rigorosa estruturação, que visam construir paralelos entre história e política. Por outro lado, a história secular da nação portuguesa torna-se referência a olhar numa altura em que uma nação se ia buscando na própria península itálica. O seguente estudo visa oferecer uma panorâmica sobre a atenção dada a Portugal pelos estudos históricos italianos no périodo histórico indicado, ressaltando as problemáticas metodológicas e interpretativas presentes nas obras referenciadas, e perfilando as diferentes perspetivas historiográficas
