Charge orders, magnetism and pairings in the cuprate superconductors

We review the recent developments in the field of cuprate superconductors with the special focus on the recently observed charge order in the underdoped compounds. We introduce new theoretical developments following the study of the antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) in two dimensions, in which preemptive orders in the charge and superconducting (SC) sectors emerged, that are in turn related by an SU(2) symmetry. We consider the implications of this proliferation of orders in the underdoped region, and provide a study of the type of fluctuations which characterize the SU(2) symmetry. We identify an intermediate energy scale where the SU(2) pairing fluctuations are dominant and argue that they are unstable towards the formation of a Resonant Peierls Excitonic (RPE) state at the pseudogap (PG) temperature TT^{*}. We discuss the implications of this scenario for a few key experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figure

Understanding the impact of school´s ethnic composition on Mathematics results of students with immigrant origin in primary school

Scientific interest concerning the impact of school’s compositional effect on student performance has intensified throughout the current century, as the subject has been vastly explored by researchers in various national contexts (Agirdag, Van Houtte & Van Avermaet, 2012; Jensen & Rasmussen, 2011; Van der Slik, Driessen & De Bot, 2006; Schnepf, 2007; Goldsmith, 2003, Lleras, 2008). These effects have usually been studied taking student outcomes as measured by standardised tests on different school subjects and levels of education. In Portugal we conducted a research using an extensive database (16 269 students and 417 schools) with the results of fourth grade students on Portuguese Language national standardised tests in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (2009-10). We intent to reveal what are the main factors behind students results in public schools giving special attention to the effect of ethnicity, considered both at the student level (its national origin) and at the school level (the schools ethnic composition). A multilevel analysis was developed involving both individual level variables and school level variables to answer the following research questions: Does the schools’ ethnic composition effect on Portuguese Language scores stand when students’ gender, social and ethnic origins are taken into account? Does this effect stand when the schools’ social composition is taken into account? How does the schools’ ethnic composition moderate the relation between having/not having an immigrant background and students’ Portuguese Language scores, when the socio-economic status (SES) of both students and schools is controlled?info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

On central tendency and dispersion measures for intervals and hypercubes

The uncertainty or the variability of the data may be treated by considering, rather than a single value for each data, the interval of values in which it may fall. This paper studies the derivation of basic description statistics for interval-valued datasets. We propose a geometrical approach in the determination of summary statistics (central tendency and dispersion measures) for interval-valued variables

Improving the Knowledge on Seismogenic Sources in the Lower Tagus Valley for Seismic Hazard Purposes

The Lower Tagus Valley, that includes the metropolitan area of Lisbon, has been struck by several earthquakes which produced significant material damage and loss of lives. Their exact location remains unknown. Our goal is to shed some light into the seismogenic sources in the area using seismic reflection and geological data. In areas with no seismic coverage, potential-field data interpretation was carried out. Seismicity was overlaid to the potential seismogenic structures and high-resolution data was acquired in order to confirm which structures have been active into the Quaternary. Three major fault-zones affecting the Neogene were identified: V. F. Xira, Samora-Alcochete and Pinhal Novo. For the first fault, strong evidences suggest it is active. The other two fault-zones and other structures previously unknown can be correlated with several epicentres. Empirical relationships between maximum moment magnitude and fault area indicate that MW > 6.5 earthquakes can be expected for the larger structures

Metatarsal Salmonella enteritidis osteomyelitis in a healthy child

Non-typhoidal Salmonella osteomyelitis in healthy children is a very rare condition. A previously healthy 7-year-old boy presented with foot pain following a small injury. Local inflammatory signs of the foot were observed, with a normal radiograph. Two weeks before, he had had gastroenteritis. Assuming cellulitis, flucloxacillin was began. Early during admission, surgical subcutaneous abscess drainage was performed and Salmonella enteritidis was identified. According to bacterial susceptibility, antibiotherapy was changed to ceftriaxone. A foot radiograph and an MRI scan, performed on the 9th and the 12th days, revealed findings suggestive of osteomyelitis of the metaphysis of the fifth metatarsal. Clinical worsening persisted and surgical extensive debridement was needed. A 6-week antibiotic treatment was completed, with a good outcome. Osteomyelitis with a poor evolution in children with risk factors (prior gastrointestinal illness, warm weather and previous exposure to antibiotics) can raise the possibility of a non-typhoidal Salmonella infection.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
