    Get PDF
Bell's palsy is a neuropathy of the peripheral seventh cranial nerve, resulting from traumatic, compressive, infective, inflammatory or metabolic abnormalities or it can be idiopathic. HIV, Epstein-Barr virus and hepatitis B virus have been suspected as initiating organisms, but herpes simplex virus is the most frequently implicated. This report describes 2 cases of Bell's palsy in children that were managed with antiviral agents. Both patients experienced complete recovery within 28 days; after 1 year follow-up, no recurrence was observed and both patients have normal facial movement. Differential diagnosis is essential to guide the treatment plan in Bell's palsy. Special attention should be given to children with respect to prescription of medications that can cause important side effects

Oral myiasis is a rare parasitic disease that requires immediate treatment once diagnosed. However, no standard treatment protocol can be found in the literature. Through a clinical-surgical report, we present the case of an 82-year-old man with lesions extending through the vestibule and alveolar ridge of the maxilla on both sides, in addition to occupying a large part of the palate, with a considerable number of larvae. The patient was initially treated with a single dose of systemic ivermectin (6 mg orally) and topical application of a tampon soaked in ether. The larvae were then surgically removed and debridement of the wound was performed. A crushed tablet of ivermectin 6 mg was applied topically for 2 days, the remaining larvae were again mechanically removed, and the patient received intravenous antimicrobial therapy. Treatment with systemic and topical ivermectin combined with antibiotic therapy and debridement proved to be effective in treating oral myiasis

Prostate cancer represents the most frequent non-cutaneous neoplasia in males. This type of neoplasia can develop peculiar patterns of evolution, presenting, in many cases, precocious relapses and metastasis. Bone metastasis in the mouth is extremely rare, and represents 1% of all malignant mouth neoplasias. The aim of the present study is to report a clinical case of bone metastasis in the mandibular region associated with a tumoral prostate adenocarcinoma, as well as to discuss connected aspects about diagnosis, prognosis and integrated treatment of this condition

The relationship between work and health conditions or disease of human beings has been established since antiquity. Such relationship between work and illness, and also the individual health, is directly linked to the health of a population. Thus, occupational health is directly related to the workers welfare, productivity and quality of life. Conceptualizing up absenteeism as the chronic absence from work or other obligations, this absenteeism could be split in type I, which is the absence from work due to illness, or type II, which is the presence, but with low productive capacity and lack of concentration. Absenteeism originating from dental diseases has been reported as being responsible for uncountable hours lost that reflect in economic damage to companies both private and public. Given the scarcity of research on the subject, it is proposed, in this study, an epidemiological survey, in order to discern a clear picture of the relationship between absenteeism and oral and facial diseases related to the dentistry interest. Therefore, we chose to profile the Absenteeism in Public Administration. The strategy involved a sample of 340 medical functional records of municipal civil servants at a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, from an universe of 973 active servers, which was subjected to a 11 years and 5 months cross-sectional retrospective comprising January 2001 to May 2012, through Medical and Dental History analysis harvested from dental and medical certificates about absences or non-working periods, being these legal documents the proof of the reason for absenteeism. The collected data were analyzed statistically relevant trying to provide subsidies for discussion and work completion, raising issues to be analyzed and subsequently reported to the municipal administration, as a suggestion for improving the quality of life and health of the server within the work environment, contributing to reduce absenteeism and increase productivity, and consequent increase in the quality of public service delivery

Facial injuries with the retention of foreign bodies inside the tissues, both in soft and hard ones, can cause major functional and aesthetic damage. Among the different etiological agents, cutting tools, fragments of a firearm, the splinter of wood, steel, or iron, launched by misuse, or even caused by defects in equipment, are the main cause of these injuries. The aim of this study was to discuss the peculiarity of the multidisciplinary approach in caring of a 33-year-old man, victim of an accident at work, by the rupture of an emery disc and consequent penetration of the fragments in violation of the tissues in the orbital and zygomatic region of the left side, with perforation of the eyeball and orbital-zygomatic fracture. Urgent treatment consisted of debridement of wounds, bleeding control, removal of foreign bodies, fracture reduction with rigid internal fixation, and suture, performed by the oral and maxillofacial surgical team. Reconstruction of orbital tissues by the ophthalmology team consisted of suture of the injuries. About 1 month after the trauma, phthisis bulbi was noted, and the patient underwent a new procedure under general anesthesia for eye evisceration and installation of an alloplastic prosthesis associated with the homogenous sclera. Facial harmony was restored, especially in aesthetics and function of the zygomatic-orbital complex
