Report of the first Nimbus-7 SMMR Experiment Team Workshop
Preliminary results of sea ice and techniques for calculating sea ice concentration and multiyear fraction from the microwave radiances obtained from the Nimbus-7 SMMR were presented. From these results, it is evident that these groups used different and independent approaches in deriving sea ice emissivities and algorithms. This precluded precise comparisons of their results. A common set of sea ice emissivities were defined for all groups to use for subsequent more careful comparison of the results from the various sea ice parameter algorithms. To this end, three different geographical areas in two different time intervals were defined as typifying SMMR beam-filling conditions for first year sea ice, multiyear sea ice, and open water and to be used for determining the required microwave emissivities
Technology for satellite power conversion
The work is this reporting period was concentrated on electronically calibrating the bolometer detectors. The calibration is necessary for two reasons: first, the power delivered to the rectifying circuit must be known in order to choose a diode with the appropriate barrier height, and second, the power captured by the antenna must be measured if the efficiency of the rectenna is to be divided into antenna efficiency and rectification efficiency. The millimeter wave region operation of the bolometers was simulated with a VHF (10 to 90 MHz) test signal. These detectors are accurate to within roughly 10%. The typical responsivity of the bolometers is 10 volts/watt and the NEP at 20 Hz is 5 times 10 to the minus 9th power W(Hz)-1/2
Technology for satellite power conversion
The work performed in this reporting period has concentrated on the metal-oxide-metal (MOM) diode. The fabrication procedure begins with the deposition of gold probing pads to provide a non-oxidizing contact to test the dc characteristics to the diode accurately. A thin patch capped with an insulating SiO2 layer, is deposited next to form the first half of the diode. The other half of the diode, typically Ni, is deposited completing the conduction path from the oxidized edge of the Ni patch to the opposite gold probing pad. It is important in this step that the last metallization take place without exposing the newly oxidized surface to the atmosphere. Successful production of diodes has been achieved. Work on millimeter wave frequency rectennas incorporating known semiconductor diode technology has been initiated
Technology for satellite power conversion
Components were examined that will be needed for high frequency rectenna devices. The majority of the effort was spent on measuring the directivity and efficiency of the half-wave dipole antenna. It is felt that the antenna and diode should be roughly optimized before they are combined into a rectenna structure. An integrated low pass filter had to be added to the antenna structure in order to facilitate the field pattern measurements. A calculation was also made of the power density of the Earth's radiant energy as seen by satellites in Earth orbit. Finally, the feasibility of using a Metal-Oxide-Metal (MOM) diode for rectification of the received power was assessed

Internal dissipation of a polymer
The dynamics of flexible polymer molecules are often assumed to be governed
by hydrodynamics of the solvent. However there is considerable evidence that
internal dissipation of a polymer contributes as well. Here we investigate the
dynamics of a single chain in the absence of solvent to characterize the nature
of this internal friction. We model the chains as freely hinged but with
localized bond angles and 3-fold symmetric dihedral angles. We show that the
damping is close but not identical to Kelvin damping, which depends on the
first temporal and second spatial derivative of monomer position. With no
internal potential between monomers, the magnitude of the damping is small for
long wavelengths and weakly damped oscillatory time dependent behavior is seen
for a large range of spatial modes. When the size of the internal potential is
increased, such oscillations persist, but the damping becomes larger. However
underdamped motion is present even with quite strong dihedral barriers for long
enough wavelengths.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Histidine nutrition and genotype affect cataract development in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of dietary levels of histidine (His) and iron (Fe) on cataract development in two strains of Atlantic salmon monitored through parr-smolt transformation. Three experimental diets were fed: (i) a control diet (CD) with 110 mg kg-1 Fe and 11.7 g kg-1 His; (ii) CD supplemented with crystalline His to a level of 18 g kg-1 (HD); and (iii) HD with added iron up to 220 mg kg-1 (HID). A cross-over design, with two feeding periods was used. A 6-week freshwater (FW) period was followed by a 20-week period, of which the first three were in FW and the following 17 weeks in sea water (SW). Fish were sampled for weighing, cataract assessment and tissue analysis at five time points. Cataracts developed in all groups in SW, but scores were lower in those fed high His diets (P < 0.05). This effect was most pronounced when HD or HID was given in SW, but was also observed when these diets were given in FW only. Histidine supplementation had a positive effect on growth performance and feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05), whereas this did not occur when iron was added. Groups fed HD or HID had higher lens levels of His and N-acetyl histidine (NAH), the latter showing a marked increase post-smoltification (P < 0.05). The HD or HID groups also showed higher muscle concentrations of the His dipeptide anserine (P < 0.05). There was a strong genetic influence on cataract development in the CD groups (P < 0.001), not associated with tissue levels of His or NAH. The role of His and His-related compounds in cataractogenesis is discussed in relation to tissue buffering, osmoregulation and antioxidation
