Planetary body high resolution 3D model of terrain Final report

Interplanetary space missions require vision techniques for the description of target objects, mission planning, and navigation. The three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of a planetary body surface based on multiple views of the scene is one of the passive sensing techniques which can be used. The creation of a digital planetary high resolution model of terrain (DEM) is the major requirement of such a vision system used in the interplanetary environment. This report reviews the existing body of knowledge in the field of stereovision and automatic terrain modeling. It contains algorithmic suggestions for solving the reconstruction problem and points out the breakpoints and possible solutions for the DEM creation process in the orbit, at landing and after landing. Imaging and additional sensing techniques are covered and by describing solutions for the natural feature tracking the navigation problem is approached. Examples using a laboratory mock-up verify the algorithms proposed for the mentioned imaging techniques. Finally it contains the software documentation in terms of algorithmic description, functional description, and user manual of the software test bed for evaluating and validating algorithms.
