    Inclusive Quasi-Elastic Charged-Current Neutrino-Nucleus Reactions

    The Quasi-Elastic (QE) contribution of the nuclear inclusive electron scattering model developed in Nucl. Phys. A627 (1997) 543 is extended to the study of electroweak Charged Current (CC) induced nuclear reactions, at intermediate energies of interest for future neutrino oscillation experiments. The model accounts for, among other nuclear effects, long range nuclear (RPA) correlations, Final State Interaction (FSI) and Coulomb corrections. Predictions for the inclusive muon capture in 12^{12}C and the reaction 12^{12}C (νμ,μ)X(\nu_\mu,\mu^-)X near threshold are also given. RPA correlations are shown to play a crucial role and their inclusion leads to one of the best existing simultaneous description of both processes, with accuracies of the order of 10-15% per cent for the muon capture rate and even better for the LSND measurement.Comment: 31 pages and 14 figures, accepted for publication as a regular article in Physical Review

    First electron beam polarization measurements with a Compton polarimeter at Jefferson Laboratory

    A Compton polarimeter has been installed in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory. This letter reports on the first electron beam polarization measurements performed during the HAPPEX experiment at an electron energy of 3.3 GeV and an average current of 40 μ\muA. The heart of this device is a Fabry-Perot cavity which increased the luminosity for Compton scattering in the interaction region so much that a 1.4% statistical accuracy could be obtained within one hour, with a 3.3% total error

    Updated results of the experiment E94-107 hypernuclear spectroscopy in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), are presented. The experiment provides high resolution spectra of excitation energy for 12B_\Lambda, 16N_\Lambda, and 9Li_\Lambda hypernuclei obtained by electroproduction of strangeness. A new theoretical calculation for 12B_\Lambda, final results for 16N_\Lambda, and discussion of the preliminary results of 9Li_\Lambda are reported.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to the proceedings of Hyp-X Conferenc

    The Glauber model and the heavy ion reaction cross section

    We reexamine the Glauber model and calculate the total reaction cross section as a function of energy in the low and intermediate energy range, where many of the corrections in the model, are effective. The most significant effect in this energy range is by the modification of the trajectory due to the Coulomb field. The modification in the trajectory due to nuclear field is also taken into account in a self consistent way. The energy ranges in which particular corrections are effective, are quantified and it is found that when the center of mass energy of the system becomes 30 times the Coulomb barrier, none of the trajectory modification to the Glauber model is really required. The reaction cross sections for light and heavy systems, right from near coulomb barrier to intermediate energies have been calculated. The exact nuclear densities and free nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections have been used in the calculations. The center of mass correction which is important for light systems, has also been taken into account. There is an excellent agreement between the calculations with the modified Glauber model and the experimental data. This suggests that the heavy ion reactions in this energy range can be explained by the Glauber model in terms of free NN cross sections without incorporating any medium modification.Comment: RevTeX, 21 pages including 9 Postscript figures, submitted to Phys.     The Nuclear Sigma Term in the Skyrme Model: Pion-Nucleus Interaction

    The nuclear sigma term is calculated including the nuclear matrix element of the derivative of the NN interaction with respect to the quark mass, mqVNNmqm_q\frac{\partial V_{NN}}{\partial m_q}. The NN potential is evaluated in the skyrmion-skyrmion picture within the quantized product ansatz. The contribution of the NN potential to the nuclear sigma term provides repulsion to the pion-nucleus interaction. The strength of the s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential is estimated including such contribution.     Why is the J/ψ\psi suppression enhanced at large transverse energy ?

    We study the ratio of J/ψJ/\psi over minimum bias in PbPb PbPb collisions at SPS energy. The NA50 data exhibit a sharp turn-over at ET100E_T \sim 100 GeV (close to the knee of the ETE_T distribution) followed by a steady, steep decrease at larger ETE_T. We show that this behaviour can be explained by the combined effects of a small decrease of the hadronic ETE_T in the J/ψJ/\psi event sample (due to the ETE_T taken by the J/ψJ/\psi trigger), together with the sharp decrease of the ETE_T distributions in this ETE_T region (tail). This phenomenon does not affect the (true) ratio J/ψJ/\psi over DYDY (obtained by the NA50 standard analysis), but does affect the one obtained by the so-called minimum bias analysis. A good agreement is obtained with the data coming from both analysis -- as well as with the ratios of J/ψJ/\psi and DYDY over minimum bias -- in the whole ETE_{T} region.Comment: 20 pages, 4 postscript figures One modified equation and one added table.     Changes in perfusion, and structure of hippocampal subfields related to cognitive impairment after ECT: A pilot study using ultra high field MRI

    Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with major depression is associated with volume changes and markers of neuroplasticity in the hippocampus, in particular in the dentate gyrus. It is unclear if these changes are associated with cognitive side effects. Objectives: We investigated whether changes in cognitive functioning after ECT were associated with hippocampal structural changes. It was hypothesized that 1) volume increase of hippocampal subfields and 2) changes in perfusion and diffusion of the hippocampus correlated with cognitive decline. Methods: Using ultra high field (7 T) MRI, intravoxel incoherent motion and volumetric data were acquired and neurocognitive functioning was assessed before and after ECT in 23 patients with major depression. Repeated measures correlation analysis was used to examine the relation between cognitive functioning and structural characteristics of the hippocampus. Results: Left hippocampal volume, left and right dentate gyrus and right CA1 volume increase correlated with decreases in verbal memory functioning. In addition, a decrease of mean diffusivity in the left hippocampus correlated with a decrease in letter fluency. Limitations: Due to methodological restrictions direct study of neuroplasticity is not possible. MRI is used as an indirect measure. Conclusion: As both volume increase in the hippocampus and MD decrease can be interpreted as indirect markers for neuroplasticity that co-occur with a decrease in cognitive functioning, our results may indicate that neuroplastic processes are affecting cognitive processes after ECT

    J/Psi suppression in colliding nuclei: statistical model analysis

    We consider the J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression at a high energy heavy ion collision. An ideal gas of massive hadrons in thermal and chemical equilibrium is formed in the central region. The finite-size gas expands longitudinally in accordance with Bjorken law. The transverse expansion in a form of the rarefaction wave is taken into account. We show that J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression in such an environment, when combined with the disintegration in nuclear matter, gives correct evaluation of NA38 and NA50 data in a broad range of initial energy densities.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures.
