Dominance of gauge artifact in the consistency relation for the primordial bispectrum
The conventional cosmological perturbation theory has been performed under
the assumption that we know the whole spatial region of the universe with
infinite volume. This is, however, not the case in the actual observations
because observable portion of the universe is limited. To give a theoretical
prediction to the observable fluctuations, gauge-invariant observables should
be composed of the information in our local observable universe with finite
volume. From this point of view, we reexamine the primordial non-Gaussianity in
single field models, focusing on the bispectrum in the squeezed limit. A
conventional prediction states that the bispectrum in this limit is related to
the power spectrum through the so-called consistency relation. However, it
turns out that, if we adopt a genuine gauge invariant variable which is
naturally composed purely of the information in our local universe, the leading
term for the bispectrum in the squeezed limit predicted by the consistency
relation vanishes.Comment: 12 pages; v2: accepted version in JCA
Signatures of non-gaussianity in the isocurvature modes of primordial black hole dark matter
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are black holes which may have formed very
early on during the radiation dominated era in the early universe. We present
here a method by which the large scale perturbations in the density of
primordial black holes may be used to place tight constraints on
non-gaussianity if PBHs account for dark matter (DM). The presence of
local-type non-gaussianity is known to have a significant effect on the
abundance of primordial black holes, and modal coupling from the observed CMB
scale modes can significantly alter the number density of PBHs that form within
different regions of the universe, which appear as DM isocurvature modes. Using
the recent \emph{Planck} constraints on isocurvature perturbations, we show
that PBHs are excluded as DM candidates for even very small local-type
non-gaussianity, and remarkably the constraint on
is almost as strong. Even small non-gaussianity is excluded if DM is
composed of PBHs. If local non-Gaussianity is ever detected on CMB scales, the
constraints on the fraction of the universe collapsing into PBHs (which are
massive enough to have not yet evaporated) will become much tighter.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. V2: minor corrections and changes, matches

Evaluation of dynamic behaviour of porous media including micro-cracks by ordinary state-based peridynamics
Reliable evaluation of mechanical response in a porous solid might be challenging without any simplified assumptions. Peridynamics (PD) perform very well on a medium including pores owing to its definition, which is valid for entire domain regardless of any existed discontinuities. Accordingly, porosity is defined by randomly removing the PD interactions between the material points. As wave propagation in a solid body can be regarded as an indication of the material properties, wave propagation in porous media under an impact loading is studied first and average wave speeds are compared with the available reference results. A good agreement between the present and the reference results is achieved. Then, micro-cracks are introduced into porous media to investigate their influence on the elastic wave propagation. The micro-cracks are considered in both random and regular patterns by varying the number of cracks and their orientation. As the porosity ratio increases, it is observed that wave propagation speed drops considerably as expected. As for the cases with micro-cracks, the average wave speeds are not influenced significantly in random micro-crack configurations, while regular micro-cracks play a noticeable role in absorbing wave propagation depending on their orientation as well as the number of crack arrays in y-direction
Issues Concerning Loop Corrections to the Primordial Power Spectra
We expound ten principles in an attempt to clarify the debate over infrared
loop corrections to the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra from
inflation. Among other things we note that existing proposals for nonlinear
extensions of the scalar fluctuation field introduce new ultraviolet
divergences which no one understands how to renormalize. Loop corrections and
higher correlators of these putative observables would also be enhanced by
inverse powers of the slow roll parameter . We propose an extension
which should be better behaved.Comment: 36 pages, uses LaTeX2e, version 3 revised for publication with a much
expanded section 4, proving that our proposed extension of the zeta-zeta
correlator absorbs the one loop infrared divergences from graviton
Gravitational Lensing by Black Holes
We review the theoretical aspects of gravitational lensing by black holes,
and discuss the perspectives for realistic observations. We will first treat
lensing by spherically symmetric black holes, in which the formation of
infinite sequences of higher order images emerges in the clearest way. We will
then consider the effects of the spin of the black hole, with the formation of
giant higher order caustics and multiple images. Finally, we will consider the
perspectives for observations of black hole lensing, from the detection of
secondary images of stellar sources and spots on the accretion disk to the
interpretation of iron K-lines and direct imaging of the shadow of the black
hole.Comment: Invited article for the GRG special issue on lensing (P. Jetzer, Y.

Origin and Properties of the Gap in the Half-Ferromagnetic Heusler Alloys
We study the origin of the gap and the role of chemical composition in the
half-ferromagnetic Heusler alloys using the full-potential screened KKR method.
In the paramagnetic phase the C1_b compounds, like NiMnSb, present a gap.
Systems with 18 valence electrons, Z_t, per unit cell, like CoTiSb, are
semiconductors, but when Z_t > 18 antibonding states are also populated, thus
the paramagnetic phase becomes unstable and the half-ferromagnetic one is
stabilized. The minority occupied bands accommodate a total of nine electrons
and the total magnetic moment per unit cell in mu_B is just the difference
between Z_t and . While the substitution of the transition metal
atoms may preserve the half-ferromagnetic character, substituting the atom
results in a practically rigid shift of the bands and the loss of
half-metallicity. Finally we show that expanding or contracting the lattice
parameter by 2% preserves the minority-spin gap.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures New figures, revised tex
Black Hole Spin via Continuum Fitting and the Role of Spin in Powering Transient Jets
The spins of ten stellar black holes have been measured using the
continuum-fitting method. These black holes are located in two distinct classes
of X-ray binary systems, one that is persistently X-ray bright and another that
is transient. Both the persistent and transient black holes remain for long
periods in a state where their spectra are dominated by a thermal accretion
disk component. The spin of a black hole of known mass and distance can be
measured by fitting this thermal continuum spectrum to the thin-disk model of
Novikov and Thorne; the key fit parameter is the radius of the inner edge of
the black hole's accretion disk. Strong observational and theoretical evidence
links the inner-disk radius to the radius of the innermost stable circular
orbit, which is trivially related to the dimensionless spin parameter a_* of
the black hole (|a_*| < 1). The ten spins that have so far been measured by
this continuum-fitting method range widely from a_* \approx 0 to a_* > 0.95.
The robustness of the method is demonstrated by the dozens or hundreds of
independent and consistent measurements of spin that have been obtained for
several black holes, and through careful consideration of many sources of
systematic error. Among the results discussed is a dichotomy between the
transient and persistent black holes; the latter have higher spins and larger
masses. Also discussed is recently discovered evidence in the transient sources
for a correlation between the power of ballistic jets and black hole spin.Comment: 30 pages. Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews. Also to

Growth and properties of strained VOx thin films with controlled stoichiometry
We have succeeded in growing epitaxial films of rocksalt VOx on MgO(001)
substrates. The oxygen content as a function of oxygen flux was determined
using 18O2-RBS and the vanadium valence using XAS. The upper and lower
stoichiometry limits found are similar to the ones known for bulk material
(0.8<x<1.3). From the RHEED oscillation period a large number of vacancies for
both vanadium and oxygen were deduced, i.e. ~16% for stoichiometric VO. These
numbers are, surprisingly, very similar to those for bulk material and
consequently quite strain-insensitive. XAS measurements reveal that the
vacancies give rise to strong low symmetry ligand fields to be present. The
electrical conductivity of the films is much lower than the conductivity of
bulk samples which we attribute to a decrease in the direct overlap between t2g
orbitals in the coherently strained layers. The temperature dependence of the
conductivity is consistent with a variable range hopping mechanism.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures included, revised versio
