    Edoxaban vs. warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation on amiodarone: a subgroup analysis of the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 trial

    Background In the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 trial, the higher-dose edoxaban (HDE) regimen had a similar incidence of ischaemic stroke compared with warfarin, whereas a higher incidence was observed with the lower-dose regimen (LDE). Amiodarone increases edoxaban plasma levels via P-glycoprotein inhibition. The current pre-specified exploratory analysis was performed to determine the effect of amiodarone on the relative efficacy and safety profile of edoxaban. Methods and results At randomization, 2492 patients (11.8%) were receiving amiodarone. The primary efficacy endpoint of stroke or systemic embolic event was significantly lower with LDE compared with warfarin in amiodarone treated patients vs. patients not on amiodarone (hazard ratio [HR] 0.60, 95% confidence intervals [CIs] 0.36-0.99 and HR 1.20, 95% CI 1.03-1.40, respectively; P interaction <0.01). In patients randomized to HDE, no such interaction for efficacy was observed (HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.46-1.17 vs. HR 0.89, 95% CI 0.75-1.05, P interaction = 0.446). Major bleeding was similar in patients on LDE (HR 0.35, 95% CI 0.21-0.59 vs. HR 0.53, 95% CI 0.46-0.61, P interaction = 0.131) and HDE (HR 0.94, 95% CI 0.65-1.38 vs. HR 0.79, 95% CI 0.69-0.90, P interaction = 0.392) when compared with warfarin, independent of amiodarone use. Conclusions Patients randomized to the LDE treated with amiodarone at the time of randomization demonstrated a significant reduction in ischaemic events vs. warfarin when compared with those not on amiodarone, while preserving a favourable bleeding profile. When the Ta concentration is less than 14%, σ does not interfere with the slip mechanism; when the Ta concentration is more than 15%, σ interferes with the slip mechanism. The coherent α-Co 3Ta phase forms at Ta concentrations of less than 15%, whereas incoherent γ-Co 2Ta forms only at higher Ta concentrations.     Orbital Tests of Relativistic Gravity using Artificial Satellites

    We reexamine non-Einsteinian effects observable in the orbital motion of low-orbit artificial Earth satellites. The motivations for doing so are twofold: (i) recent theoretical studies suggest that the correct theory of gravity might contain a scalar contribution which has been reduced to a small value by the effect of the cosmological expansion; (ii) presently developed space technologies should soon give access to a new generation of satellites endowed with drag-free systems and tracked in three dimensions at the centimeter level. Our analysis suggests that such data could measure two independent combinations of the Eddington parameters (beta - 1) and (gamma - 1) at the 10^-4 level and probe the time variability of Newton's "constant" at the d(ln G)/dt ~ 10^-13 yr^-1 level. These tests would provide well-needed complements to the results of the Lunar Laser Ranging experiment, and of the presently planned experiments aiming at measuring (gamma -1). In view of the strong demands they make on the level of non- gravitational perturbations, these tests might require a dedicated mission consisting of an optimized passive drag-free satellite.Comment: 17 pages, IHES/P/94/22 and CPT-94/P.E.302

    Direct CP violation and the ΔI=1/2 rule in K→ππ decay from the standard model

    We present a lattice QCD calculation of the ΔI=1/2, K→ππ decay amplitude A0 and ϵ′, the measure of direct CP violation in K→ππ decay, improving our 2015 calculation [1] of these quantities. Both calculations were performed with physical kinematics on a 323×64 lattice with an inverse lattice spacing of a-1=1.3784(68)  GeV. However, the current calculation includes nearly 4 times the statistics and numerous technical improvements allowing us to more reliably isolate the ππ ground state and more accurately relate the lattice operators to those defined in the standard model. We find Re(A0)=2.99(0.32)(0.59)×10-7  GeV and Im(A0)=-6.98(0.62)(1.44)×10-11  GeV, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The former agrees well with the experimental result Re(A0)=3.3201(18)×10-7  GeV. These results for A0 can be combined with our earlier lattice calculation of A2 [2] to obtain Re(ϵ′/ϵ)=21.7(2.6)(6.2)(5.0)×10-4, where the third error represents omitted isospin breaking effects, and Re(A0)/Re(A2)=19.9(2.3)(4.4). The first agrees well with the experimental result of Re(ϵ′/ϵ)=16.6(2.3)×10-4. A comparison of the second with the observed ratio Re(A0)/Re(A2)=22.45(6), demonstrates the standard model origin of this “ΔI=1/2 rule” enhancement.We present a lattice QCD calculation of the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2, KππK\to\pi\pi decay amplitude A0A_0 and ε\varepsilon', the measure of direct CP-violation in KππK\to\pi\pi decay, improving our 2015 calculation of these quantities. The first agrees well with the experimental result of Re(ε/ε)=16.6(2.3)×104{\rm Re}(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)=16.6(2.3)\times 10^{-4}. A comparison of the second with the observed ratio Re(A0)/(A_0)/Re(A2)=22.45(6)(A_2) = 22.45(6), demonstrates the Standard Model origin of this "ΔI=1/2\Delta I = 1/2 rule" enhancement

    Dense, viscous brine behavior in heterogeneous porous medium systems

    The behavior of dense, viscous calcium bromide brine solutions used to remediate systems contaminated with dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) is considered in laboratory and field porous medium systems. The density and viscosity of brine solutions are experimentally investigated and functional forms fit over a wide range of mass fractions. A density of 1.7 times, and a corresponding viscosity of 6.3 times, that of water is obtained at a calcium bromide mass fraction of 0.53. A three-dimensional laboratory cell is used to investigate the establishment, persistence, and rate of removal of a stratified dense brine layer in a controlled system. Results from a field-scale experiment performed at the Dover National Test Site are used to investigate the ability to establish and maintain a dense brine layer as a component of a DNAPL recovery strategy, and to recover the brine at sufficiently high mass fractions to support the economical reuse of the brine. The results of both laboratory and field experiments show that a dense brine layer can be established, maintained, and recovered to a significant extent. Regions of unstable density profiles are shown to develop and persist in the field-scale experiment, which we attribute to regions of low hydraulic conductivity. The saturated-unsaturated, variable-density ground-water flow simulation code SUTRA is modified to describe the system of interest, and used to compare simulations to experimental observations and to investigate certain unobserved aspects of these complex systems. The model results show that the standard model formulation is not appropriate for capturing the behavior of sharp density gradients observed during the dense brine experiments

    Unsupervised network analysis of the plastic supraoptic nucleus transcriptome predicts caprin2 regulatory interactions

    AbstractThe supraoptic nucleus (SON) is a group of neurons in the hypothalamus responsible for the synthesis and secretion of the peptide hormones vasopressin and oxytocin. Following physiological cues, such as dehydration, salt-loading and lactation, the SON undergoes a function related plasticity that we have previously described in the rat at the transcriptome level. Using the unsupervised graphical lasso (Glasso) algorithm, we reconstructed a putative network from 500 plastic SON genes in which genes are the nodes and the edges are the inferred interactions. The most active nodal gene identified within the network wasCaprin2.Caprin2encodes an RNA-binding protein that we have previously shown to be vital for the functioning of osmoregulatory neuroendocrine neurons in the SON of the rat hypothalamus. To test the validity of the Glasso network, we either overexpressed or knocked downCaprin2transcripts in differentiated rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells and showed that these manipulations had significant opposite effects on the levels of putative target mRNAs. These studies suggest that the predicative power of the Glasso algorithm within anin vivosystem is accurate, and identifies biological targets that may be important to the functional plasticity of the SON.</jats:p

    A content analysis in reverse logistics: a review

    The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review in the various publications on the concept of Reverse Logistics (RL) and the related areas within the period 1998-2012. The content analysis approach has been opted to collect the relevant information from different books, journals, and conferences. A broad review of literature in RL from its emergence until the recent discussions have been analyzed and compared in this research. The findings show that, the theoretical construct in RL has been initiated from the conjunction features in the waste management and logistics activities. This idea had been developed by introducing the new term as RL and its definitions and contents such as the activities; key drivers; barriers to use; material flow, and networks in RL. Furthermore, the findings present the various modelling in different aspects of RL, for instance, the mathematical modelling by applying the existence methods in Multi Attribute Decision-Making Models (MADM). In addition, the environmental concerns and governmental legislatives matters and impacts, which have been highlighted, recently, on RL have been deliberated. Hence, this paper would assist the researchers and practitioners to obtain a broad review of RL in the last decade and, also provide an agenda for the future researches

    Trends in Bacterial Vaginosis Prevalence in a Cohort of U.S. Women with and at Risk for HIV

    Background: Women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) often have bacterial vaginosis (BV). The goal of this analysis was to assess how BV prevalence changed over time and across U.S. regions in enrollment cohorts of the Women's Interagency HIV Study. Methods: In a multisite study, BV was diagnosed retrospectively when pH and two of three other Amsel criteria were met. Prevalence was determined across four recruitment waves: 1994-5, 2001-2, 2011-2, and 2013-5. Generalized estimating equation multivariable logistic regression models assessed changes in visit prevalence across waves after controlling for HIV disease severity and other risks. Results: Among 4,790 women (3,539 with HIV and 1,251 without HIV), BV was diagnosed at 7,870 (12%) of 64,444 visits. Baseline prevalence across enrollment waves was 15.0%-19.2%, but declined in all cohorts, with prevalence in the initial cohort falling to 3.9% in the 1994-5 cohort after up to 21 years of continuous observation. Prevalence varied within U.S. regions. HIV status was not associated with BV. Conclusion: BV prevalence decreased with time in study. Prevalence varied across sites, but was not uniformly increased or decreased in any U.S. region. Clinical Trials.gov identifier: NCT00000797
