    Low-energy structure of Mn61 populated following β decay of Cr61

    β decay of the Cr6137 ground state has been studied. A new half-life of 233±11 ms has been deduced, and seven delayed γ rays have been assigned to the daughter Mn6136. The low-energy level structure of Mn6136 is similar to that of the less neutron-rich Mn57,59 nuclei. The odd-A25Mn isotopes follow the systematic trend in the yrast states of the even-even, Z+1 26Fe isotopes, and not that of the Z-1 24Cr isotopes, where a possible onset of collectivity has been suggested to occur already at N=36

    The Theory of Brown Dwarfs and Extrasolar Giant Planets

    Straddling the traditional realms of the planets and the stars, objects below the edge of the main sequence have such unique properties, and are being discovered in such quantities, that one can rightly claim that a new field at the interface of planetary science and and astronomy is being born. In this review, we explore the essential elements of the theory of brown dwarfs and giant planets, as well as of the new spectroscopic classes L and T. To this end, we describe their evolution, spectra, atmospheric compositions, chemistry, physics, and nuclear phases and explain the basic systematics of substellar-mass objects across three orders of magnitude in both mass and age and a factor of 30 in effective temperature. Moreover, we discuss the distinctive features of those extrasolar giant planets that are irradiated by a central primary, in particular their reflection spectra, albedos, and transits. Aspects of the latest theory of Jupiter and Saturn are also presented. Throughout, we highlight the effects of condensates, clouds, molecular abundances, and molecular/atomic opacities in brown dwarf and giant planet atmospheres and summarize the resulting spectral diagnostics.     Current Treatment Options for Local Residual Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

    Local residual disease occurs in 7-13 % after primary treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). To prevent tumor progression and/or distant metastasis, treatment is indicated. Biopsy is the “gold standard” for diagnosing residual disease. Because late histological regression frequently is seen after primary treatment for NPC, biopsy should be performed when imaging or endoscopy is suspicious at 10 weeks. Different modalities can be used in the treatment of local residual disease. Interestingly, the treatment of residual disease has better outcomes than treatment of recurrent disease. For early-stage disease (rT1-2), treatment results and survival rates are very good and comparable to patients who had a complete response after the first treatment. Surgery (endoscopic or open), brachytherapy (interstitial or intracavitary), external or stereotactic beam radiotherapy, or photodynamic therapy all have very good and comparable response rates. Choice should depend on the extension of disease, feasibility of the treatment, and doctor’s and patient’s preferences and experience, as well as the risks of the adverse events. For the more extended tumors, choice of treatment is more difficult, because complete response rates are poorer and severe side effects are not uncommon. The results of external beam reirradiation and stereotactic radiotherapy are better than brachytherapy for T3-4 tumors. Photodynamic therapy resulted in good palliative responses in a few patients with extensive disease. Also, chemotherapeutics or the Epstein-Barr virus targeted therapies can be used when curative intent treatment is not feasible anymore. However, their advantage in isolated local failure has not been well described yet. Because residual disease often is a problem in countries with a high incidence of NPC and limited radiotherapeutic and surgical facilities, it should be understood that most of the above mentioned therapeutic modalities (radiotherapy and surgery) will not be readily available. More research with controlled, randomized trials are needed to find realistic treatment options for residual disease

    Mineralogical, chemical, organic and microbial properties of subsurface soil cores from Mars Desert Research Station (Utah, USA): Phyllosilicate and sulfate analogues to Mars mission landing sites

    We collected and analysed soil cores from four geologic units surrounding Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) Utah, USA, including Mancos Shale, Dakota Sandstone, Morrison formation (Brushy Basin member) and Summerville formation. The area is an important geochemical and morphological analogue to terrains on Mars. Soils were analysed for mineralogy by a Terra X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a field version of the CheMin instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission (2012 landing). Soluble ion chemistry, total organic content and identity and distribution of microbial populations were also determined. The Terra data reveal that Mancos and Morrison soils are rich in phyllosilicates similar to those observed on Mars from orbital measurements (montmorillonite, nontronite and illite). Evaporite minerals observed include gypsum, thenardite, polyhalite and calcite. Soil chemical analysis shows sulfate the dominant anion in all soils and SO4>>CO3, as on Mars. The cation pattern Na>Ca>Mg is seen in all soils except for the Summerville where Ca>Na. In all soils, SO4 correlates with Na, suggesting sodium sulfates are the dominant phase. Oxidizable organics are low in all soils and range from a high of 0.7% in the Mancos samples to undetectable at a detection limit of 0.1% in the Morrison soils. Minerals rich in chromium and vanadium were identified in Morrison soils that result from diagenetic replacement of organic compounds. Depositional environment, geologic history and mineralogy all affect the ability to preserve and detect organic compounds. Subsurface biosphere populations were revealed to contain organisms from all three domains (Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya) with cell density between 3.0-1

    Role of MRI in detecting involvement of the uterine internal os in uterine cervical cancer: Systematic review of diagnostic test accuracy

    Purpose: In patients with uterine cervical cancer, pretreatment recognition of uterine extension is crucial in treatment decision-making for fertility-sparing surgery and for target delineation in radiotherapy. Although MRI is generally considered the most reliable method, its value for detecting involvement of the uterine internal os is unclear.Methods: Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases were systematically searched (January 1997-December 2012) for MRI studies that measured the accuracy of involvement of the uterine internal os compared to histopathology as reference standard in patients with uterine cervical cancer. Data were assessed using the QUADAS tool. Accuracy concerned either involvement (yes/no) of the uterine internal os, or measuring invasion distance toward the uterine corpus.Results: Two retrospective and two prospective studies described 366 patients diagnosed with uterine cervical cancer FIGO stage IIB or below, in whom 64 (17%) had uterine internal os involvement. For three studies the summary estimates of specificity, sensitivity, negative predictive value (NPV), positive predictive value (PPV), and accuracy were 91%, 97%, 99%, 79% and 95%, respectively; one study had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.8.Conclusion: MRI has a high level of accuracy; however, data are limited and for validation a large prospective study is needed that compares actual measurements on MRI with histopathological examination.     Addition of MRI for CT-based pancreatic tumor delineation: a feasibility study

    Contains fulltext : 175066.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: To assess the effect of additional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alongside the planning computed tomography (CT) scan on target volume delineation in pancreatic cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight observers (radiation oncologists) from six institutions delineated the gross tumor volume (GTV) on 3DCT, and internal GTV (iGTV) on 4DCT of four pancreatic cancer patients, while MRI was available in a second window (CT + MRI). Variations in volume, generalized conformity index (CIgen), and overall observer variation, expressed as standard deviation (SD) of the distances between delineated surfaces, were analyzed. CIgen is a measure of overlap of the delineated iGTVs (1 = full overlap, 0 = no overlap). Results were compared with those from an earlier study that assessed the interobserver variation by the same observers on the same patients on CT without MRI (CT-only). RESULTS: The maximum ratios between delineated volumes within a patient were 6.1 and 22.4 for the GTV (3DCT) and iGTV (4DCT), respectively. The average (root-mean-square) overall observer variations were SD = 0.41 cm (GTV) and SD = 0.73 cm (iGTV). The mean CIgen was 0.36 for GTV and 0.37 for iGTV. When compared to the iGTV delineated on CT-only, the mean volumes of the iGTV on CT + MRI were significantly smaller (32%, Wilcoxon signed-rank, p < .0005). The median volumes of the iGTV on CT + MRI were included for 97% and 92% in the median volumes of the iGTV on CT. Furthermore, CT + MRI showed smaller overall observer variations (root-mean-square SD = 0.59 cm) in six out of eight delineated structures compared to CT-only (root-mean-square SD = 0.72 cm). However, large local observer variations remained close to biliary stents and pathological lymph nodes, indicating issues with instructions and instruction compliance. CONCLUSIONS: The availability of MRI images during target delineation of pancreatic cancer on 3DCT and 4DCT resulted in smaller target volumes and reduced the interobserver variation in six out of eight delineated structures

    The impact of the overall radiotherapy time on clinical outcome of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a retrospective study

    Purpose In Yogyakarta, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) shows a poor response to radiotherapy treatment. Previous study showed a prolonged overall treatment time (OTT), due to interruptions during treatment. This study explores the association between clinical outcome and OTT. Secondary, the relation between clinical outcome and disease stage, waiting time to radiation (WT) and chemotherapy schedule was explored. Methods In this retrospective cohort, 142 patients who started curative intent radiotherapy for NPC between March 2009 and May 2014, with or without chemotherapy, were included. The median follow up time was 1.9 years. Data was collected on WT, OTT, disease stage, and chemotherapy schedule. Time factors were log-transformed. Clinical outcome was defined as therapy response, loco-regional control (LRC), disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Results The median WT was 117 days (range 12–581) and OTT was 58 days (43–142). OTT and disease stage were not associated to any of the clinical outcome parameters. The log- WT was associated to poor therapy outcome (HR 1.68; 95% ci: 1.09–2.61), LRC (HR 1.66; 95% ci: 1.15–2.39), and DFS (HR 1.4; 95% ci: 1.09–1.81). In the multivariable analysis, significant hazard risk for poor therapy response, LRC, DFS and OS were seen for patients who didn’t received concurrent chemotherapy. Conclusion Not receiving concurrent chemotherapy showed the strongest risk for poor outcome. Since the choice of chemotherapy is related to a variety of factors, like the WT and patient’s physical condition when radiation can start, careful interpretation is needed. Reason for not finding a relation between OTT and clinical outcome might be the low number of patients who finished radiotherapy within 7 weeks, or by a stronger detrimental effect of other factors
