Issues related to direct seeding of rice in rainfed cropping systems in northwest Bangladesh
Economic factors and developments in rice production technologies are the major drivers that have led to the adoption of direct seeding of rice in place of transplanting in Asia. The primary economic motives for a shift to direct seeding are the savings in labor cost and the possibility of crop intensification. A key development challenge in the drought-prone rainfed agriculture of the Barind Tract of northwest Bangladesh is to simultaneously improve the reliability and yield of monsoon rice while improving total system productivity by increasing the area planted to drought-tolerant postrice crops. Research trials and field-scale evaluation by farmers have demonstrated that dry direct seeding or wet seeding of pregerminated
rice seed reduces labor for crop establishment, results in rice yields similar to or higher than those from conventional transplanting, and advances harvest by
7-10 days. Earlier harvest has the potential to reduce the risk of terminal drought in rice when the monsoon ends abruptly and increases the opportunity for establishing
a postrice crop of chickpea on residual moisture. Herbicide use is essential with direct seeding and this further reduces rice production costs. This modified
rice/legume system using direct seeding is knowledge-intensive. Widespread sustained adoption will depend on farmers undertaking timely tillage, adequate land
leveling, and timely application of herbicides. Extension/farmer training supported by clear decision support frameworks will be needed to provide farmers with access to the knowledge needed to implement direct seeding effectively

A Probabilistic Analysis of Kademlia Networks
Kademlia is currently the most widely used searching algorithm in P2P
(peer-to-peer) networks. This work studies an essential question about Kademlia
from a mathematical perspective: how long does it take to locate a node in the
network? To answer it, we introduce a random graph K and study how many steps
are needed to locate a given vertex in K using Kademlia's algorithm, which we
call the routing time. Two slightly different versions of K are studied. In the
first one, vertices of K are labelled with fixed IDs. In the second one,
vertices are assumed to have randomly selected IDs. In both cases, we show that
the routing time is about c*log(n), where n is the number of nodes in the
network and c is an explicitly described constant.Comment: ISAAC 201
Modelling the electric field applied to a tokamak
The vector potential for the Ohmic heating coil system of a tokamak is
obtained in semi-analytical form. Comparison is made to the potential of a
simple, finite solenoid. In the quasi-static limit, the time rate of change of
the potential determines the induced electromotive force through the

Unified description of ballistic and diffusive carrier transport in semiconductor structures
A unified theoretical description of ballistic and diffusive carrier
transport in parallel-plane semiconductor structures is developed within the
semiclassical model. The approach is based on the introduction of a
thermo-ballistic current consisting of carriers which move ballistically in the
electric field provided by the band edge potential, and are thermalized at
certain randomly distributed equilibration points by coupling to the background
of impurity atoms and carriers in equilibrium. The sum of the thermo-ballistic
and background currents is conserved, and is identified with the physical
current. The current-voltage characteristic for nondegenerate systems and the
zero-bias conductance for degenerate systems are expressed in terms of a
reduced resistance. For arbitrary mean free path and arbitrary shape of the
band edge potential profile, this quantity is determined from the solution of
an integral equation, which also provides the quasi-Fermi level and the
thermo-ballistic current. To illustrate the formalism, a number of simple
examples are considered explicitly. The present work is compared with previous

Dynamical compactification from de Sitter space
We show that D-dimensional de Sitter space is unstable to the nucleation of
non-singular geometries containing spacetime regions with different numbers of
macroscopic dimensions, leading to a dynamical mechanism of compactification.
These and other solutions to Einstein gravity with flux and a cosmological
constant are constructed by performing a dimensional reduction under the
assumption of q-dimensional spherical symmetry in the full D-dimensional
geometry. In addition to the familiar black holes, black branes, and
compactification solutions we identify a number of new geometries, some of
which are completely non-singular. The dynamical compactification mechanism
populates lower-dimensional vacua very differently from false vacuum eternal
inflation, which occurs entirely within the context of four-dimensions. We
outline the phenomenology of the nucleation rates, finding that the
dimensionality of the vacuum plays a key role and that among vacua of the same
dimensionality, the rate is highest for smaller values of the cosmological
constant. We consider the cosmological constant problem and propose a novel

On Thermodynamical Properties of Some Coset CFT Backgrounds
We investigate the thermodynamical features of two Lorentzian signature
backgrounds that arise in string theory as exact CFTs and possess more than two
disconnected asymptotic regions: the 2-d charged black hole and the
Nappi-Witten cosmological model. We find multiple smooth disconnected Euclidean
versions of the charged black hole background. They are characterized by
different temperatures and electro-chemical potentials. We show that there is
no straightforward analog of the Hartle-Hawking state that would express these
thermodynamical features. We also obtain multiple Euclidean versions of the
Nappi-Witten cosmological model and study their singularity structure. It

Relativistic wave equations for interacting massive particles with arbitrary half-intreger spins
New formulation of relativistic wave equations (RWE) for massive particles
with arbitrary half-integer spins s interacting with external electromagnetic
fields are proposed. They are based on wave functions which are irreducible
tensors of rank n=s-\frac12$) antisymmetric w.r.t. n pairs of indices,
whose components are bispinors. The form of RWE is straightforward and free of
inconsistencies associated with the other approaches to equations describing
interacting higher spin particles
Influence of L-carnitine on litter characteristics from gilts harvested at day 40, 55, and 70 of gestation
Swine research, 2005 is known as Swine day, 2005A total of 59 gilts were used to determine the effects of supplemental L-carnitine on reproductive performance. Experimental treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial with main effects of L-carnitine (0 or 50 ppm) and day of gestation (40, 55, or 70). All gilts received a constant feed allowance of 3.86 lb/day and a top-dress containing either 0 or 88 mg of L-carnitine, starting on the first day of breeding and continuing until the day of harvest. Total litter size, total litter weight, and crown-to-rump length of fetuses were not different (P>0.10) between treatments at any gestation length. By d 70 of gestation, average fetus weight was heavier (P = 0.06) for fetuses from gilts fed L-carnitine, compared with fetuses from gilts fed the control diet. In
addition, at d 70, fetal insulin-like growth factor- II (IGF-II) concentrations were lower (P = 0.09) for fetuses from gilts fed L-carnitine than for fetuses from gilts fed the control diet. Feeding L-carnitine may have decreased fetal IGF-II, therefore increasing cell proliferation and delaying cell differentiation. These results show that providing supplemental Lcarnitine to gestating gilts has beneficial effects on average fetal weight, possibly observed because of its ability to reduce fetal IGF-II concentrations
