    Vertical versus Diagonal Dimensional Reduction for p-branes

    In addition to the double-dimensional reduction procedure that employs world-volume Killing symmetries of pp-brane supergravity solutions and acts diagonally on a plot of pp versus spacetime dimension DD, there exists a second procedure of ``vertical'' reduction. This reduces the transverse-space dimension via an integral that superposes solutions to the underlying Laplace equation. We show that vertical reduction is also closely related to the recently-introduced notion of intersecting pp-branes. We illustrate this with examples, and also construct a new D=11D=11 solution describing four intersecting membranes, which preserves 1/161/16 of the supersymmetry. Given the two reduction schemes plus duality transformations at special points of the scalar modulus space, one may relate most of the pp-brane solutions of relevance to superstring theory. We argue that the maximum classifying duality symmetry for this purpose is the Weyl group of the corresponding Cremmer-Julia supergravity symmetry Er(+r)E_{r(+r)}.     Orientifolds and Slumps in G_2 and Spin(7) Metrics

    We discuss some new metrics of special holonomy, and their roles in string theory and M-theory. First we consider Spin(7) metrics denoted by C_8, which are complete on a complex line bundle over CP^3. The principal orbits are S^7, described as a triaxially squashed S^3 bundle over S^4. The behaviour in the S^3 directions is similar to that in the Atiyah-Hitchin metric, and we show how this leads to an M-theory interpretation with orientifold D6-branes wrapped over S^4. We then consider new G_2 metrics which we denote by C_7, which are complete on an R^2 bundle over T^{1,1}, with principal orbits that are S^3\times S^3. We study the C_7 metrics using numerical methods, and we find that they have the remarkable property of admitting a U(1) Killing vector whose length is nowhere zero or infinite. This allows one to make an everywhere non-singular reduction of an M-theory solution to give a solution of the type IIA theory. The solution has two non-trivial S^2 cycles, and both carry magnetic charge with respect to the R-R vector field. We also discuss some four-dimensional hyper-Kahler metrics described recently by Cherkis and Kapustin, following earlier work by Kronheimer. We show that in certain cases these metrics, whose explicit form is known only asymptotically, can be related to metrics characterised by solutions of the su(\infty) Toda equation, which can provide a way of studying their interior structure.Comment: Latex, 45 pages; minor correction

    Supersymmetric Non-singular Fractional D2-branes and NS-NS 2-branes

    We obtain regular deformed D2-brane solutions with fractional D2-branes arising as wrapped D4-branes. The space transverse to the D2-brane is a complete Ricci-flat 7-manifold of G_2 holonomy, which is asymptotically conical with principal orbits that are topologically CP^3 or the flag manifold SU(3)/(U(1) x U(1)). We obtain the solution by first constructing an L^2 normalisable harmonic 3-form. We also review a previously-obtained regular deformed D2-brane whose transverse space is a different 7-manifold of G_2 holonomy, with principal orbits that are topologically S^3 x S^3. This describes D2-branes with fractional NS-NS 2-branes coming from the wrapping of 5-branes, which is supported by a non-normalisable harmonic 3-form on the 7-manifold. We prove that both types of solutions are supersymmetric, preserving 1/16 of the maximal supersymmetry and hence that they are dual to {\cal N}=1 three-dimensional gauge theories. In each case, the spectrum for minimally-coupled scalars is discrete, indicating confinement in the infrared region of the dual gauge theories. We examine resolutions of other branes, and obtain necessary conditions for their regularity. The resolution of many of these seems to lie beyond supergravity. In the process of studying these questions, we construct new explicit examples of complete Ricci-flat metrics.Comment: Latex, 30 page

    Mixed methods research is increasingly being used in business and management disciplines, in spite of positivist traditions. The aim of the study is twofold: (1) to examine the types of mixed methods approaches being used, and (2) to determine the quality of the reporting of mixed methods studies published in the field of project management. A retrospective content analysis of articles from three ranked project management journals was undertaken for a sample period of 2004 to 2010. Our findings suggest the field of project management is in need of capacity building in relation to the good reporting of mixed methods studies

    The epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in Africa: a scoping review

    This scoping review of population-based epidemiological studies was done to provide background information on the prevalences and distribution of psychiatric disorders in Africa for calls to broaden diversity in psychiatric genetic studies. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science to retrieve relevant literature in English, French, and Portuguese from Jan 1, 1984, to Aug 18, 2020. In 36 studies from 12 African countries, the lifetime prevalence ranged from 3·3% to 9·8% for mood disorders, from 5·7% to 15·8% for anxiety disorders, from 3·7% to 13·3% for substance use disorders, and from 1·0% to 4·4% for psychotic disorders. Although the prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders appears to be lower than that observed in research outside the continent, we identified similar distributions by gender, although not by age or urbanicity. This review reveals gaps in epidemiological research on psychiatric disorders and opportunities to leverage existing epidemiological and genetic research within Africa to advance our understanding of psychiatric disorders. Studies that are methodologically comparable but diverse in geographical context are needed to advance psychiatric epidemiology and provide a foundation for understanding environmental risk in genetic studies of diverse populations globally

    Hindrance of heavy-ion fusion at extreme sub-barrier energies in open-shell colliding systems

    The excitation function for the fusion-evaporation reaction 64Ni + 100Mo has been measured down to a cross section of ∼5 nb. Extensive coupled-channels calculations have been performed, which cannot reproduce the steep falloff of the excitation function at extreme sub-barrier energies. Thus, this system exhibits a hindrance for fusion, a phenomenon that has been discovered only recently. In the S-factor representation introduced to quantify the hindrance, a maximum is observed at Es = 120.6 MeV, which corresponds to 90% of the reference energy Esref, a value expected from systematics of closed-shell systems. A systematic analysis of Ni-induced fusion reactions leading to compound nuclei with mass A = 100-200 is presented in order to explore a possible dependence of fusion hindrance on nuclear structure

    First evidence of fusion hindrance for a small Q-value system

    The excitation function for the fusion-evaporation reaction 28Si + 64Ni has been measured down to a cross section of 25 nb. This is the first observation of fusion hindrance at extreme sub-barrier energies for a system with a small, negative Q-value (- 1.78 MeV). This result is further proof that heavy-ion fusion hindrance, reported earlier only for systems with large, negative Q-values, is a general phenomenon. The measured behavior can be reproduced by coupled-channels calculations with a modified ion-ion potential incorporating the effects of nuclear incompressibility

    The 44Ti(α, p) reaction and its implication on the 44Ti yield in supernovae

    Cross sections for the 44Ti(α, p)47V reaction which significantly affects the yield of 44Ti in supernovae were measured in the energy range 5.7MeV ≤ Ec.m. ≤ 9 MeV, using a beam of radioactive 44Ti. The cross sections and the deduced astrophysical reaction rates are larger than the results from theoretical calculations by about a factor of 2. The implications of this increase in the reaction rate for the search of supernovae using space-based gamma detectors are discussed

    Kπ=8- isomers and Kπ=2- octupole vibrations in N=150 shell-stabilized isotones

    Isomers have been populated in Cm246 and No252 with quantum numbers Kπ=8-, which decay through Kπ=2- rotational bands built on octupole vibrational states. For N=150 isotones with (even) atomic number Z=94-102, the Kπ=8- and 2- states have remarkably stable energies, indicating neutron excitations. An exception is a singular minimum in the 2- energy at Z=98, due to the additional role of proton configurations. The nearly constant energies, in isotones spanning an 18% increase in Coulomb energy near the Coulomb limit, provide a test for theory. The two-quasiparticle Kπ=8- energies are described with single-particle energies given by the Woods-Saxon potential and the Kπ=2- vibrational energies by quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations. Ramifications for self-consistent mean-field theory are discussed

    Structure of the Odd-A, Shell-stabilized nucleus No102253

    In-beam γ-ray spectroscopic measurements have been made on No102253. A single rotational band was identified up to a probable spin of 39/2, which is assigned to the 7/2+[624] Nilsson configuration. The bandhead energy and the moment of inertia provide discriminating tests of contemporary models of the heaviest nuclei. Novel methods were required to interprete the sparse data set associated with cross sections of around 50nb. These methods included comparisons of experimental and simulated spectra, as well as testing for evidence of a rotational band in the γγ matrix
