Field Emission for resonance sensing in MEMS/NEMS
In the past decades, there is a considerable interest in the sensor community to move from micron to nano-devices, typically scaling of resonators such as cantilever beams
Absence of a dose-rate effect in the transformation of C3H 10T1/2 cells by α-particles
The findings of Hill et al. (1984) on the greatly enhanced transformation frequencies at very low dose rates of fission neutrons induced us to perform an analogous study with -particles at comparable dose rates. Transformation frequencies were determined with γ-rays at high dose rate (0·5 Gy/min), and with -particles at high (0·2 Gy/min) and at low dose rates (0·83-2·5 mGy/min) in the C3H 10T1/2 cell system.
α-particles were substantially more effective than γ-rays, both for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation at high and low dose rates. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation was of similar magnitude, and ranged from about 3 at an -particle dose of 2 Gy to values of the order of 10 at 0·25 Gy. In contrast to the experiments of Hill et al. (1984) with fission neutrons, no increased transformation frequencies were observed when the -particle dose was protracted over several hours
Evaluation of synergistic effect between ethyl formate and phosphine for control of three species Aphids in perishable commodity
Methyl bromide (MB) as a fumigant for Quarantine and Pre-shipment (QPS) could offer eradication of target pests within shorter fumigation period and without phytotoxicity. Therefore, unlike MB alternatives for soil fumigation, there is no ideally MB alternative fumigant for QPS purpose, particularly for perishable commodities. It is critically important that within shorter fumigation time requires killing all target insect pests and without effect of quality and deliver treated fruit and vegetables to the final consumer. Aphids are pests frequently found in imported and exported fruit and vegetables. Aphids was known as quarantine pest hard to control when conduct short period fumigation with phosphine (PH3) and low dose of ethyl formate (EF). Ethyl formate can lead to highly sorption and phytotoxic damage of some perishable commodities such as strawberries and cut flowers, especially at lower temperature (< 8°C). Here, we reported that synergistic effect between ethyl formate and phosphine at lower dosages and temperature. The mixture of ethyl formate and phosphine had synergistic effect to control adult and nymph stages of tested cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) and turnip aphid (Lipaphis erysimi). When 0.5 mg/L of PH3 combined with different levels of EF at 5 and 20°C for 2 hours fumigation, there was significantly difference in terms of LCT50% and LCT90% values in comparison with EF or PH3 alone. This new technology could be meet QPS requirement that is shorter exposure time and less damage of perishable commodities
Hadronic B Decays to Charmed Baryons
We study exclusive B decays to final states containing a charmed baryon
within the pole model framework. Since the strong coupling for is larger than that for , the two-body charmful decay
has a rate larger than
as the former proceeds via the pole while the latter via the
pole. By the same token, the three-body decay receives less baryon-pole contribution than
. However, because the important charmed-meson
pole diagrams contribute constructively to the former and destructively to the
latter, has a rate slightly larger than
. It is found that one quarter of the rate comes from the resonant contributions. We discuss
the decays and
and stress that they are not color suppressed even though they can only proceed
via an internal W emission.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
High-speed, image-based eye tracking with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope
We demonstrate a high-speed, image-based tracking scanning laser ophthalmoscope (TSLO) that can provide high fidelity structural images, real-time eye tracking and targeted stimulus delivery. The system was designed for diffraction-limited performance over an 8° field of view (FOV) and operates with a flexible field of view of 1°-5.5°. Stabilized videos of the retina were generated showing an amplitude of motion after stabilization of 0.2 arcmin or less across all frequencies. In addition, the imaging laser can be modulated to place a stimulus on a targeted retinal location. We show a stimulus placement accuracy with a standard deviation less than 1 arcmin. With a smaller field size of 2°, individual cone photoreceptors were clearly visible at eccentricities outside of the fovea. © 2012 Optical Society of America
Strongly Interacting Luttinger Liquid and Superconductivity in an Exactly Solvable Model
A new family of exactly solvable one dimensional models with a hard-core
repulsive potential is solved by the Bethe Ansatz for an arbitrary hard-core
radius. The exact ground state phase diagrams in a plane 'electron density -
on-site interaction' have been studied for several values of a hard-core
radius. It is shown that superconducting phase and strongly interacting
Luttinger liquid state are coexisted at a high electron density and unusually
high value of repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, RevTe
Neurological soft signs in persons with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and the relationships to neuropsychological functions
BACKGROUND: Neurological abnormalities have been reported in people with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). The current study aimed to examine the prevalence of neurological soft signs (NSS) in this clinical group and to examine the relationship of NSS to other neuropsychological performances.
METHODS: Twenty-nine people with aMCI and 28 cognitively healthy elderly people were recruited for the present study. The NSS subscales (motor coordination, sensory integration, and disinhibition) of the Cambridge Neurological Inventory and a set of neuropsychological tests were administered to all the participants.
RESULTS: People with aMCI exhibited significantly more motor coordination signs, disinhibition signs, and total NSS than normal controls. Correlation analysis showed that the motor coordination subscale score and total score of NSS were significantly inversely correlated with the combined Z-score of neuropsychological tests in aMCI group.
CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary findings suggested that people with aMCI demonstrated a higher prevalence of NSS compared to healthy elderly people. Moreover, NSS was found to be inversely correlated with the neuropsychological performances in persons with aMCI. When taken together, these findings suggested that NSS may play a potential important role and serve as a tool to assist in the early detection of aMCI
Interdisciplinary undergraduate learning modules in gerontechnology
As the older population grows rapidly worldwide, gerontechnology can play an increasingly crucial role in improving older people’s quality of life in an affordable and sustainable way. However, even with growing interests, gerontechnology has yet to be established as a widely available educational or research program. One root cause is the lack of a well-established curriculum to train new gerontechnologists and to help professionals in relevant fields to develop gerontechnological specialties. This paper summarizes our experience and insights gained from designing, instructing, and evaluating learning modules for gerontechnology in the past 2½ years, and outlines the learning materials and effective pedagogies for gerontechnology that can be adopted and further developed
Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz and Condensed Matter
The basics of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equation are given. The simplest
case is repulsive delta function bosons, the thermodynamic equation contains
only one unknown function. We also treat the XXX model with spin 1/2 and the
XXZ model and the XYZ model. This method is very useful for the investigation
of the low temperature thermodynamics of solvable systems.Comment: 52 pages, 6 figures, latex, lamuphys.st
