Dgsos on DTRS
We perform simulations of a discrete gaussian solid on solid (DGSOS) model on
dynamical graphs, which is equivalent to coupling the model to 2d
quantum gravity, using the cluster algorithms recently developed by Evertz
et.al.for use on fixed lattices. We find evidence from the growth of the
width-squared in the rough phase of KT-like behaviour, which is consistent with
theoretical expectations. We also investigate the cluster statistics, dynamical
critical exponent and lattice properties, and compare these with the dual XY

Ising Spins on Thin Graphs
The Ising model on ``thin'' graphs (standard Feynman diagrams) displays
several interesting properties. For ferromagnetic couplings there is a mean
field phase transition at the corresponding Bethe lattice transition point. For
antiferromagnetic couplings the replica trick gives some evidence for a spin
glass phase. In this paper we investigate both the ferromagnetic and
antiferromagnetic models with the aid of simulations. We confirm the Bethe
lattice values of the critical points for the ferromagnetic model on
and graphs and examine the putative spin glass phase in the
antiferromagnetic model by looking at the overlap between replicas in a
quenched ensemble of graphs. We also compare the Ising results with those for
higher state Potts models and Ising models on ``fat'' graphs, such as those

Hierarchy of Scales in Language Dynamics
Methods and insights from statistical physics are finding an increasing variety of applications where one seeks to understand the emergent properties of a complex interacting system. One such area concerns the dynamics of language at a variety of levels of description, from the behaviour of individual agents learning simple artificial languages from each other, up to changes in the structure of languages shared by large groups of speakers over historical timescales. In this Colloquium, we survey a hierarchy of scales at which language and linguistic behaviour can be described, along with the main progress in understanding that has been made at each of them − much of which has come from the statistical physics community. We argue that future developments may arise by linking the different levels of the hierarchy together in a more coherent fashion, in particular where this allows more effective use of rich empirical data sets
Measurement of prompt D and meson azimuthal anisotropy and search for strong electric fields in PbPb collisions at root = 5.02 TeV
The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapiditydependent difference (Av2) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow, v2) between D0 (uc) and D0 (uc) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMS detector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of Av2. The rapidity-averaged value is found to be (Av2) = 0.001 ? 0.001 (stat)? 0.003 (syst) in PbPb collisions at ?sNN = 5.02 TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the D0 and D0mesons v2 and triangular flow coefficient (v3) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum (pT), and event centrality (a measure of the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt D0 meson v2 values is observed, while the v3 is largely independent of centrality. Non-AIDS defining cancers in the D:A:D Study-time trends and predictors of survival : a cohort study
BACKGROUND:Non-AIDS defining cancers (NADC) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV-positive individuals. Using data from a large international cohort of HIV-positive individuals, we described the incidence of NADC from 2004-2010, and described subsequent mortality and predictors of these.METHODS:Individuals were followed from 1st January 2004/enrolment in study, until the earliest of a new NADC, 1st February 2010, death or six months after the patient's last visit. Incidence rates were estimated for each year of follow-up, overall and stratified by gender, age and mode of HIV acquisition. Cumulative risk of mortality following NADC diagnosis was summarised using Kaplan-Meier methods, with follow-up for these analyses from the date of NADC diagnosis until the patient's death, 1st February 2010 or 6 months after the patient's last visit. Factors associated with mortality following NADC diagnosis were identified using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression.RESULTS:Over 176,775 person-years (PY), 880 (2.1%) patients developed a new NADC (incidence: 4.98/1000PY [95% confidence interval 4.65, 5.31]). Over a third of these patients (327, 37.2%) had died by 1st February 2010. Time trends for lung cancer, anal cancer and Hodgkin's lymphoma were broadly consistent. Kaplan-Meier cumulative mortality estimates at 1, 3 and 5 years after NADC diagnosis were 28.2% [95% CI 25.1-31.2], 42.0% [38.2-45.8] and 47.3% [42.4-52.2], respectively. Significant predictors of poorer survival after diagnosis of NADC were lung cancer (compared to other cancer types), male gender, non-white ethnicity, and smoking status. Later year of diagnosis and higher CD4 count at NADC diagnosis were associated with improved survival. The incidence of NADC remained stable over the period 2004-2010 in this large observational cohort.CONCLUSIONS:The prognosis after diagnosis of NADC, in particular lung cancer and disseminated cancer, is poor but has improved somewhat over time. Modifiable risk factors, such as smoking and low CD4 counts, were associated with mortality following a diagnosis of NADC
