    Phase-Sensitive Tetracrystal Pairing-Symmetry Measurements and Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry States of High Tc Superconductors

    A detailed analysis of the symmetric tetracrystal geometry used in phase-sensitive pairing symmetry experiments on high Tc superconductors is carried out for both bulk and surface time-reversal symmetry-breaking states, such as the d+id' and d+is states. The results depend critically on the substrate geometry. In the general case, for the bulk d+id' (or d+is) state, the measured flux quantization should in general not be too different from that obtained in the pure d-wave case, provided |d'| << |d| (or |s| << |d|). However, in one particular high symmetry geometry, the d+id' state gives results that allow it to be distinguished from the pure d and the d + is states. Results are also given for the cases where surface d+is or d+id' states occur at a [110] surface of a bulk d-wave superconductor. Remarkably, in the highest symmetry geometry, a number of the broken time-reversal symmetry states discussed above give flux quantization conditions usually associated with states not having broken time- reversal symmetry.Comment: 6 page

    Does dental rehabilitation under general anaesthetic contribute to the development of temporomandibular disorders in children and adolescents? A scoping review

    BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have multiple aetiological factors. Although some evidence suggests invasive and lengthy dental procedures may contribute toward TMD development, there is a relative paucity in the literature regarding an association between elements of paediatric dental general anaesthesia (pDGA) and TMDs. This review aims to consider the impact of dental rehabilitation (and its constituent elements) performed under general anaesthesia on the development of TMDs in childhood and adolescence and identify theories and/or gaps in knowledge which may benefit from future research. METHODS: Due to the need to preliminarily examine the nature and extent of the current evidence base, a scoping review approach was chosen. The review was conducted based on the framework provided by the methodological working group of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for conducting systematic scoping reviews. Electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched as well as the grey literature using OpenGrey, Nexis, Ethos, Google Scholar and ProQuest, with eligible studies uploaded onto Zotero (Mac Version 5.0.96.2). RESULTS: A total of 810 records were identified. After removing duplicates and those not available in English, 260 were identified for title and abstract screening. Seventy-six records underwent full text review of which only one met the broad inclusion criteria. The most common reasons for exclusion were no specific relation to general anaesthesia, not specifically relating to dental treatment and only being concerned with TMD management. The included study found that while development of TMDs following dental rehabilitation under GA did occur in children, whether the problems caused by treatment were exacerbated by other elements of the pDGA process remains unknown. CONCLUSION: This review has confirmed a distinct paucity of research in this field. While there is no current tangible scientific evidence that common and routine dental procedures lead to TMD, the literature shows that alterations to any one or a combination of critical factors can contribute to TMD development, which may be collectively exacerbated by iatrogenic macrotrauma during the pDGA process. We have highlighted elements of pre-, peri- and post-operative pDGA, alongside biopsychosocial factors, which may contribute to TMD development in childhood and adolescence and may benefit from future research

    Loading a vapor cell magneto-optic trap using light-induced atom desorption

    Low intensity white light was used to increase the loading rate of 87^{87}Rb atoms into a vapor cell magneto-optic trap by inducing non-thermal desorption of Rb atoms from the stainless steel walls of the vapor cell. An increased Rb partial pressure reached a new equilibrium value in less than 10 seconds after switching on the broadband light source. After the source was turned off, the partial pressure returned to its previous value in 1/e1/e times as short as 10 seconds.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Prevalence of Perkinsus marinus in the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica in relation to tidal placement in a Georgia tidal creek

    Peer-reviewed.This experiment was designed to evaluate the effects tidal zonation and bottom placement of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, have on the prevalence and intensity of the oyster parasite, Perkinsus marinus a suspected causative agent for subtidal oyster mortalities experienced in the coastal waters of Georgia. Twelve growout bags (1 m x 0.5 m; 12.7 mm mesh), each containing 200 oysters, were placed in Jointer Creek, Georgia In March 1992. Bags (3 replicates each) were placed lntertidally and subtidally on the creek bottom and offbottom. Ten oysters per bag were removed monthly for twelve months beginning March 1992, and were inspected for prevalence and intensity of Perkinsus marinus, using the thioglycollate method. Oyster mortality and shell length data were also evaluated. Neither prevalence (p = 0.3505) nor intensity levels (p = 0.2993) of Perkinsus marinus in oysters were significantly different among the treatments. Although there were no significant differences In prevalence or intensity of the pathogen among treatments, the intertidal offbottom treatment had the lowest values most frequently. Perkinsus marinus was present in all replicates every month. Prevalence and intensity of infection followed the typically observed pattern of maximum values in summer and fall and minimum levels in winter. Subtidal bottom oysters experienced higher mortalities (p = 0.0022), but the prevalence and intensity of Perklnsus marinus in oysters were not significantly different between treatments. It appears therefore, that the oyster parasite, Perkinsus marinus is not the discerning factor in the higher mortalities witnessed in oysters placed subtidally on the bottom in the southeastern U.S. coastal waters

    Magnetic-interference patterns in Josephson junctions with d+is symmetry

    The magnetic interference pattern and the spontaneous flux in unconventional Josephson junctions of superconductors with d+is symmetry are calculated for different reduced junction lengths and the relative factor of the d and s wave components. This is a time reversal broken symmetry state. We study the stability of the fractional vortex and antivortex which are spontaneously formed and examine their evolution as we change the length and the relative factor of d and s wave components.
