    Rough cut tool path planning for B-spline surfaces using convex hull boxes

    The objective of this paper is to present a non-uniform layered rough cut plan for B-spline surfaces using convex hull boxes. The tool path plan generated by this method will rapidly remove most redundant material from stock material without overcutting. First, a B-spline surface is decomposed into piecewise Bezier surfaces, of which the convex hull boxes form an approximate model for rough cutting. Then, according to the top planes of those convex hull boxes, the stock material is divided into layers of different thickness. The cavity contour for each layer is obtained using a simplified union Boolean operation on convex hull boxes. Finally, from the top down, each layer is processed like a 2D pocket die cavity. The algorithm is implemented on a personal computer. It is shown that the rough cut plan is very efficient since no computation for solving nonlinear equations is needed, and no overcutting occurs since B-spline surfaces are protected by the convex hull property of Bezier surfaces

    Solubilization of inorganic phosphates and plant growth promotion by Aspergillus niger

    Two of 187 fungal isolates (Aspergillus niger 1B and 6A) displaying superior phosphate (P) solubilization and hydrolytic enzyme secretion were studied using P forms of calcium (Ca-P), iron (Fe-P), and aluminum (Al-P). Phosphate solubilization in a sucrose-basal salt (SB) broth was increased and pH decreased by both isolates. In Ca-P medium, solubilization for 6A was approximately 322 mu g P mL(-1) and pH decreased by 4.2 units to 2.3 in 72 h. However, when pH value of the SB broth was lowered to 2.5 using HCl, 65.3 +/- 0.4 mu g mL(-1) of P was released from Ca-P, whereas trace amounts of P were released from Fe-P and Al-P. Both isolates displayed enhanced Al-P solubilization using NH4Cl rather than KNO3 as the N source; final pH values were not significantly different. With Ca-P, gluconic acid was predominantly produced by 1B and 6A, whereas oxalic acid predominated with Fe-P and Al-P. Addition of gluconic acid (final concentration of 8.5 mu mol mL(-1)) to Ca-P-supplemented SB lowered pH (2.9) and solubilized phosphate (146.0 +/- 1.0 mu g mL(-1)). Similarly, addition of oxalic acid (final concentration 6.6 mu mol mL(-1)) to Ca-P- and Fe-P-amended media solubilized P (60.2 +/- 0.9 and 21.6 +/- 2.1 mu g mL(-1), respectively), although these quantities were significantly lower than those detected in unamended SB. The presence of unidentified P solubilized compound(s) in the dialyzed (MW > 500) supernatant warrants further study. In pot experiments, significant increases in plant (Brassica chinensis Linn.) dry weight and N and P contents were observed with the addition of isolate 6A, when a small amount of organic fertilizer together with either rock phosphate (South African apatite) or Ca-P served as the main P sources

    Efficiency-Based Recruitment Plan for Chained Quick-Service Enterprise.

    [[abstract]]This paper describes a research method called two-stage design consisting of the determination of the efficiency for each quick-service restaurant of chained enterprise at the first stage by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and then proposes an approach of Recruitment and Allocation (RA) plan for supporting the everlasting running of the enterprise in the second stage. The technical efficiency, the scale efficiency, the production efficiency, and the return to scale are conducted in the first stage of this two-stage research design. In addition, this study also proposes the potentially improved value to promote the relative efficiency of each chained restaurant through the improvement of inputs or outputs items. Besides, the RA plan is proposed in the second stage of the two-stage design. The RA plan is an fficiency-based quantitative approach to recruit employees as well as to determine the allocation of those recruited employees.     Ligation of lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 on monocytes decreases very late antigen-4-mediated adhesion through a reactive oxygen species-dependent pathway

    Monocyte-endothelial adhesion plays an important role in monocyte trafficking and hence is important for immune responses and pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases including atherosclerosis. The cross-talk between different integrins on monocytes may be crucial for a coordinated regulation of the cellular adhesion during the complex process of transendothelial migration. By using monoclonal antibodies and recombinant intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) to engage lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1) on monocytic cells, we found that the cellular adhesion to vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) mediated by very late antigen 4 (VLA-4) was suppressed after this treatment and the suppression depended on the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Inhibition of production of RoSs through the use of inhibitor of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, but not inhibitors of mitochondrial electron transport chain or xanthine oxidase, revealed that this suppression on VLA-4-mediated cellular binding was mediated by Ross produced by phagocyte NADPH oxidase. Activation of phosphoinositol-3 kinase and Akt appears to mediate this NADPH oxidase activation through p47 phox phosphorylation and Rac-1 activation. Our results provide a novel pathway in which Ross play a critical role in integrin cross-talk in monocytes. This signaling pathway may be important for cellular transition from firm arrest to diapedesis during monocyte trafficking. (C) 2004 by The American Society of Hematology

    Experimental NMR Realization of A Generalized Quantum Search Algorithm

    A generalized quantum search algorithm, where phase inversions for the marked state and the prepared state are replaced by π/2\pi/2 phase rotations, is realized in a 2-qubit NMR heteronuclear system. The quantum algorithm searches a marked state with a smaller step compared to standard Grover algorithm. Phase matching requirement in quantum searching is demonstrated by comparing it with another generalized algorithm where the two phase rotations are π/2\pi/2 and 3π/23\pi/2 respectively.     Superconducting gap in the presence of bilayer splitting in underdoped Bi(Pb)2212

    The clearly resolved bilayer splitting in ARPES spectra of the underdoped Pb-Bi2212 compound rises the question of how the bonding and antibonding sheets of the Fermi surface are gapped in the superconducting state. Here we compare the superconducting gaps for both split components and show that within the experimental uncertainties they are identical. By tuning the relative intensity of the bonding and antibonding bands using different excitation conditions we determine the precise {\bf k}-dependence of the leading edge gap. Significant deviations from the simple cos(kxk_{x})-cos(kyk_{y}) gap function for the studied doping level are detected.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (revtex4

    Angle-resolved photoemission in doped charge-transfer Mott insulators

    A theory of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) in doped cuprates and other charge-transfer Mott insulators is developed taking into account the realistic (LDA+U) band structure, (bi)polaron formation due to the strong electron-phonon interaction, and a random field potential. In most of these materials the first band to be doped is the oxygen band inside the Mott-Hubbard gap. We derive the coherent part of the ARPES spectra with the oxygen hole spectral function calculated in the non-crossing (ladder) approximation and with the exact spectral function of a one-dimensional hole in a random potential. Some unusual features of ARPES including the polarisation dependence and spectral shape in YBa2Cu3O7 and YBa2Cu4O8 are described without any Fermi-surface, large or small. The theory is compatible with the doping dependence of kinetic and thermodynamic properties of cuprates as well as with the d-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.Comment: 8 pages (RevTeX), 10 figures, submitted to Phys.     Radial asymptotics of Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi dust models

    We examine the radial asymptotic behavior of spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi dust models by looking at their covariant scalars along radial rays, which are spacelike geodesics parametrized by proper length \ell, orthogonal to the 4-velocity and to the orbits of SO(3). By introducing quasi-local scalars defined as integral functions along the rays, we obtain a complete and covariant representation of the models, leading to an initial value parametrization in which all scalars can be given by scaling laws depending on two metric scale factors and two basic initial value functions. Considering regular "open" LTB models whose space slices allow for a diverging \ell, we provide the conditions on the radial coordinate so that its asymptotic limit corresponds to the limit as \ell\to\infty. The "asymptotic state" is then defined as this limit, together with asymptotic series expansion around it, evaluated for all metric functions, covariant scalars (local and quasi-local) and their fluctuations. By looking at different sets of initial conditions, we examine and classify the asymptotic states of parabolic, hyperbolic and open elliptic models admitting a symmetry center. We show that in the radial direction the models can be asymptotic to any one of the following spacetimes: FLRW dust cosmologies with zero or negative spatial curvature, sections of Minkowski flat space (including Milne's space), sections of the Schwarzschild--Kruskal manifold or self--similar dust solutions.Comment: 44 pages (including a long appendix), 3 figures, IOP LaTeX style.
